Simultaneous LC/MS analysis of hexachlorobenzene and pentachlorophenol by atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and photoionization (APPI) methods.

The simultaneous LC/MS analyses of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and pentachlorophenol (PCP), two dioxin precursors were studied by both atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and atmospheric pressure photoionization mass spectrometry (APPI/MS). The optimum LC/MS conditions of the simultaneous analysis were determined for these two compounds with different polarity. Ionization by APPI was found to be more effective than by APCI, and is thus a better ionization method for analysis of the two compounds. Using LC/APPI/MS we can achieve the simultaneous analysis of HCB and PCP at ppb levels.

NTP Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of Pentachlorophenol (CAS NO. 87-86-5) in F344/N Rats (Feed Studies).

Pentachlorophenol has been used as an herbicide, algicide, defoliant, wood preservative, germicide, fungicide, and molluscicide. Pentachlorophenol was nominated by the National Cancer Institute for carcinogenicity testing based on its widespread use as a wood preservative, potential for entering the environment (pentachlorophenol residues have been found worldwide in soil, water, and air samples; in food products; and in human and animal tissues and body fluids), and likelihood of bioaccumulation in the environment (pentachlorophenol is persistent in soil, having a half-life of up to 5 years).

Exposures to the environmental contaminants pentachlorophenol and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane increase production of the proinflammatory cytokine, interleukin-1β, in human immune cells.

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) are organochlorine environmental contaminants found in human blood at very significant levels (as high as 5 μm for PCP and 260 nm for DDT). Cancers of the blood (lymphoma and myeloma) and kidney as well as others have been associated with exposure to these contaminants. Interleukin (IL)-1β is a proinflammatory cytokine and is involved in stimulating cell proliferation. High levels of IL-1β are associated with inflammatory diseases and tumor progression. Previous studies showed that PCP and DDT at certain concentrations were able

Effects of pentachlorophenol on rat liver changes induced by hexachlorobenzene, with special reference to porphyria, and alterations in mixed function oxygenases.

Hexachlorobenzene (HCB, 1000 ppm) and 500 ppm pentachlorophenol (PCP) were fed separately or in combination to female Wistar rats. A control group was provided with standard food without HCB or PCP. Subgroups of 4 rats were killed after 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks. No significant difference was found between the amounts of HCB accumulated in the livers of the HCB and HCB + PCP fed rats. Administering HCB together with PCP caused a noticeable accumulation of PCP in the liver, compared to the results after administering HCB and PCP separately. In the HCB and HCB + PCP fed groups liver weight increase

Potential impact of the 2023 Lahaina wildfire on the marine environment: Modeling the transport of ash-laden benzo[a]pyrene and pentachlorophenol.

The Lahaina urban/wildland fire event is considered the deadliest wildfire in the past century of U.S. history. This fire resulted in over 2200 building structures destroyed or damaged, approximately 4000 automobiles were incinerated and between 450 and 878 ha of grassland burned in areas adjoining the town of Lahaina, Maui County, State of Hawaii, U.S.A. One of the most abundant contaminants of both wildland and urban fires is the incomplete combustion product, benzo[a]pyrene. Pentachlorophenol from burned and unburned utility poles/residential burn sites enter into navigable waters, thus pos

Pentachlorophenol causes energy deficiency and liver injury in marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) through damaging mitochondria and inducing oxidative stress.

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is widely distributed in marine environments and poses a threat to the health of marine organisms. Recent studies have demonstrated that PCP induces energy deficiency in marine organisms. However, the underlying toxification mechanism and the resulting adverse outcomes remain unclear. This study analyzed the energy metabolism of marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) exposed to PCP at environmentally relevant concentrations via proteomic analysis and multiple physiological assessments. The results showed that PCP disrupted mitochondrial morphology, reduced mitochondrial mem

Plant extract-based green fabrication of nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) nanoparticles: An operative platform for non-enzymatic determination of pentachlorophenol.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Environmental pollution has become a major human concern with the extensive exploitation of pesticides. Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is the most hazardous of all chlorophenols which are being used as pesticide, fungicide, and wood preservative. Thus, the fabrication of ultrasensitive electrochemical methods for the determination of pesticides is of great significance. In the present experiment, a simple, green, and sensitive electrochemical sensor was constructed for the determination of PCP by using a chemically modified nickel ferrite glassy carbon electrode (NiFe2O4/GCE). The fabricated nanopart

Dynamic control of pentachlorophenol photodegradation process using P25/PDA/BiOBr through regulation of photo-induced active substances and chemiluminescence.

Photodegradation is a new approach for the removal of pentachlorophenol (PCP). Photooxidation degradation (using hydroxyl radicals) exhibits better performance to remove PCP than photoreduction degradation, but the former will lead to an increase in the production of toxic by-products such as tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (TCBQ). Thus, a new strategy is required to enhance PCP photodegradation and simultaneously inhibit toxic intermediates production. Herein, TiO2 (P25)/polydopamine (PDA)/BiOBr was synthesized and used to photodegrade PCP. Based on the relative position of the CB and VB of P25

Temporal trends and sources of PCDD/Fs, pentachlorophenol and chlornitrofen in paddy field soils along the Yoneshiro River basin, Japan.

In order to understand the long-term behaviors of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), pentachlorophenol (PCP), and 2,4,6-trichlorophenyl-4'-nitrophenyl ether (chlornitrofen, CNP) in paddy soil, we measured their concentrations in paddy soil samples collected in 1982 and 1984 (1980s) and in 2000 and 2002 (2000s) from the Yoneshiro River basin, Japan. The concentrations of PCP and CNP decreased from the 1980s to the 2000s, whereas the concentrations of PCDD/Fs and their toxic equivalency (WHO2006-TEQ) remained. The major sources of PCDD/Fs in the pad

Photoelectrochemical detection of pentachlorophenol with a multiple hybrid CdSe(x)Te(1-x)/TiO2 nanotube structure-based label-free immunosensor.

