Budgerigar breeders' hypersensitivity pneumonitis presenting as chronic bronchitis with purulent sputum.

A 49-year-old woman complained of cough and a purulent sputum (about 40 ml/day). She kept budgerigars for a period of 30 years, she first noticed a productive cough 10 years previously. Her chest roentgenogram revealed a diffuse reticulonodular pattern. She was diagnosed as having a chronic type of budgerigar breeder's lung associated with chronic bronchitis. Peptostreptococcus anaerobius was cultured from her sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, as well as from droppings of her budgerigar. This is the second case of hypersensitivity pneumonitis presenting as chronic bronchitis with much sput

A bacteriological and/or immunological study of anaerobic streptococcal infection in chronic tonsillitis, paratonsillitis and periodontitis patients.

Anaerobic streptococci were isolated from 100% of tonsil tissue samples obtained from 36 chronic tonsillitis patients. The strains displayed antigenic and other differences. Sera of chronic tonsillitis, paratonsillitis and periodontitis patients exhibited significantly more often, and in significantly higher titres, antibodies to the anaerobic streptococci isolated from tonsils than did sera of normal persons.

Odontogenic orbital abscess with intracranial and pulmonary involvement.

A 58-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with left ptosis and complete ophthalmoplegia. Imaging demonstrated a left orbital abscess. Her past medical history included cavitatory lung disease and "aseptic" meningitis 2 months previously. An anaerobic organism and commensal of the oral flora, Peptostreptococcus sp., was cultured from the orbital abscess. The patient was found to have a carious upper molar with chronic buccal abscess, which was extracted. This case presents an uncommon pathogen arising from an odontogenic infection as the etiology for orbital abscess, cavitatory

The clinical importance of gram-positive anaerobic cocci isolated at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, in 1987.

The clinical importance of the gram-positive anaerobic cocci (GPAC) isolated in 1987 at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, is assessed. Of about 800 anaerobic isolates, 209 (27%) were GPAC, of which 67 (32%) were from abscesses and 22 (11%) were in pure growth. Four species comprised 77% of the 168 isolates available for study: Peptostreptococcus magnus (55 isolates, 33%), P. micros (23, 14%), P. asaccharolyticus (24, 14%) P. asaccharolyticus (24, 14%) and P. anaerobius (27, 16%). Different species were associated with different sites, from P. magnus (usually skin-associated sites; normally cu

Microbiological and toxicity analyses of the synthetic polymer polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride against endodontic microorganisms.

Failures in endodontic treatments are common due to microbial resistance in the pulp canal. The study evaluated the in vitro activity of polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHMGH) against endodontic strains, as well as in vivo toxicity. Using minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration techniques, PHMGH was effective against all microorganisms, even at low concentrations. At 50.0 µg/mL, it inhibited Enterococcus faecalis; furthermore, when compared to chlorhexidine (CLX), it demonstrated values 19 times lower against Candida albicans. The polymer's activity w

Integrative metabolomics and microbiomics analysis reveals distinctive microbiota-metabolites interactions in gastric carcinogenesis.

Gastric microbiota and metabolites may interact and play collaborative roles in the carcinogenesis process. This study aims to investigate differential metabolites and microbes, as well as the possible roles of microbe-metabolite interactions in gastric cancer (GC) development. Targeted metabolomics assays and 16S rRNA sequencing were performed to compare metabolic and microbial profiles in gastric tissues from subjects with superficial gastritis/chronic atrophic gastritis (SG/CAG), intestinal metaplasia/low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (IM/LGIN) and GC. Significant differences were found i

Vaginal microbiota as an unusual cause of spondylodiscitis.

The incidence of extra pelvic infections due to vaginal microflora bacteria has increased as growth media and methods of isolation have improved. However, bone infections seem to be still relatively rare, and little is known about their risk factors, clinical presentation, treatment and final outcome. We describe here a spondylodiscitis due to Gardnerella vaginalis, Atopobium vaginae, Peptostreptococcus indolicus and Prevotella amnii, anaerobic bacteria from vaginal microbiota. Our patient had no obvious predisposing factor and recovered after antibiotic treatment. To our knowledge, this case

Appendicitis: When there is more than meets the eye.

