The Power of the Shared Experience: MTN-020/ASPIRE Trial Participants' Descriptions of Peer Influence on Acceptability of and Adherence to the Dapivirine Vaginal Ring for HIV Prevention.

Women are disproportionately at risk of acquiring HIV in East and Southern Africa, despite global declines in incidence. Female-initiated HIV prevention methods, like the dapivirine vaginal ring, are needed to end the HIV epidemic. In-depth interviews and focus groups retrospectively explored peer influence on acceptability of and adherence to the ring during the ASPIRE trial, a phase III placebo-controlled trial. Results were analyzed using an inductive analytic approach. Study participants (peers) of all ages and adherence groups developed important interpersonal connections and reported bei

The role of various influence sources on sexual behavior in adolescents with type 1 diabetes in comparison to healthy peers: a cross-sectional study from Greece.

PURPOSE: Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) are at increased risk of sexually risky behaviors, such as unintended pregnancies. Adolescents with T1D use different sources of information on sexual education such as parents, friends, teachers, and the media. The study aim was to investigate the effect of different sources of information in development of sexual risk behaviors in T1D adolescents in comparison to healthy peers. METHODS: The study included 174 adolescents (58 adolescents with T1D and 116 healthy controls). Anonymous questionnaires were used to evaluate sexually risky beha

The influence of family instability on Mexican-origin adolescent delinquency through parental monitoring: Moderating roles of adolescent family obligation values and affiliation with deviant peers.

Unaddressed adolescent delinquency may contribute to negative adult outcomes, such as poor mental and physical health (Harris-McKoy & Cui, 2013; J. Kim et al., 2020). Although family instability has been identified as a risk factor for adolescent delinquency (Vargas et al., 2013), the hypothesized underlying mechanism of parental monitoring remains relatively underexplored. This is especially the case for Mexican-origin families where parental monitoring is embedded within the cultural values of the family (e.g., family obligation values) and with the larger social context of youth (e.g., affi

Exploring the Influence of a Community-Based Peer-Led Wheelchair Skills Training on Satisfaction with Participation in Children and Adolescents with Cerebral Palsy and Spina Bifida: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Peer-led approaches improve satisfaction with participation, wheelchair skills and wheelchair use self-efficacy in adults, but the evidence is limited in children. This pilot study aimed to explore the influence of community-based, peer-led, group wheelchair training program (i.e., Seating To Go) on satisfaction with participation (primary outcome), wheelchair skills, and wheelchair use self-efficacy in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy and spina bifida. METHODS: A single group pre-post design was used. Invitations were shared online and diffused by clinicians and advoc

Risk and protective factors for alcohol use among pregnant African-American, Hispanic, and white adolescents: the influence of peers, sexual partners, family members, and mentors.

Factors affecting the drinking patterns of 183 pregnant, African-American, Hispanic, and White adolescents were investigated, including the influence of peers, sexual partners, family members, and mentors. Among participants who drank alcohol prior to their pregnancies, 87% quit or cut back on their drinking behaviors. Those adolescents who lived in environments where their partners, peers, and relatives were drinking and using drugs were more likely to have consumed alcohol in the previous month, while adolescents who identified mentors and/or parents who provided high levels of support were

Exploring the factors influencing peer-recommended HIV testing in men who have sex with men (MSM): A qualitative study based on the theory of planned behavior.

OBJECTIVES: This study explored the factors influencing peer-recommended HIV testing in men who have sex with men (MSM), using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), to inform strategies that promote peer engagement in HIV testing. STUDY DESIGN: Qualitative study. METHODS: We recruited MSM participants through the Tongxing Community-based Organization (CBO) in Shijiazhuang City in September 2024. Semi-structured interviews were conducted using a TPB-based guide, and thematic analysis was performed. RESULTS: Twenty-four MSM were interviewed (median age = 34.5 years; Q1- Q3: 23-43.5). Most wer

Putting Out Fires: Understanding the Developmental Nature and Roles of Inmate Gangs in the Philippine Overcrowded Jails.

Utilizing intensive interview data from inmates in one of the most overcrowded and underresourced jails in Metro Manila, Philippines, this article explores the origins and roles of inmate pangkats (a derivative of gangs) in jail management. Responding to institutional deficiencies, such as police misconduct and court case delays, and structural shortages, such as lack of space, operational resources, and personnel, this article investigates how the pangkats supplement jail management and help keep the jail operations afloat. Specifically, this article documents how the pangkats put out fires:

Predictors of HIV-preventive sexual behavior in a high-risk adolescent population: the influence of perceived peer norms and sexual communication on incarcerated adolescents' consistent use of condoms.

Data were collected from 112 sexually active adolescents incarcerated in a juvenile detention facility to identify predictors of consistent use of condoms during sexual intercourse. Adolescents completed an anonymous epidemiologic survey instrument developed by the Centers for Disease Control. The self-report survey assessed demographic, psychosocial, and behavioral factors. Three factors were identified as associated with consistent condom use. These significant bivariate factors were entered into a multivariate logistic regression model to identify the independent contribution of each factor

Family Structure and Peer Influences as Correlates of Lifetime Smokeless Tobacco Use Among Undergraduate Students at The University For Development Studies, Ghana: An Analytical Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Smokeless tobacco (SLT) use is a growing public health concern among young adults in sub-Saharan Africa. Evidence on family-level factors associated with lifetime SLT use among university students in Ghana is lacking. This study estimated the lifetime prevalence of SLT use and identified associated factors, focusing on family structure, among undergraduates at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale, Ghana. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted (January-March 2023) among 600 undergraduate students at UDS (response rate 85.7%). Data were collected

Revisiting the Association Between "Gateway Hypothesis" of Early Drug Use and Drug Use Progression: A Cohort Analysis of Peer Influences on Drug Use Progression Among a Population Cohort.

