Impacts of Oxazepam on Perch (Perca fluviatilis) Behavior: Fish Familiarized to Lake Conditions Do Not Show Predicted Anti-anxiety Response.

A current theory in environmental science states that dissolved anxiolytics (oxazepam) from wastewater effluents can reduce anti-predator behavior in fish with potentially negative impacts on prey fish populations. Here, we hypothesize that European perch (Perca fluviatilis) populations being exposed to oxazepam in situ show reduced anti-predator behavior, which has previously been observed for exposed isolated fish in laboratory studies. We tested our hypothesis by exposing a whole-lake ecosystem, containing both perch (prey) and northern pike (Esox lucius; predator), to oxazepam while tracki

Chasing away accurate results: exhaustive chase protocols underestimate maximum metabolic rate estimates in European perch Perca fluviatilis.

Metabolic rates are one of many measures that are used to explain species' response to environmental change. Static respirometry is used to calculate the standard metabolic rate (SMR) of fish, and when combined with exhaustive chase protocols it can be used to measure maximum metabolic rate (MMR) and aerobic scope (AS) as well. While these methods have been tested in comparison to swim tunnels and chambers with circular currents, they have not been tested in comparison with a no-chase control. We used a repeated-measures design to compare estimates of SMR, MMR and AS in European perch Perca fl

Endohelminths of European Perch (Perca fluviatilis) from Selected Localities in Poland with an Emphasis on Search of the Broad Fish Tapeworm Dibothriocephalus latus.

INTRODUCTION: A piscivorous fish European perch (Perca fluviatilis) is present in all types of lakes and brackish waters in Poland. Previous ichthyoparasitological surveys revealed broad spectrum of endohelminths in perch from different aquatic environments. Among them, detection of Diphyllobothrium sp. and Dibothriocephalus latus (syn. Diphyllobothrium latum) in the Pomeranian Bay is of particular interest, since D. latus is one of the causative agents of diphyllobothriasis, fish-borne parasitic zoonosis. Besides, D. latus eggs were previously detected in coprological samples of otter, wolf a

Parasite identification, succession and infection pathways in perch fry (Perca fluviatilis): new insights through a combined morphological and genetic approach.

Identification of parasite species is particularly challenging in larval and juvenile hosts, and this hampers the understanding of parasite acquisition in early life. The work described here employs a new combination of methods to identify parasite species and study parasite succession in fry of perch (Perca fluviatilis) from Lake Constance, Germany. Classical morphological diagnostics are combined with sequence comparisons between parasite life-stages collected from various hosts within the same ecosystem. In perch fry at different stages of development, 13 different parasite species were fou

The Effect of Parasite Infection on Stable Isotope Turnover Rates of δ15N, δ13C and δ34S in Multiple Tissues of Eurasian Perch Perca fluviatilis.

Stable isotope analysis of commercially and ecologically important fish can improve understanding of life-history and trophic ecology. However, accurate interpretation of stable isotope values requires knowledge of tissue-specific isotopic turnover that will help to describe differences in the isotopic composition of tissues and diet. We performed a diet-switch experiment using captive-reared parasite-free Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) and wild caught specimens of the same species, infected with the pike tapeworm Triaenophorus nodulosus living in host liver tissue. We hypothesize that met

Perch liver reaction to Triaenophorus nodulosus plerocercoids with an emphasis on piscidins 3, 4 and proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression.

Histopathological lesions caused by plerocercoids of Triaenophorus nodulosus within the liver of perch, Perca fluviatilis, from Lake Trasimeno were studied. Livers harbored 1-3 parasite larvae and pathological alterations were more marked in those with 3 plerocercoids. In the liver, larvae were encysted, surrounded by a capsule of host tissue; two of 14 plerocercoids were necrotic. In infected livers, some hepatocytes showed degenerative changes, i.e. swelling and hydropic degeneration, notably those in close proximity to larvae. By comparison, hepatocytes in uninfected livers or in regions aw

Long-term chromium exposure and its residual impact on growth, biochemical changes and immune gene expression of climbing perch (Anabas testudineus).

