Background: Deceptive caffeine ingestion has shown inconsistent effects as an ergogenic aid for short-term exercises. Objective: Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the potential placebo effect of deceptive caffeine ingestion on short-term performance during countermovement and repeated-jump tests, as well as bench press throw and bench press-to-failure assessments, and to document any associated side effects. Methods: A repeated, randomized, and counterbalanced design was implemented to compare the effects of ingesting a placebo claimed to be caffeine with a control condition in

BACKGROUND: Sodium bicarbonate (SB) supplementation may enhance short-term, high-intensity exercise performance through improved extracellular buffering capacity, but its effect on continuous running performance has not been systematically evaluated. We conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials examining the effects of oral single-dose SB supplementation on continuous running performance.
METHODS: We searched Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for eligible trials published through 31 December 20

BACKGROUND: Preexercise caffeine intake has proven to exert ergogenic effects on cycling performance. However, whether these benefits are also observed under fatigue conditions remains largely unexplored. We aimed to assess the effect of caffeine ingested during prolonged cycling on subsequent time-trial performance in trained cyclists.
METHODS: The study followed a triple-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over design. Eleven well-trained junior cyclists (17 ± 1 years) performed a field-based 8-min time trial under "fresh" conditions (i.e., after their usual warm-up) or after two

INTRODUCTION: Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) ingestion has been found to be ergogenic in high-intensity exercise that ranges from 1 to 10 min; however, limited studies have investigated high-intensity exercise beyond this duration.
PURPOSE: The present study aimed to determine the effect of NaHCO3 ingested using a carbohydrate hydrogel delivery system on 40 km time trial (TT) performance in trained male cyclists.
METHODS: Fourteen trained male cyclists ingested 0.3 g kg-1 BM NaHCO3 (Maurten AB, Sweden) to determine individualised peak alkalosis, which established time of ingestion prior to exer

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs) are a subclassification of image performance enhancing drugs (IPEDs). While AAS use is most prevalent among people in athletics, there is also high lifetime prevalence of AAS use among prisoners. This study reports the qualitative detection of AASs in seized samples from the Scottish prisons from 2019-2023. Additionally, methods were developed for the quantitative analysis of AASs using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and applied to 61 samples of tablets or powders seized from Scottish prisons between July 2022 and July 2023. Since 2022, there h

INTRODUCTION: To ascertain the adverse health outcomes experienced by those using prescribed testosterone and non-prescribed anabolic-androgenic steroids presenting to general practitioner (GP) clinics.
METHODS: Retrospective clinical audit from nine GP clinics in major metropolitan areas across three Australian states. Data included demographic and individual characteristics (age, sexuality, body mass index, smoking status and HIV status); performance and image-enhancing drug use (type, reasons for use, patient-reported adverse effects); and blood biochemistry measurements (lipid profiles, l

This study aimed to examine sex differences in acute caffeine intake on repeated sprint performance. Fifty-two resistance-trained individuals (age: 24.6 ± 4.5 years and sex (female/male): 26/26) participated in a randomized, triple-blind, cross-over, and placebo-controlled study. Participants ingested 3 mg/kg caffeine or placebo and, after 60 min, performed 4 Wingate tests (Wt), consisting of a 30 s all-out lower-body sprint against an individualized resisted load, with 90 s rest periods between sprints. Mean (Wmean) and peak (Wpeak) power showed an interaction between sprint and supplement (P

This systematic review and meta-analysis (CRD420251006746) investigated the impact of inhaled β2-adrenoceptor (AR) agonists (IBA) with exemption according to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) 2025 list on athletic performance, respiratory, and cardiovascular outcomes. A key subgroup analysis focused on IBA administered within WADA 2025 permitted dose intervals. Findings indicate that IBA significantly improved sprint time by 0.30 s (95% CI 0.52-0.07) overall, and by 0.27 s (95% CI 0.50-0.05) in healthy subjects, with long-acting β2-AR agonists yielding a 0.49 s (95% CI 0.81-0.17) improvement

