PURPOSE: Peer review is essential for quality assurance (QA) in radiation therapy, addressing the variability among clinicians in defining treatment target volumes. At our institution, weekly peer review meetings (PRMs) were initially conducted on Fridays, but the need for more robust review led to the implementation of PRMs on a daily basis. These daily sessions aim to enhance quality by routinely discussing each radiation therapy plan with a team of radiation oncologists.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: In this study, the impact of daily PRMs on radiation oncology planning was assessed by analyzing

Identifying risk factors for disease onset and progression has been a core focus in nephrology research. Mendelian Randomization (MR) has emerged as a powerful genetic epidemiological approach, utilizing genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to establish causal relationships between modifiable risk factors and kidney disease outcomes. MR uses genetic variants as instrumental variables to infer causal relationships between exposures and disease outcomes. This method leverages the natural randomization of genetic variants to balance confounders, akin to matched cohorts in observational research

BACKGROUND: The practice of involving people living with HIV in the development and provision of healthcare has gained increasing traction. Peer-support for people living with HIV is assistance and encouragement by an individual considered equal, in taking an active role in self-management of their chronic health condition. The objective of this systematic review was to assess the effects of peer-support for people living with HIV.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review in accordance with international guidelines. Following systematic searches of eight databases until May 2020, two reviewe

CONTEXT: It has been suggested that early announcements of research works to be published in peer-reviewed journals may diminish newsworthiness of scientific articles, but this issue has not been widely studied.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the impact on the news media, in terms of volume and prominence of coverage, of a scientific article published in peer-reviewed journals about issues with relevance to public health compared with the impact of preliminary release of information on the same issue.

The peer review system, fundamental to scientific quality control, faces a significant crisis. As journal editors, we often need to send up to 35 invitations just to secure two reviewers, confronting daily the collapse of voluntary participation. This reflects a critical imbalance: while publication pressure intensifies, willingness to evaluate diminishes, creating "literature elephantiasis", i.e., an overwhelming proliferation of papers exceeding human processing capacity. Current compensation models, relying on token recognition and database access, fail to incentivize quality engagement and

Peer-mediated interventions (PMIs) have been firmly established as evidence-based approaches for facilitating peer relationships among students with and without disabilities. We conducted a review of reviews evaluating PMI studies to support social skills and positive behavioral outcomes for children, adolescents, and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). A total of 4,254 individuals with IDD were participants across 43 reviews of the literature, reflecting 357 unique studies. This review includes coding related to participant demographic information, interventio

OBJECTIVE: The integration of neurotechnology and artificial intelligence (AI) in epilepsy research has led to significant advancements in diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment. However, the impact of these innovations is often diminished by inadequate and inaccurate reporting, limiting their reproducibility and implementation. This study aimed to identify common peer review concerns and develop reporting recommendations specific to neurotechnology and AI studies in epilepsy.
METHODS: We conducted a qualitative analysis of peer review comments from original research article submissions to Epil

AIMS: Peer review of contour volume is a priority in the radiotherapy treatment quality assurance process for head and neck cancer. It is essential that incorporation of peer review activity does not introduce additional delays. An on-demand peer review process was piloted to assess the feasibility and efficiency of this approach, as compared with a historic scheduled weekly approach.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between November 2016 and April 2017 four head and neck clinicians in one centre took part in an on-demand peer review process. Cases were of radical or adjuvant intent of any histology an

The transparency and documentation of the peer review process have been discussed recently. Our position is that transparency is best achieved when peer review is a collaborative process, in which both parties are open-minded but both also realize that the study pathologist retains complete control over the findings (raw data) and over the content of the pathology report. For these reasons, we believe that histopathology raw data should be defined as the observations made by the study pathologist (printed and/or electronic formats) rather than as the tissue slides recommended by the Organisati

Large and massive rotator cuff tears carry a concerningly high retear rate after primary repair, representing a persistent challenge in shoulder surgery. Patch augmentation-using allograft, autograft, xenograft, collagen, enthesis augments, or synthetic materials-has emerged as a promising strategy to improve both the mechanical and biologic properties of the repair construct. A growing body of evidence, including systematic reviews and meta-analyses, shows that patch augmentation reduces retear rates and improves clinical outcomes compared with repair alone. Despite this evidence, payor appro

BACKGROUND: Peer review-based funding evaluation systems are under increasing pressure. To help alleviate this, innovative approaches like Distributed Peer Review (DPR) - where applicants review proposals for the same funding call - are being explored. The Volkswagen Foundation trialled DPR alongside a conventional panel review process for an interdisciplinary call. Evaluation of this trial provides insights into the dynamics of (distributed) peer review.
METHODS: All proposals (N = 140) underwent both DPR and the panel review process. In DPR, applicants (N = 323) reviewed four or five propos

BACKGROUND: Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) in sub-Saharan Africa experience poorer outcomes across the HIV care cascade than other age groups because of intersecting developmental, psychosocial and structural barriers. Peer navigation has emerged as a promising strategy to support engagement in care, yet evidence on its effectiveness and implementation for ALHIV remains fragmented.
AIM: To synthesise evidence on peer navigation and peer-led psychosocial support interventions for adolescents living with HIV.
METHOD: A rapid review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 principles.

Services delivered by peer workers (people with lived/living experience) are recommended to find, test, and treat those at risk of hepatitis C (HCV). However, there is a lack of knowledge around the characteristics and underlying mechanisms of existing HCV peer interventions and how these drive effectiveness and impact. This systematic scoping review aimed to identify the activities of peer interventions, their reported outcomes, and mechanisms of change. We systematically searched five databases (Scopus, PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO and Web of Science) for peer-reviewed papers which described HCV

Longitudinal studies consistently demonstrate that repeated exposure to peer victimisation can have enduring consequences for children and adolescents' mental health. Documented outcomes include elevated risks of disorders such as depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and self-harm or suicidality, as well as broader psychosocial difficulties such as low self-esteem, loneliness, and internalising difficulties. However, prevalence estimates and effect sizes vary widely, reflecting differences in study design, measurement strategies, follow-up length, and the operationali

Serious workforce shortages in youth mental health widen the gap between demand and use, and exacerbate health disparities. A strategy to address this is training and integrating youth and young adult (Y/YA) peers to deliver services. This paper reviews international scientific studies on Y/YA services targeting mental health conditions or health promotion. We applied systematic criteria including controlled designs (RCTs or quasi-experimental), active intervention delivered by a young person, key search terms, and peer-reviewed publication between 2012 and 2023. The review yielded 32 studies

BACKGROUND: People with lived or living experiences of drug use and services have been increasingly incorporated into nonpeer-led mainstream organizational settings as a unique workforce. Despite the much discussed effectiveness of peer services in achieving measurable outcomes, limited attention has been given to the experiential aspects of peer work from the perspectives of peers, clients, or others involved. This systematic review synthesized qualitative evidence examining the experiences of peer work in nonpeer-led drug use service settings. It focused on the benefits of incorporating peer

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Addressing the burden of disease associated with substance use is a global priority, yet access to treatment is limited, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Peers, individuals with lived experience of substance use, may play an important role in expanding access to treatment, supporting outcomes, and reducing stigma. While peer-delivered services for substance use have been scaling up in high-income countries (HICs), less is known about their application in LMICs. This systematic review synthesizes the evidence of peer-delivered services for substance
