BACKGROUND Effusive-constrictive pericarditis (ECP) is an uncommon clinical syndrome characterized by the coexistence of pericardial effusion and constriction involving the visceral pericardium. This differs from constrictive pericarditis, which presents with thickening of the pericardium without effusions. Specific diagnostic criteria of ECP include the failure of right atrial pressure to decrease by 50% or reach a new level below 10 mmHg after normalization of intrapericardial pressure. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 32-year-old obese man with multiple comorbidities who initially prese

A 78-year-old cachectic woman who previously had repair of atrial septal defect was admitted to the hospital for congestive heart failure. Cardiac workup revealed chronic constrictive pericarditis; no evidence of coronary or valvular disease was found. She underwent corrective surgery for pericardiectomy. Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography after pericardiectomy demonstrated acute development of severe mitral regurgitation, which was not preoperatively observed. She eventually required mitral valve replacement and tricuspid valve repair after conservative management failed. She rec

Constrictive pericarditis is quite rare complication of messenger ribonucleic acid-based severe acute respiratory syndrome-Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine. It is a severe clinical picture with clinical symptoms of right ventricular failure. Initial physical examination, laboratory work-up, and chest X-ray may yield non-specific findings. Echocardiography, computed tomography, and cardiac catheterization are other diagnostic tools. Surgery with pericardiectomy is the definitive treatment option. Herein, we report a case of pericardiectomy after constrictive pericarditis associated with the s

A case of severe mitral regurgitation (MR) that was masked by constrictive pericarditis and revealed after pericardiectomy is presented. Diagnosis was made intraoperatively with transesophageal echocardiography. Mitral valve repair was performed using a mitral annuloplasty ring. In some cases, worsening MR after pericardiectomy has been demonstrated to return to baseline with time. In the patient described, MR was severe with secondary ischemic pathology; therefore the decision was made to repair the mitral valve. Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography played a major role in the decis

BACKGROUND: Pericardiectomy is the final treatment for constrictive pericarditis. However, this greatest surgical approach is still very controversial. This study pursued to assess the outcomes in patients with recurrent chronic constrictive pericarditis undergoing reoperated pericardiectomy via median sternotomy versus left anterolateral thoracotomy and to explain which surgical approaches might be better for recurrent chronic constrictive pericarditis.
METHODS: A total of 24 patients were identified with recurrent chronic constrictive pericarditis and underwent reoperation with pericardiect

Constrictive pericarditis caused by malignancy is a rare but serious condition, with limited reports on its palliative surgical management. In particular, pericardial metastasis from squamous cell carcinoma of the breast is extremely uncommon, and the role of pericardiectomy in such cases remains unclear. A 57-year-old woman underwent a left mastectomy for squamous cell carcinoma of the breast at the age of 54 years. Two years later, the patient developed cardiac tamponade and underwent pericardiocentesis. Cytological examination confirmed malignant pericarditis due to recurrent breast cancer.

Familial platelet disorder with associated myeloid malignancies (FPDMM) is caused by germline RUNX1 mutations and characterized by thrombocytopenia and increased risk of hematologic malignancies. We recently launched a longitudinal natural history study for patients with FPDMM. Among 27 families with research genomic data by the end of 2021, 26 different germline RUNX1 variants were detected. Besides missense mutations enriched in Runt homology domain and loss-of-function mutations distributed throughout the gene, splice-region mutations and large deletions were detected in 6 and 7 families, r

Mesothelioma is a very aggressive malignant tumor with low survival rates that is often diagnosed belatedly. Pericardial effusion is a common consequence in cases of mesothelioma, with pericardiocentesis and pericardiectomy indicated; therefor thoracocentesis is necessary to drain the contents no longer retained in the pericardium. The present report describes a mesothelioma-carrying dog with a history of cardiac tamponade that underwent thoracoscopic pericardiectomy and, later, thoracoscopic implantation of a fully implantable catheter to function as a thoracic drain. Patients with Mulibrey nanism (MUL) present with growth failure and multiple organ manifestations, and MUL is caused by mutations in TRIM37. In this article, we report on the first case series of Japanese patients with MUL who developed congestive heart failure due to constrictive pericarditis. Our case series suggests that early diagnosis and total pericardiectomy before adherence of the pericardium might provide clinical benefit and better prognosis for MUL.