Background: Explosive lower limb power, a critical determinant of success in volleyball, is a prime candidate for focused research. Consequently, nutritional supplements are commonly employed to gain an ergogenic edge. Despite this widespread practice, a comprehensive and evidence-based ranking of supplements for improving this key attribute is lacking, leaving athletes and practitioners without targeted evidence to guide decisions. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, CENTRAL, and Embase were searched from inception to 1 August 2025. We included RCTs in volleyball athletes (≥14 years) with ≥1-wee

This study examined relationship status (e.g., single versus not single) and number of sexual partners in relation to muscularity- and disordered eating-related attitudes and behaviors among 1090 cisgender gay men enrolled in The PRIDE Study in 2018. Participants completed measures assessing muscle dysmorphia (MD) symptoms, disordered eating attitudes and behaviors, and appearance- and performance-enhancing drug or supplement (APEDS) use. In linear regression models adjusting for theoretically relevant covariates, neither relationship status nor number of past-month sexual partners was associa

In an anonymous online study (N = 824), we investigated the frequency of use of appearance and performance-enhancing drugs and supplements (APEDS) in a sample of young men (15−30 years) in Sweden, along with their self-reported eating disorder (ED) symptoms, drive for muscularity and sexual orientation. A total of 129 participants (16.1%) reported regular use of supplements (at least once a week), including one individual using anabolic steroids (0.1%), while a lifetime use of APEDS was reported by 32.3%. The overlap between those using protein supplements and creatine was large (83.6%). Some

PURPOSE: Hypoxic acclimation enhances convective oxygen delivery to the muscles. Heat acclimation-elicited thermoregulatory benefits have been suggested not to be negated by adding daily exposure to hypoxia. Whether concomitant acclimation to both heat and hypoxia offers a synergistic enhancement of aerobic performance in thermoneutral or hot conditions remains unresolved.
METHODS: Eight young males ([Formula: see text]: 51.6 ± 4.6 mL min-1 kg-1) underwent a 10-day normobaric hypoxic confinement (FiO2 = 0.14) interspersed with daily 90-min normoxic controlled hyperthermia (target rectal tempe

This research examined the effects of single-dose molecular hydrogen (H2) supplements on acid-base status and local muscle deoxygenation during rest, high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT) performance, and recovery. Ten healthy, trained subjects in a randomized, double-blind, crossover design received H2-rich calcium powder (HCP) (1500 mg, containing 2.544 μg of H2) or H2-depleted placebo (1500 mg) supplements 1 h pre-exercise. They performed six bouts of 7 s all-out pedaling (HIIT) at 7.5% of body weight separated by 40 s pedaling intervals, followed by a recovery period. Blood gases' pH

Recent studies suggest that the anabolic effect of ecdysterone, a naturally occurring steroid hormone claimed to enhance physical performance, is mediated by estrogen receptor (ER) binding. In comparison with the prohibited anabolic agents (e.g., metandienone and others), ecdysterone revealed to be even more effective in a recent study performed in rats. However, scientific studies in humans are very rarely accessible. Thus, our project aimed at investigating the effects of ecdysterone-containing products on human sport exercise. A 10-week intervention study of strength training of young men (

CONTEXT: The lifetime prevalence of anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) use is estimated at 1% to 5% worldwide. AAS use occurs primarily male elite athletes and men who want a muscular appearance. The evidence for effective, safe management of AAS cessation and withdrawal is weak.
DESIGN: Key studies were extracted from PubMed (1990-2018) and Google Scholar with reference searches from relevant retrieved articles.
RESULTS: The proven adverse effects of AASs include suppression of the gonadal axis and infertility, hirsutism and defeminization in women, and erythrocytosis. Alkylated AASs that ar

Cordyceps militaris is an entomopathogenic fungus traditionally used in Asian ethnomedicine and increasingly investigated for its potential health-promoting properties, including immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activities. In recent years, it has gained attention as a dietary supplement with possible applications in sports nutrition. This narrative review summarizes and critically evaluates the current human evidence regarding the ergogenic and post-exercise recovery effects of C. militaris supplementation in healthy individuals. A structured database search was conducted using predefin
