Greater self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism in severe alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Perfectionistic individuals present exaggerated performance standards, generating a constant search for flawlessness and a high tendency to self-criticize. Dominant models distinguish three dimensions of perfectionism: namely, self-oriented, socially prescribed and other-oriented. Perfectionism constitutes a vulnerability factor for psychopathological disorders, but its role in severe alcohol use disorder (SAUD) remains unexplored. METHODS: Sixty-five recently detoxified patients with SAUD and 65 matched controls completed a perfectionism questionnaire (the Hewitt Multidimensional

Understanding How Perfectionism Impacts Intensive Interdisciplinary Pain Treatment Outcomes: A Nonrandomized Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Several factors are known to impact response to the intensive interdisciplinary pain treatment (IIPT) program described in this study, yet no research has explored the role of perfectionism. This secondary data analysis explored direct and indirect relations between perfectionism and functional disability (primary outcome) and pain severity (secondary outcome) after IIPT, with pain catastrophizing and fear of pain as mediators. METHODS: Youth (N = 253) aged 8-21 with chronic pain and associated disability completed pre- and post-IIPT measures of self-oriented perfectionism (SOP), s

Canonical Correlation Analysis of Multidimensional Perfectionism and Mental Health Among Filipino Young Adults.

Perfectionism is a multidimensional personality trait that has been consistently linked to both negative and positive mental health outcomes. Yet recent research has increasingly reduced perfectionism to broad higher-order factors leaving specific dimensions underexamined. The present study examined how the six dimensions of Multidimensional Perfectionism according to Frost et al. (1990)-Concern over Mistakes, Doubts about Actions, Personal Standards, Organization, Parental Expectations, and Parental Criticism-relate to positive and negative mental health outcomes among Filipino young adults.

Cognitive flexibility subtypes and anorexia nervosa symptom severity: Evaluating the contribution of perfectionism.

Impaired cognitive flexibility (CF) and elevated perfectionism are well-documented in anorexia nervosa (AN), yet their contribution to symptom severity remains unclear. The current study aimed to examine whether CF predicts symptom severity and whether perfectionism contributes to these associations, by applying a model-based approach distinguishing three CF subtypes. Thirty-one women with AN completed three CF tasks, as well as the Eating Disorders Examination-Questionnaire, the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, assessing symptom severity, perfecti

Examining the Relationships Between Perfectionism and Obsessive-Compulsive Symptom Dimensions Among Rural Veterans.

Perfectionism, a trait-like individual difference variable reflecting the tendency to set extremely high standards along with critical evaluations of one's own behavior, has long been regarded as a risk and maintenance factor for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, research exploring the relationship between these constructs is mixed. One explanation for these equivocal findings is the heterogeneous nature of OCD. Indeed, there is increasing evidence for distinct symptom dimensions that are more homogenous than the broad OCD phenotype. The current study examined the associations betw

Measuring the origins of perfectionism with the Roots questionnaire in university students: sociodemographic and educational correlates.

Perfectionism is increasingly prevalent among university students, yet its developmental antecedents are less understood. This study examined the perceived origins of perfectionism, early family relationships, self-acceptance, and social influences using the 16-item Roots questionnaire (Family, Self, Social) and explored sociodemographic and educational correlates. In a multicenter cross-sectional survey, 2103 Italian students (mean age = 23.4; 76% female) completed the Roots scale. Nonparametric group comparisons and k-means clustering were applied. Students generally reported strong parental

The Impact of Spiritual Well-Being on Multidimensional Perfectionism in University Students: A Nationwide Survey.

BACKGROUND: Perfectionism is a multidimensional personality trait encompassing both adaptive and maladaptive aspects that strongly influence students' psychological health. Spiritual well-being, defined by existential and religious components, has been suggested as a protective factor, yet its relationship with perfectionism remains underexplored in university populations. This study aimed to investigate these associations in a large nationwide sample of Italian undergraduates. METHODS: A total of 2103 students from public and private universities across Northern, Central, and Southern Italy

Perfectionism and objective physical health in older adults: a mediational analysis of psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: Research has suggested that the relationship between perfectionism and perceived health may be mediated by psychological distress. However, there is a lack of studies that demonstrate this relationship in older adults and that also use objective physical health measures (such as physical fitness). This study aimed to investigate whether the associations between perfectionistic dimensions and physical fitness in older adults are mediated by psychological distress. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: Older adults (N = 121; 90 women) were evaluated for perfectionism (perfectionistic striving

Dimensions of perfectionism in subtypes of anorexia nervosa, atypical anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Perfectionism is implicated in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs), yet its dimensions across ED diagnoses and behavioral presentations remain underexplored. METHOD: This study examined differences in Personal Standards and Concern Over Mistakes, two subscales of the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, among individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN), and bulimia nervosa (BN) and between restricting and binge-eating/purging behavioral presentations. Participants included 546 individuals (Mage = 30.1, 97 % female) meeting DS

Perfectionism in patients with eating disorders: The role of metacognitive beliefs and repetitive negative thinking.

INTRODUCTION: Using the Self-Regulatory Executive Function model as a basis, this study explored whether, in patients with eating disorders (EDs), metacognitions and repetitive negative thinking are associated with higher levels of perfectionisms. METHODS: One hundred twenty-three outpatients with EDs were recruited. Perfectionism, metacognitive beliefs, worry, rumination, anger rumination, affective and eating symptoms were assessed. Correlation and hierarchal regression analyses were run. RESULTS: Higher endorsement of positive beliefs about worry was associated with higher levels of 'pers

No perfect sleep! A systematic review of the link between multidimensional perfectionism and sleep disturbance.