Acute appendicitis is the most frequent emergency in gastrointestinal surgery. Obstruction of the appendiceal lumen appears to be one of the most common physiologic mechanisms for the development of acute appendicitis. Once obstructed, the dilatation of the lumen causes ischemia and necrosis of the wall. The most common organisms involved in appendicitis are Escherichia coli, Peptostreptococcus, Bacillus fragilis and Pseudomonas. Rarely, Actinomyces is involved in this process. In this case report, we report a case of actinomycosis of the appendix vermiformis occurring in a 19-year-old male wi

[Brain abscess secondary to pulmonary arteriovenous malformation, case report (author's transl)].

A case of brain abscess in the right parietal lobe secondary to pulmonary arteriovenous malformation of the right lung is presented. A 27-year-old man was admitted for headache and left homonymous hemianopsia. CAG, VAG and brain scan detected brain abscess of the right parietal lobe which was successfully removed surgically. He had been noted to have generalized cyanosis and club finger which corresponded to polycytemia and hypercapnia on examination. Subsequently pulmonary arteriovenous malformation was found in the right lower lobe of the lung which was also successfully excised by thoracic

Intracranial complications of sinusitis in children. A sequela of periapical abscess.

The cases of two children with periapical abscess in the upper incisors, sinusitis, and intracranial abscess are described. The ethmoid and maxillary sinuses were involved in both patients. Subdural empyema occurred in both, and one of the children had also cerebritis and brain abscess. Anaerobic bacteria were isolated from the infected subdural empyemas. Peptostreptococcus intermedius and microaerophilic streptococci were recovered in one patient and Fusobacterium sp in the other. Surgical drainage and appropriate antimicrobial therapy resulted in complete eradication of the infection in both

Bloodstream infections due to Peptoniphilus spp.: report of 15 cases.

Peptoniphilus spp. are Gram-positive anaerobic cocci (GPAC) that were formerly classified in the genus Peptostreptococcus. This study describes 15 cases of Peptoniphilus spp. bloodstream infection (BSI) diagnosed from 2007 to 2011 using 16S rDNA sequencing in patients with pneumonia, pre-term delivery, soft tissue infection or colon or bladder disease. Seven out of 15 (47%) of these cases had polymicrobial BSIs. One of the isolates was closely related to P. duerdenii (EU526290), while the other 14 isolates were most closely related to a Peptoniphilus sp. reference strain (ATCC 29743) and P. ha

Death of an African elephant from probable toxemia attributed to chronic pulpitis.

A 31-year-old captive male African elephant (Loxodonta africana) of 5,000-kg body weight died suddenly in ventral recumbency. Lesions seen at necropsy were bilateral purulent pulpitis and periodontitis of both tusks, serous atrophy of coronary groove fat, Grammocephalus cholangitis, myocardial and skeletal lipofuscinosis, and scattered segmental necrosis in the pectoral muscles. Nonhemolytic streptococci, Corynebacterium sp, Peptostreptococcus anaerobius, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and Bacteroides sp, were recovered from the exudate around one or both tusks. We postulated that the elephant died

Pediatric infectious cervical lymphadenitis.

Infectious cervical lymphadenitis is a frequently encountered problem in the pediatric population. The recent experience with infectious cervical lymphadenitis at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was reviewed. The most common etiologic agent was Staphylococcus aureus. beta-Hemolytic streptococcus and mycobacterium were found in 15% and 6% of cases respectively. Other agents included pneumococcus, cat scratch, Toxoplasma gondii, actinomycosis, and mixed bacteroides and peptostreptococcus. Most patients responded to high-dose intravenous antistaphylococcal penicillin. Needle aspiration pr

Perforated jejunal diverticulum with multiple hepatic abscesses.

We have described a patient with multiple hepatic abscesses caused by a perforated jejunal diverticulum with a presumed route of infection via the portal vein. Patients with hepatic abscesses and no known source of infection should be evaluated for a contained mesenteric perforation of the gastrointestinal tract. Finally, in patients who fail to respond promptly to percutaneous catheter drainage of a liver abscess, a continuing source of infection, such as perforation of a jejunal diverticulum, should be suspected.
