Impact of office-based intravenous deep sedation providers upon traditional sedation practices employed in pediatric dentistry.

PURPOSE: This survey intended to determine how the implementation of office-based IV deep sedation by a third party provider (OIVSED) impacted the traditional sedation practices employed in pediatric dentistry private practice settings. METHODS: A digital survey was e-mailed to 924 members of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry practicing in California, Florida, and New York, chosen because these states had large samples of practicing pediatric dentists in geographically disparate locations. RESULTS: 151 pediatric dentists using OIVSED responded to the survey. Improved efficiency, sa

Oral health management in pediatric patients with "special needs". Integrated hospital care model involving dentistry and pediatrics for the management of pediatric patients with hemato-oncologic diseases.

Dental care for pediatric patients with special needs represents a significant clinical and organizational challenge that requires an integrated, multidisciplinary, and personalized approach. This paper presents a structured model of collaboration between Dentistry and Pediatric Hematology-Oncology developed at the San Gerardo dei Tintori Hospital in Monza since 1999, aimed at providing comprehensive management for children affected by hematologic-oncologic diseases. The integration of these two disciplines led to the creation of a diagnostic-therapeutic-assistance pathway (hereinafter referre

Implementation of Virtual Reality in Preclinical Pediatric Dentistry Learning: A Comparison Between Simodont® and Conventional Methods.

Background/Objectives: Preclinical training in pediatric dentistry is traditionally performed on acrylic primary teeth or natural extracted teeth in phantoms or dental manikins. With technological advancements, virtual simulation has become increasingly common, enhancing the development of cognitive and motor skills in dental students while complementing traditional methods. Specific objectives included assessing whether preclinical theoretical knowledge impacts motor skill scores, comparing the quality of dental preparations on acrylic teeth versus those performed using virtual simulation (Si

AIM: This two-center retrospective observational study evaluated whether outpatient conscious sedation protocols based on titrated nitrous oxide/oxygen, midazolam, or their combination enabled complex dental and minor oral surgical procedures to be completed in uncooperative pediatric and special needs patients, without escalation to deep intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty pediatric and special needs patients treated at the Conscious Sedation Units of Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico (Milan, Italy) and Policlinico of Bari (Bari, I

Cytotoxicity, histopathological, microbiological and clinical aspects of an endodontic iodoform-based paste used in pediatric dentistry: a review.

This review aims at describing and comparing materials commonly used in root canal therapy, the cytotoxicity, histopathological, microbiological and clinical aspects ofa iodoform-based paste (Guedes-Pinto Paste-GPP) used in endodontic treatment of primary teeth. GPP has shown excellent biocompatibility to pulp fibroblasts and mild inflammatory reactions, having been well-tolerated by the periapical and connective tissues. Moreover, GPP bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects against many oral microorganisms were also demonstrated. Regarding clinical trials, the GPP technique has achieved succe

Intranasal and Oral Pharmacological Sedation in Pediatric Dentistry: A Thematic Scoping Review of Efficacy, Recovery, and Safety Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Conscious sedation (CS) is commonly recommended in pediatric dental clinics to manage uncooperative and anxious patients. Various routes of drug administration have been introduced to achieve effective CS. Among these, the intranasal (IN) route has gained popularity in dentistry due to its non-invasive nature. However, there is currently no comprehensive thematic review analyzing the efficacy and safety of drug regimens delivered via the intranasal route alone or in combination with other administration routes. Therefore, the aim of the present review is to thematically analyze t

From Preservation to Precision in Pediatric Dentistry: Evidence-Calibrated Viewpoint and Heuristic Framework for Silver Diamine Fluoride Guidance.

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a key preservation-based intervention in pediatric dentistry. It can arrest many cavitated lesions, reduce treatment burden, and expand access for children who cannot receive conventional restorative care. This viewpoint article offers a reasoned, heuristic framework for calibrating SDF guidance to the strength of the underlying evidence. It does not present a systematic review or formal policy standards. Foundational trials support the clinical usefulness of 38% SDF. The 2017 AAPD guidelines provided conditional recommendations based on low-quality evidence. T

Improving the Communication of Dental Findings in Pediatric Dentistry by Using Intraoral Scans as a Visual Aid: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

The aim of this first randomized clinical trial (RCT) was to determine whether intraoral scans (IOS) can be used as a visual aid to improve the communication of dental findings in pediatric dentistry. Therefore, 60 children (mean age 10.1 ± 3.3 years) and their accompanying parents/primary caregivers were examined between July 2022 and February 2023. Patients were randomly allocated to two groups: half of the participants were informed of the children's dental findings including treatment plans by verbal explanation alone (control group, n = 30), while the other half were informed using IOS (T

Benchmarking GPT-5, Gemini 2.5 Pro, Grok 4, and other LLMs on pediatric dentistry questions from a dental specialization exam.

Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs), is an increasingly prominent tool in medical and dental education. Trained with deep learning and NLP techniques, these models interpret meaning, generate text, and manage complex information. They hold potential for practical educational applications, such as supporting exam preparation and personalized learning. Moreover, their performance in clinical case recognition suggests an emerging potential for use in diagnostic decision-support systems. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of state-of-the-art large lang

The Impact of Minimal Intervention Dentistry on Patient-Reported and Observation-Based Outcomes in the Pediatric Population: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This review aimed to systematically investigate the effect of minimal intervention dentistry on patient-reported and observation-based outcomes of anxiety, pain and patient cooperation in the pediatric population. Microinvasive treatments (MITs) were compared to conventional treatments, home-based and professionally applied non-invasive treatments (NITs), and between MITs. Two reviewers independently screened studies from four electronic databases, extracted data, assessed the risk of bias and certainty of evidence with the GRADE approach. Ultimately, 26 studies were included for qualitative s