The view that perfectionists are prone to experiencing sleep disturbance is widely held. Yet, almost three decades of empirical research have yielded conflicting results. Whereas some researchers viewed perfectionism as a risk factor for sleep disturbance, others spoke of "adaptive" or "positive" forms of perfectionism in the context of sleep. The multidimensional conceptualisation of perfectionism may resolve this disagreement. Thus, this systematic review aimed to clarify the perfectionism-sleep disturbance link using the widely accepted two-dimensional perfectionism model, differentiating p

Influence of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Perfectionism on Musician's Dystonia: a Case Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Musician's dystonia (MD) is a task-specific movement disorder characterized by muscle cramps and impaired voluntary motor-control whilst playing a musical instrument. Recent studies suggest an involvement of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in the development of MD. OBJECTIVES: By investigating the prevalence of ACEs in MD patients with perfectionism as possible mediating factor this study aims to gain further insights into the etiology of MD. METHODS: The Adverse Childhood Experiences Scale (ACE-S), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and Frost's Multidimensional Perfec

Is perfectionism always unhealthy? Examining the moderating effects of psychological flexibility and self-compassion.

OBJECTIVE: Perfectionism is generally associated with worse mental health outcomes, though evidence suggests elements of it may be helpful. In light of these findings, we examined whether psychological skills like psychological flexibility and self-compassion moderated the relationship between perfectionism and wellbeing (i.e., quality of life, symptom impairment, and psychological distress). METHODS: Undergraduate students (N = 677) completed self-report measures. RESULTS: A latent profile analysis identified three perfectionism groups (low, average, and high) based on four perfectionism su

The intertwined path of perfectionism and self-criticism in a client with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

Psychotherapy for obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), where perfectionism is a defining criterion, is understudied. Despite a high prevalence few evidence-based treatments are available for the presentation. Here we describe the course of a 6-month program of metacognitive interpersonal therapy with an OCPD patient with prominent perfectionism and self-criticism, which were considered primary outcomes of the case study. Therapy aimed initially at increasing awareness of maladaptive interpersonal schemas and promoting a healthy self. First, behavioral experiments were used to try

The cross-sectional relationship between body dysmorphic disorder and perfectionism: a meta-analysis.

Perfectionism has been theoretically implicated in the development and maintenance of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), but a quantitative synthesis of its cross-sectional relationship with BDD symptom severity is lacking. The present meta-analysis therefore examines the strength and consistency of this relationship across existing studies. A random-effects meta-analysis of 34 studies comprising a total of 13 107 participants was conducted. Studies were included if they assessed BDD symptoms and perfectionism using validated instruments. Subgroup analyses were used to examine perfectionism dimen

Dark triad personality traits and perfectionism in Peruvian university students: a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although studies on the dark triad and perfectionism have been conducted in different regions, most rely on correlational or regression approaches and rarely explore these traits using psychological network analysis. Furthermore, few investigations have examined the role of sociodemographic variables, such as gender and age, in shaping these associations. OBJECTIVE: In this study, the relationship between the Dark Triad and perfectionism in Peruvian university students was analyzed by means of psychological network analysis including variables such as gender and age. METHODS: The

Two-factor higher-order model of perfectionism in Iranian general and clinical samples.

BACKGROUND: Studies in Western cultures have shown that perfectionism is conceptualized by two-factor higher-order model including perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns. However, little is known about the construct of perfectionism in Eastern societies. Thus, we examined the two-factor higher-order model of perfectionism in Iranian general and clinical samples. METHODS: We recruited a general population sample (n = 384) and patients with major depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, and eating disorders (n = 152) from Tehran, Iran from Sep

Brief Group Intervention Targeting Perfectionism in Adults with Anorexia Nervosa: Empirically Informed Protocol.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the perfectionism group intervention in adults with anorexia nervosa (AN) in an inpatient setting. METHOD: Adults with AN (N = 35) received six weekly sessions of the empirically informed intervention with experiential exercises. Participants' self-reported perfectionism and satisfaction were collected pre-group and post-group intervention. RESULTS: Statistically, significant differences were observed for overall perfectionism, concern over mistakes and personal standard dimensions of perfectionism. Participants found the sessions useful and felt confi

Exploring the Expression and Perceived Relational Correlates of Perfectionism in Higher Education: A Multicenter Study.

Background: Perfectionism is a multidimensional disposition marked by exceptionally high standards and self-worth contingent on flawless performance. In university settings, academic demands may amplify perfectionistic pressure, with maladaptive outcomes most consistently linked to socially prescribed expectations and self-critical failure processing. This study profiled perfectionism dimensions in Italian university students and examined their associations with perceived relational and self-related correlates (Roots). Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted with Italian uni

GLP-1 is associated with perfectionism in Swedish women with anorexia nervosa, independent of BMI.

PURPOSE: Based on the presence of early satiety in anorexia nervosa (AN), which may delay recovery, and given the dramatic impact of GLP-1 and GIP analog treatment on satiety and weight reduction in obesity by diminishing the sensation of hunger, we initiated this cross-sectional pilot study to explore fasting incretin levels in AN and to identify possible correlations between these hormones and psychiatric symptoms. METHODS: 17 female subjects aged 18-35 were enrolled; 10 previously diagnosed with AN (5 weight restored, 5 non-weight restored) and 7 healthy controls (HC). Fasting blood sample