Driven by the urgent demand of detecting trace amounts of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in contaminative water, a label-free immunosensor with ultra sensitivity and high selectivity was constructed based on a hybrid CdSe(x)Te(1-x) (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) nanocrystal (NCs)-modified TiO(2) nanotube (NT) arrays for the first time. The CdSe(x)Te(1-x) NCs were photoelectrodeposited on inner and outer space of the TiO(2) NTs, leading to high photoelectrical conversion efficiency in the visible region. PCP antibodies are covalently conjugated on the TiO(2) NTs due to the large surface area and good biocompatibility. S

The association of cancer risks with pentachlorophenol exposure: Focusing on community population in the areas along certain section of Yangtze River in China.

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) was used in large quantities, and mainly for killing the intermediate host snails of schistosome in China, thereby resulting in ubiquitous PCP residue in the environment. However, studies considering the carcinogenicity of PCP for humans mainly focused on occupational workers, and the actual carcinogenicity of PCP for general population is uncertain. To investigate the association between cancer risks and PCP exposure in a community population, an ecological study was conducted in three contaminated areas along the Yangtze River. Standardized rate ratio (SRR) was calcul

Genotoxic effects of pentachlorophenol, lindane, transfluthrin, cyfluthrin, and natural pyrethrum on human mucosal cells of the inferior and middle nasal conchae.

BACKGROUND: Animal experiments and epidemiological studies suggest that pentachlorophenol (PCP) and gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (lindane) should be classified as possible human carcinogens. In the past, both have had a variety of applications in the civilian and military sectors and in forestry. They have, e.g., been used to impregnate and treat uniforms and other fabrics and to control human lice. Animal experiments indicate that PCP in particular causes mutations and chromosome aberrations and thus DNA damage. Studies on whether or not this also applies to newer substances and especially to

Metabolic activation of pentachlorophenol: TCBQ as a potent inhibitor of gonadal steroidogenesis via 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase NAD+ binding-site thiolalkylation.

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a pesticide and persistent endocrine disruptor. This study examined how PCP and its metabolite tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (TCBQ) inhibit human (h3β-HSD2) and rat (r3β-HSD1) gonadal steroidogenic enzymes. In vitro assays using human KGN cells and rat testicular microsomes showed PCP moderately inhibited h3β-HSD2 (IC₅₀: 22.55 μM, mixed inhibitor), while TCBQ was more potent (IC₅₀: 6.42 μM). PCP (25-50 μM) significantly reduced progesterone in KGN cells, whereas TCBQ suppressed it at ≥ 1 μM. In rats, PCP weakly inhibited r3β-HSD1 (IC₅₀: 32.03 μM), but TCBQ was far str

Enhanced Exciton Effect and Singlet Oxygen Generation Triggered by Tunable Oxygen Vacancies on Bi2MoO6 for Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Sodium Pentachlorophenol.

Construction of the tunable oxygen vacancies (OVs) is widely utilized to accelerate molecular oxygen activation for boosting photocatalytic performance. Herein, the in-situ introduction of OVs on Bi2MoO6 was accomplished using a calcination treatment in an H2/Ar atmosphere. The introduced OVs can not only facilitate carrier separation, but also strengthen the exciton effect, which accelerates singlet oxygen generation through the energy transfer process. Superior carrier separation and abundant singlet oxygen played a crucial role in favoring photocatalytic NaPCP degradation. The optimal BMO-0

Assessment of the rhizosphere competency and pentachlorophenol-metabolizing activity of a pesticide-degrading strain of Trichoderma harzianum introduced into the root zone of corn seedlings.

To develop a dependable approach to introduce laboratory selected, pesticide-degrading microorganisms into soil environments for the purpose of in situ bioremediation, we tested the possibility of utilizing plant rhizospheres as the vehicle. We first established the rhizosphere competency of a strain of the soil fungus Trichoderma harzianum, a biocontrol species well studied by plant pathologists to colonize plant rhizosphere in many parts of the world. The strain we chose, T.h.2023 is resistant to many fungicides, and it has been shown to metabolize several pesticides. Second, we found that i

Hexachlorobenzene and its metabolites pentachlorophenol and tetrachlorohydroquinone: interaction with thyroxine binding sites of rat thyroid hormone carriers ex vivo and in vitro.

Previous results have indicated that hexachlorobenzene (HCB)-induced hypothyroidism may be caused by its main metabolite pentachlorophenol (PCP), and by tetrachlorohydroquinone (TCHQ), rather than by the parent compound. In the present experiments it was investigated whether hormone displacement from serum carriers could be a factor in the development of this hypothyroidism. In an in vitro competition assay PCP was an effective competitor for the thyroxine (T4)-binding sites of serum carriers, whereas HCB was ineffective. Ex vivo experimental results demonstrated occupation of T4-binding sites

Developmental exposure to pentachlorophenol affects the expression of thyroid hormone receptor beta1 and synapsin I in brain, resulting in thyroid function vulnerability in rats.

Pentachlorophenol (PCP), a component of biocides and a contaminant in diverse tissue samples from humans from various geographic areas, disrupts regulatory effects of thyroid hormones. Here we examined the effects of developmental exposure of rats to PCP on various aspects of brain development, male reproductive function, and adrenal function, all of which are under thyroid hormones regulation. PCP was administered to dams and their offspring via drinking water (6.6 mg l(-1)) during gestation and lactation. Tissue samples were obtained from dams, 3-week-old weanling pups, and 12-week-old pups.
