Serum pepsinogen A (PGA) and total pepsin activity (PA) in gastric juice were investigated in 87 duodenal ulcer patients. The analysis of data shows a significant increase of PGA and PA in comparison with controls. Frog esophageal mucosa contains peptide glands which release pepsinogen in response to a variety of secretagogues and serves as a model to examine the inhibitory action of somatostatin. The pepsinogen secretion in response to bethanechol was inhibited by somatostatin in a noncompetitive fashion. The maximal response induced by bethanechol was reduced and the EC50 for bethanechol was increased in the presence of somatostatin. On the other hand, somatostatin showed essentially no effect on pepsinogen release evoked by ionophore A23187, dibutyryl cAMP or by forskolin in the presence of atropine.

Group I pepsinogens were measured by radioimmunoassay in the sera of 93 patients with rheumatic diseases and 99 controls. BACKGROUND AND AIM: Few studies have evaluated the change in serum pepsinogen (sPG) levels after the eradication of Helicobacter pylori. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of H. pylori eradication on sPG levels in patients with gastric cancer/dysplasia in comparison to a control group.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 368 patients with gastric cancer/dysplasia and 610 control subjects. H. pylori status and sPG levels were measured before and after eradication. The follow-up time points were classified as < 12, 12-23, 24-35, and ≥ 36 months.

AIM: To study the role of an insertion/deletion polymorphism in the pepsinogen C (PGC) gene, an effective marker for terminal differentiation of the stomach mucosa, in the susceptibility to the development of gastric lesions.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role played by GABAB receptors in the regulation of gastric basal pepsinogen secretion in anaesthetized rats.