Background and objective: Findings from observational studies indicate that early drug use is a strong predictor of further drug abuse. Because competing explanations abound in cross-sectional studies, causal interpretations from these investigations pose considerable challenge. We evaluated the relationship between early drug use and progression, while estimating modifying influences of adolescents' social contexts. Method: We applied a national longitudinal survey of 11,182 adolescents growing into adulthood over a 14-year period. The data provided a natural setting to evaluate the relations

Friends in Focus: Developing a Peer-to-Peer Intervention for Adolescents.

Against a background of a higher prevalence of adolescent substance use compared to use among adults, UNODC searched for a peer-to-peer intervention since peer influence is one of the most persuasive factors at the age range of 14-17 year old. Friends in Focus is an intervention of six two-hour sessions delivered by young trainers to peers aged 14-17, aiming for the latter to have enhanced interaction with their friends. The trainers are equipped with a standardized practical manual and a three-day interactive training. The article narrates the design process, grounded in prevention science an

Under pressure: The paradox of autonomy and social norms in drug education.

Much contemporary youth drug education operates from the assumption that young people's decisions to use alcohol and other drugs often stem from a misunderstanding that youth consumption is so common as to constitute a 'social norm'. Known as the 'social norms' approach, the stated aim of this form of drug education is to empower young people to avoid consumption by constituting it as uncommon and, therefore, abnormal. Taking the relationship between autonomy and norms as my primary concern, I examine key assumptions of the social norms approach through an analysis of a dataset of 23 'evidence

Effects of Friendship Influence and Normative Pressure on Adolescent Attitudes and Behaviors.

Peers are assumed to be crucial in shaping adolescents' attitudes and behaviors in schools; what peers yield social influence over adolescents is less clear. We disentangled two mechanisms of peer influence: friendship influence and normative pressure. Friendship influence refers to the impact of friends' attitudes and behaviors, while normative pressure stems from the influence of peers from the same social group, such as gender group. We adopted a network perspective, recognizing that peer influence can be shaped by changing relationships among peers. We investigated friendship influence and

Using Social Network Analysis to Understand Peer Relationships on Dietary Patterns in Early Adolescents: A Systematic Review.

CONTEXT: A paucity of studies explore peer influence and the role of social networks in shaping dietary patterns among early adolescents. Unhealthy dietary patterns, characterized by high intakes of added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium and low intakes of nutrient-dense foods, are prevalent among adolescents in the United States. These patterns contribute to increased weight gain that predispose adolescents to obesity and related comorbidities. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this systematic review is to understand the influence of peer social networks on early adolescent dietary patterns.

Applying Social Network Theory to Vaping in High School: Implications for Person-Centered Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Peer influence on risky behavior is particularly potent in adolescence and varies by gender. Smoking prevention programs focused on peer-group leaders have shown great promise, and a social influence model has proven effective in understanding adult smoking networks but has not been applied to adolescent vaping until 2023. This work aims to apply a social influence model to analyze vaping by gender in a high school network. METHODS: A high school's student body was emailed an online survey asking for gender, age, grade level, vape status, and the names of three friends. Custom Jav

Is suicidality contagious? The social transmission of suicidal thoughts and behaviors: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a major public health problem and exposure to suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) within the social network might increase individual risk. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantitatively examine associations between exposure to STBs in friends, peers, and acquaintances, and own STBs. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, PsycInfo, EMBASE, Scopus, CINAHL, and PubMed (inception-May 6, 2024, updated on November 5, 2025, and on February 22, 2026). We included observational studies reporting suicide-related outcomes for individuals exposed to STBs of friends

Pathways to honesty: Exploring the ecological desistance of atypical lying features.

Atypical lying (i.e., dishonesty that is excessive, impulsive, for fun, or lacks clear motive) may signal broader developmental risks. This study examined whether baseline levels and changes in parenting, peer, and individual factors were associated with trajectories of atypical lying from ages 14 to 26. Data from 1354 participants (86.41% male; baseline Mage = 16.04; 41.5% Black, 33.5% Hispanic, 20.2% White, 4.8% Other) in the Pathways to Desistance study were analyzed. Neural activation during anticipated peer evaluation and laboratory meal intake in overweight girls with and without loss of control eating.

The interpersonal model of loss of control (LOC) eating proposes that socially distressing situations lead to anxious states that trigger excessive food consumption. Self-reports support these links, but the neurobiological underpinnings of these relationships remain unclear. We therefore examined brain regions associated with anxiety in relation to LOC eating and energy intake in the laboratory. Twenty-two overweight and obese (BMIz: 1.9±0.4) adolescent (15.8±1.6y) girls with LOC eating (LOC+, n=10) and without LOC eating (LOC-, n=12) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) dur