Accumulation of heavy metal in fish not only causes morphological, biochemical, haematological and genetic changes but also poses serious health risks to their consumers. The present study investigated the effects of chromium (Cr) exposure on the alteration of physiological parameters and the expression pattern of three candidate genes: metallothionein 2 (MT-2), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) and tumour necrosis family 1 (TNF) in a climbing perch (Koi fish). The potassium dichromate (KCr2O7) was used as a source of Cr for fish feed and fed at three experimental doses (1, 2 and 5 ppm of Cr/kg feed)

Innate immunity, oxidative stress and body indices of Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis after two weeks of exposure to artificial light at night.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) can disrupt biological rhythms of fish and other vertebrates by changing the light information of the nocturnal environment. Disrupted biorhythms can impair the immune system of vertebrates as it has been shown for conditions with continuous illumination or long-day photoperiod in many vertebrates, including fish. Nonetheless, this has not been shown so far for typical ALAN scenarios with high light intensities during day and low light intensities at night. Therefore, in this study, proxies for the innate immune system and oxidative stress as well as body indic

Branchial cadmium and copper binding and intestinal cadmium uptake in wild yellow perch (Perca flavescens) from clean and metal-contaminated lakes.

Branchial binding kinetics and gastro-intestinal uptake of copper and cadmium where examined in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) from a metal-contaminated lake (Hannah Lake, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada) and an uncontaminated lake (James Lake, North Bay, Ontario, Canada). An in vivo approach was taken for gill binding comparisons while an in vitro gut binding assay was employed for gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) uptake analysis. By investigating metal uptake at the gill and the gut we cover the two main routes of metal entry into fish. Comparisons of water and sediment chemistries, metal burdens in

Recombinant Lactococcus lactis surface-displaying the major capsid protein of sea perch iridovirus confers effective immune protection in Lateolabrax japonicus.

Sea perch iridovirus (SPIV) causes severe mortality in aquaculture. Lactococcus lactis M48, a strain isolated from the intestine of sea perch, exhibits tolerance to acidic conditions, bile salts, and hyperosmotic stress, along with excellent intestinal colonization capacity and high safety. In this study, a recombinant strain surface-displaying the SPIV major capsid protein (MCP) was constructed based on L. lactis M48, designated RE SPIV MCP M48. Fluorescence microscopy and Western blot analyses confirmed that L. lactis M48 successfully expressed the pgsA-anchored MCP-eGFP fusion protein. Oral

Karyotypes and Sex Chromosomes in Two Australian Native Freshwater Fishes, Golden Perch (Macquaria ambigua) and Murray Cod (Maccullochella peelii) (Percichthyidae).

Karyotypic data from Australian native freshwater fishes are scarce, having been described from relatively few species. Golden perch (Macquaria ambigua) and Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii) are two large-bodied freshwater fish species native to Australia with significant indigenous, cultural, recreational and commercial value. The arid landscape over much of these fishes' range, coupled with the boom and bust hydrology of their habitat, means that these species have potential to provide useful evolutionary insights, such as karyotypes and sex chromosome evolution in vertebrates. Here we appl

Effect of bioconcentration and trophic transfer on realized exposure to oxazepam in 2 predators, the dragonfly larvae (Aeshna grandis) and the Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis).

Psychoactive substances are used worldwide and constitute one of the most common groups of pharmaceutical contaminants in surface waters. Although these pharmaceuticals are designed to be efficiently eliminated from the human body, very little is known about their trophic-transfer potential in aquatic wildlife. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to quantify and compare uptake of an anxiolytic (oxazepam) from water (bioconcentration) and via the consumption of contaminated diet (trophic transfer) in 2 common freshwater predators: Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) and the dragonfly la

Transcriptomic and Physiological Responses Reveal a Time-Associated Multi-Organ Injury Pattern in European Perch (Perca fluviatilis) Under Acute Alkaline Stress.

Water alkalinization is a critical global stressor for freshwater fish, yet the systemic patterns of multi-organ responses and injury remain insufficiently understood. This study integrates histopathology, biochemistry, and multi-organ transcriptomics to provide an integrated, time-resolved assessment of stress responses in European perch (Perca fluviatilis) exposed to acute alkaline stress (20 mmol/L). The analysis indicated that alkaline stress initially causes structural disturbance of gill tissue (lamellar fusion, necrosis) within 96 h, associated with impaired osmoregulatory functions. Th
