Anaerobic bacteria isolated from foot infections in diabetic patients: in vitro susceptibility to nine antibiotics.

Twenty-nine isolates of anaerobic bacteria from foot infections in diabetic patients were tested, using the agar dilution method, for in vitro susceptibility to nine antimicrobial agents. Imipenem and metronidazole showed excellent activity; clindamycin and chloramphenicol were next in terms of efficacy. Cefoxitin and moxalactam demonstrated good activity, although three isolates of the Bacteroides fragilis group were resistant to moxalactam. Penicillin G, cefotaxime, and cefoperazone showed poor activity against the B fragilis group but were quite active against other anaerobes. Among the new

Bacterial arthritis in the adult.

A brief review of bacterial arthritis as seen at the Mayo Clinic in the years 1958 through 1973 has been presented with a selected literature review. Once considered a disease of children and adolescents, this disease now is seen more often in adults, especially in those who are elderly, are chronically ill, or are receiving medications that lower the host resistance in invading bacteria. The diagnosis must be made early, with rapid isolation and identification of the organism. Proper antibacterial drugs should be selected on the basis of in vitro susceptibility tests. The joint should be eith

Causal associations between gut microbiota and Cholestatic liver diseases: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: The etiological factors of Cholestatic Liver Diseases especially primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) are not fully illustrated. It has been reported in previous observational studies that gut microbiota are associated with cholestatic liver diseases. However, there is uncertainty regarding the causality of this association. By using Mendelian randomization, this study aimed to examine the causal impact of gut microbiota on cholestatic liver diseases. METHODS: From large-scale genome-wide association studies, genetic instruments for each gut m

Understanding antimicrobial susceptibility profile of Finegoldia magna: an insight to an untrodden path.

BACKGROUND: Finegoldia magna (formerly known as Peptococcus magnus or Peptostreptococcus magnus) belonging to phylum Firmicutes, class Clostridia and genus Finegoldia, is the only species known to cause infections in human beings. Amongst Gram positive anaerobic cocci, F. magna is known to be the most virulent with a high pathogenic potential. Significant upsurge in antimicrobial resistance among anaerobes has been documented by various studies. F. magna is known to be susceptible to most of the anti-anaerobic antimicrobials, however, multidrug resistant strains are being reported in literatur

A review. Lessons from an animal model of intra-abdominal sepsis.

Intra-abdominal sepsis that involves multiple aerobic and anaerobic bacteria derived from the colonic flora was studied in Wistar rats to determine the relative roles of various microbial species. The rats challenged with pooled colonic contents showed a biphasic disease. Initially, there was acute peritonitis, Escherichia coli bacteremia, and high mortality. In rats that survived this acute peritonitis stage, intra-abdominal abscesses developed, and anaerobic bacteria were the preponderant organisms. Subsequent experiments showed that antibiotics directed against coliforms prevented mortality

Fecal microbiota transplantation from Hezuo pigs alleviates intestinal inflammatory injury in Clostridium perfringens type C-infected piglets via modulation gut microbiota and intestinal barrier.

Clostridium perfringens type C (CpC)-induced piglet diarrhea is a major challenge in the swine industry. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from Hezuo pigs against intestinal injury in Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire (DLY) suckling piglets infected with CpC. Piglets were divided into two groups, including CpC-challenged control group and FMT-treatment group, which received fecal suspension from Hezuo pigs prior to infection. Morphological, immunological, microbiomic, and metabolomic analyses were conducted after post-infection. The results

Seabuckthorn polysaccharides mitigate hepatic steatosis by modulating the Nrf-2/HO-1 pathway and gut microbiota.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming a significant global public health threat. Seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The hypolipidemic effects of Seabuckthorn polysaccharides (SP) against high-fat diets (HFD)-induced NAFLD were systematically explored and compared with that of Bifidobacterium lactis V9 (B. Lactis V9). Results showed that HFD-induced alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels decreased by 2.8-fold and 4.5-fold, respectively, after SP supplementation. Moreover, the alleviating eff

Alteration of the gut microbiota's composition and metabolic output correlates with COVID-19-like severity in obese NASH hamsters.

Obese patientss with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are particularly prone to developing severe forms of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19). The gut-to-lung axis is critical during viral infections of the respiratory tract, and a change in the gut microbiota's composition might have a critical role in disease severity. Here, we investigated the consequences of infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on the gut microbiota in the context of obesity and NASH. To this end, we set up a nutritional model of obesity with dyslipidemia and NASH in the golden hams

[Clinical and bacteriological substantiation of the use of cefoperazone/sulbactam in complex therapy of patients with pyo-destructive forms of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI)].

Antibacterial therapy is the most important component of the complex management of pyo-destructive forms of LRTI. Since the microbial flora is rather variable and polymorphous, antibiotics used in the treatment of LRTI should be active against both aerobic (especially gramnegative) and anaerobic pathogens. The aim of the study was to prove, on the basis of the bacteriological and clinical findings, the validity of the use of cefoperazone/sulbactam (CS), the only inhibitor-protected cephalosporin, for the monotherapy of patients with LRTI. The trial enrolled 32 patients (29 males and 3 females)

Association between gut microbiota and adrenal disease: a two-sample Mendelian randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Some observational studies and clinical experiments suggest a close association between gut microbiota and metabolic diseases. However, the causal effects of gut microbiota on adrenal diseases, including Adrenocortical insufficiency, Cushing syndrome, and Hyperaldosteronism, remain unclear. METHODS: This study conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis using summary statistics data of gut microbiota from a large-scale genome-wide association study conducted by the MiBioGen Consortium. Summary statistics data for the three adrenal diseases were obtained from the FinnGe
