99mTc-DTPA was successfully used to detect simultaneously gastrointestinal bleeding sites in experimentally created mucosal ulcers in the colon and stomach of rabbits. Unlike the other radiopharmaceuticals that are currently used, 99mTc-DTPA was rapidly cleared from the vascular, hepatic and splenic circulation. The overall background radioactivity was low. 99mTc-DTPA appears to be an ideal agent for detection and localisation of gastrointestinal bleeding sites.

The technique of gamma scintigraphy has been used to follow the transit of a solution and a pellet formulation in the gastrointestinal tract of healthy volunteers. The emptying of the formulations from the stomach and their arrival at the caecum could be quantified, thereby allowing calculation of transit times for the small intestine. Gastric emptying was affected by the nature of the formulation, i.e. liquid or solid. However, transit through the small intestine was independent of the nature of the administered material.

Gastric emptying curves were studied on normal stomach using liquid food labeled 99mTc-DTPA, in supine position. Three patterns of gastric emptying curves were observed for whole stomach, fundic-body and antral area. The effect of metal chelators (EDTA, DTPA and Desferal) on the metal-catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide was studied using EPR spin-trapping spectroscopy. The formation of hydroxyl radicals (OH*) in both chemical (Fenton reaction) and biological (thylakoids) systems was stimulated by EDTA. DTPA promoted the generation of OH* in the presence of strong reducing agents, whereas in their absence it acted as an antioxidant. Cortical and whole kidney radionuclide transit parameters were studied in 16 patients who underwent a pyeloplasty for unilateral pelviureteral junction (PUJ) obstruction. Oligohydramnios can be associated with fetal renal abnormalities. A pregnancy marked by oligohydramnios produced a male child with the facial features of Potter's syndrome.
