Marked decrease in serum pepsinogen II levels resulting from endoscopic resection of a large duodenal tumor.

Studies have indicated that serum pepsinogen (PG) levels are not only markers for chronic atrophic gastritis but also predictive risk factors for gastric cancer. However, serum PG levels can change because of pathological conditions other than gastritis. We report the first case in which abnormally high serum PG II levels (168.8 ng/mL) led to the discovery of a large tumor covering a wide area in the duodenum, and after resection of the tumor, the serum PG II levels markedly decreased. Because endoscopic and histopathological examinations showed no indications of atrophic changes, inflammation

Diagnostic performance of serum pepsinogen assay for the prediction of atrophic gastritis and gastric neoplasms: Protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Serum pepsinogen assay (sPGA) combining concentration of pepsinogen I (PG I), and the ratio of PG I/II is the noninvasive biomarker for predicting chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) and neoplasms reflecting mucosal secretory status. Although various cut-off values have been suggested, PG I ≤70 ng/mL and PG I/II ≤3 have been widely accepted. However, previous studies for diagnostic test accuracy presented only pooled outcomes, which cannot discriminate the diagnostic validity of sPGA with cut-off of PG I ≤70 ng/mL and PG I/II ≤3. METHODS: We will search the core databases [MEDLINE (t

Inverse association between a pro-inflammatory genetic profile and Helicobacter pylori seropositivity among patients with chronic atrophic gastritis: enhanced elimination of the infection during disease progression?

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection is a key risk factor for chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG), an established precursor of gastric cancer. There is increasing evidence of frequent clearance of the infection during progression of CAG. We aimed to assess the association between host inflammatory polymorphisms and H. pylori seropositivity among CAG patients from Germany. METHODS: In the baseline examination of ESTHER, a population-based study conducted in Saarland, serum pepsinogens I and II and H. pylori serostatus were measured by ELISA, and selected genetic polymorphisms (IL1A C-889T, I

Helicobacter pylori, clinical, laboratory, and noninvasive biomarkers suggestive of gastric damage in healthy school-aged children: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori is acquired largely in early childhood, but its association with symptoms and indirect biomarkers of gastric damage in apparently healthy children remains controversial. We aimed to relate persistent H. pylori infection in apparently healthy school-aged children with clinical, laboratory, and noninvasive biomarkers suggestive of gastric damage using a case-control design. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We followed up 83 children aged 4-5 years with persistent H. pylori infection determined by stool antigen detection and/or a urea breath test and 80 noninfected matched

Impact of Helicobacter pylori Immunoglobulin G Levels and Atrophic Gastritis Status on Risk of Metabolic Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection is implicated in gastric and extra-gastric diseases. While gastritis-related chronic inflammation represents a known trigger of metabolic disturbances, whether metabolic syndrome (MetS) is affected by gastritis status remains unclear. We aimed to clarify the effect of HP-related gastritis on the risk of MetS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled patients undergoing screening for MetS between 2014 and 2015. Investigations included HP-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody assays to detect HP infection, and serum pepsinogen assays t

Synergism between cellular messengers and agonist combinations in pepsinogen secretion.

The esophagus of Rana catesbeiana yielded 20-40 X 10(6) peptic cells that were greater than 80% pure by immunostaining, greater than 90% viable, and had low basal pepsinogen and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) release. Cellular responses to agents that bypass receptors and act directly on cell messenger systems have been compared with receptor-mediated activation. Pepsinogen secretion was stimulated dose dependently by A23187, the phorbol ester 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA), and forskolin. The combination of any two or all three agents at optimum effective concentrations stimulated sec
