BACKGROUND: Each year, schools across Scotland send their students on exchange programmes to Malawi. Between 2005 and 2009, 22.8% of Scotland's new cases of schistosomiasis were from freshwater exposure in Malawi, with 41.5% diagnosed in 15-24 year olds. In January 2011, a 17-year-old male presented to our urology department with visible haematuria following freshwater exposure during a school trip to Malawi. He was subsequently diagnosed with urinary schistosomiasis.
METHODS: The potential involvement of other individuals from the trip prompted further public health enquiry. The school, publ

BACKGROUND: Adolescent substance abuse is a growing public health concern associated with poor mental health, unsafe sexual behaviour, violence, school dropout, and psychosocial dysfunction. In rural South Africa, peer influence, cultural practices, poverty, and inadequate psychosocial support may increase learners' vulnerability to substance use. However, limited qualitative evidence exists on how these factors influence substance abuse among school learners in rural communities.
AIM: This study explored peer-group and cultural influences on substance abuse among school learners in a rural c

There is a recognized need for efforts that promote utilization and completion of trauma-focused evidence-based psychotherapies (EBPs) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Patients referred to PTSD specialty clinics are often reluctant to engage in EBPs, especially if they are treatment-naive or had prior negative treatment experiences. To address this reluctance, we implemented PTSD101, a psychoeducation group led by peer specialists offered in a specialty PTSD clinic for veterans considering new PTSD services. This present study aimed to conduct a program evaluation of PTSD101 using pre

Crisis Stabilization Centers (CSCs) offer a person-centered, community-based alternative to Emergency Departments for suicide prevention. CSCs may facilitate the expansion of the 988 Suicide Prevention Lifeline by providing callers with places to go in communities to receive treatment. However, new, recovery-focused psychological interventions for suicide prevention that can be rapidly implemented in CSCs are needed to be effective. This pilot study examines the feasibility, acceptability, and target engagement of the Toward Recovery, Hope, Interpersonal Connection, Values, and Engagement (i.e

Individuals with severe mental health challenges [SMHCs] often have unmet needs that are beyond the scope of traditional mental health services. These needs are typically met by community agencies, charities and peer support groups. Happy Chat [HC] is one such peer-support group whose goal is to address social isolation, and loneliness by creating a safe space to facilitate the development of informal friendships among individuals with SMHCs in the community. Nineteen participants were interviewed as part of a qualitative evaluation of HC. Data were subjected to thematic analysis. Four categor

BACKGROUND: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) contributes to maternal and neonatal complications and is a growing concern in Kenya. The 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is recommended to diagnose GDM between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, but uptake remains low in settings experiencing financial and structural barriers to health care access. The Stratification Risk of Diabetes in Early pregnancy (STRiDE) tool is a risk-prediction model designed to identify women at elevated risk for GDM. The STRiDE-GDM screening approach integrates this tool within community-based peer groups to guid

Hikikomori (prolonged social withdrawal) emerged as a social issue primarily affecting young people in Japan in the 1970s and began to be reported internationally around the year 2000. Its prevalence This study analysed the perspectives of people with a history of hikikomori participating in peer-support groups. Employing a qualitative research design grounded in Husserlian phenomenology, semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted between February and September 2025 with 13 participants in hikikomori peer support groups and the data were analysed using Colaizzi's method. Adolescence is a critical developmental stage in which emerging mental illnesses can lead to severe lifelong consequences. Effective prevention requires open, destigmatized dialogue with and among people in their social contexts. Prior research has largely examined these contexts in isolation, focusing either on family and peer contexts or on social media, without addressing how these contexts jointly shape adolescents' perceptions. This qualitative focus group study addresses (1) how adolescents describe the ways mental illness is perceived and responded to within their social contexts (inclu

BACKGROUND: Adolescents living with HIV struggle to accept their HIV status and remain adherent to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Support groups are one way to assist adolescents overcome these barriers. This evaluation, conducted in health facilities in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, explored the acceptability of peer-led support groups using a ten-topic curriculum and a 'storytelling' model in which fictional or real-life scenarios were used to make information more relatable and encourage discussion and sharing of personal experiences.
METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted to explore the acc

INTRODUCTION: Peer support can help navigate the isolation and psychological strain frequently experienced by youth living with chronic illness. Yet, data are lacking on the impact of providing support for youth living with mixed chronic conditions. We assessed the acceptability, feasibility and preliminary mental health impacts of a clinic-based peer support group for South African youth living with chronic illnesses, including HIV.
METHODS: This mixed-methods pilot study (September 2021-June 2022) enrolled 58 young patients, ages 13-24, at an urban hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. In-de

Objective: This study examines the relationship between family support and somatic symptoms and tests whether anxiety and depression serially mediate this relationship differently between peer counselors and general students within an integrated framework of Conservation of Resources Theory, Social Support Theory, and the Gain Spiral mechanism. Methods: A total of 2576 peer counselors and 5446 general students completed the University Personality Inventory (UPI), the Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS). Results: ① Peer counselors reported hi

BACKGROUND: Despite the established success of co-design in healthcare and disability settings, there is limited practical guidance for researchers regarding how to empower people with acquired brain injury (ABI) to lead programs. This study aimed to provide practical insights into maximally authentic co-design processes, emphasising the leadership roles of individuals with ABI in program initiation, planning, delivery and reporting. A second aim was to describe and qualitatively evaluate a process of employing and training people with ABI to facilitate co-designed workshops, reflecting the co

BACKGROUND: The transition to the community after incarceration presents challenges for returning citizens, including the immediate need to secure housing, employment, and income. Additionally, health care is essential for this population due to high rates of chronic physical health and mental health problems and substance use disorders. There is growing recognition of the need for interventions that support returning citizens as they navigate community reintegration while simultaneously tending to physical and behavioral health needs. We developed and pilot tested a peer support intervention

BACKGROUND: America's increasing HIV epidemic among youth suggests the need to identify novel strategies to leverage services and settings where youth at high risk (YAHR) for HIV can be engaged in prevention. Scalable, efficacious, and cost-effective strategies are needed, which support youth during developmental transitions when risks arise. Evidence-based behavioral interventions (EBIs) have typically relied on time-limited, scripted, and manualized protocols that were often delivered with low fidelity and lacked evidence for effectiveness.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine efficacy, im

BACKGROUND: Methods for developing a core outcome or information set require involvement of key stakeholders to prioritise many items and achieve agreement as to the core set. The Delphi technique requires participants to rate the importance of items in sequential questionnaires (or rounds) with feedback provided in each subsequent round such that participants are able to consider the views of others. This study examines the impact of receiving feedback from different stakeholder groups, on the subsequent rating of items and the level of agreement between stakeholders.

Latinx adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) have lower diabetes technology use and less optimal health outcomes compared to non-marginalized populations. In keeping with the tenants of social cognitive theory, adolescents with T1D who participate in virtual peer groups (VPGs) experience improved outcomes and technology use, but VPGs have not been developed or tested specifically in a Latinx cohort. Our previous focus groups with Latinx adolescents and caregivers revealed an urgent need for community-building, support, and culturally relevant information on multiple T1D topics, including diab

PURPOSE: Long-term social support is a key protective factor for living well with chronic disabilities. Community Aphasia Groups (CAGs) provide opportunities for connection and recovery. To address service availability challenges, we developed the Hub-and-Spoke, Peer-led CAG program in which a "Hub" of clinical staff supports "Spokes"-community members with and without aphasia-to facilitate high-quality CAGs. A pilot, mixed-methods study confirmed the feasibility and acceptability of this model.

BACKGROUND: Transitioning to residential centers often induces significant psychological stress in older adults, adversely affecting their psychological well-being (PWB) and ability to age healthily. Chinese art activities and their combination with peer group participation have demonstrated efficacy in improving emotional well-being and fostering social connectivity among younger populations but have not been examined in older adult populations to date.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the efficacy of Chinese art activities or their combination with peer group participation in enhancing