Coronary artery fistulae (CAF) are uncommon heart defects defined as a communication between a coronary artery and a cardiac chamber or vascular structure. They are frequently asymptomatic; nevertheless, they can produce angina, dyspnea or cardiac failure. CAF are believed to be congenital; however, isolated cases of CAF have been described as rare complications of cardiac surgery. We report the percutaneous closure of a giant CAF in an adult patient with angina and previous pericardiectomy.

BACKGROUND: Low cardiac output syndrome is the main cause of death after pericardiectomy.
METHODS: Patients who underwent pericardiectomy for constrictive pericarditis from January 2009 to October 2020 at our hospital were included in the study. Histopathologic studies of pericardium tissue from every patient were performed. All survivors were followed up.
RESULTS: Ninety-two consecutive patients underdoing pericardiectomy were included in the study. The incidence of postoperative low cardiac output syndrome was 10.7% (10/92). There were five operative deaths. Mortality and incidence of LCOS

PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION: Pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade is an uncommon metastatic manifestation of ovarian tumors, with only one previously reported case involving a borderline ovarian tumor (BOT).
CASE: A 50-year-old woman was diagnosed and treated for a primary Stage IIc BOT. The disease recurred as an emergency pericardiocentesis eight years later, which was resected following pericardial effusion with a cardiac tamponade. This occurred two more times, and on the last occasion, drainage failed to relieve her symptoms. However, her symptoms resolved after the creation of a per

OBJECTIVES: Although pericardiectomy is an effective treatment for constrictive pericarditis (CP), clinical outcomes are not always successful. Pericardial calcification is a unique finding in CP, although the amount and localization of calcification can vary. We investigated how the pattern and amount of pericardial calcification affect mid-term postoperative outcomes after pericardiectomy to treat CP.
METHODS: All patients of total pericardiectomy in our hospital from 2010 to 2020 were enrolled. Preoperative Computed tomography (CT) scans of 98 consecutive patients were available and analyz

The majority of cases of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli are self-limited; however, the infection can occasionally be complicated by more severe phenomena, such as thrombotic microangiopathy, with resultant end-organ damage to the kidneys, colon, nervous system, and various other tissues. Shiga toxin-induced hemolytic uremic syndrome (ST-HUS)-the constellation of thrombocytopenia, hemolysis, and renal failure resulting from thrombotic microangiopathy in a subset of infections producing the Shiga toxin-is classically observed in the pediatric population. Nevertheless, the diagnosis shoul

The present study was designed to identify the preoperative clinical and imaging findings influencing adverse clinical outcomes in patients with chronic constrictive pericarditis after pericardiectomy. Patients with constrictive pericarditis who underwent pericardiectomy between January 2009 and September 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative evaluations included assessments of clinical symptoms, comorbidities, laboratory tests, cardiac computed tomography (CT), and transthoracic echocardiography. The volume of pericardial calcifications was quantified on calcium scoring CT. Adverse

BACKGROUND: Chronic constrictive pericarditis (CCP) is the end result of chronic inflammation of the pericardium. Developing countries continue to face a significant burden of CCP secondary to tuberculous pericarditis. Surgical pericardiectomy offers potential cure. However, there is paucity of echocardiography data in post-pericardiectomy patients vis-a-vis their clinical status. We studied the changes in multiple echocardiographic parameters in these patients before and after pericardiectomy.
METHODS: Twenty-three patients (14 men, 9 women) who underwent pericardiectomy for CCP in the last

A middle-aged man presented to the Department of Medicine of our hospital due to exertional dyspnoea, ascites and peripheral oedema. He was later transferred to the Department of Heart Disease as his echocardiography indicated constrictive pericarditis, confirmed by cardiac MRI and cardiac catheterisation. After a thorough investigation, his constrictive pericarditis was assumed to be caused by tuberculosis. He was treated with antituberculosis therapy followed by successful surgical subtotal pericardiectomy, leading to immediate improvement of haemodynamics, regression of symptoms and recover

OBJECTIVES: Constrictive pericarditis (CP) is an uncommon disease with multiple causes and unclear clinical outcomes. To date, few publications have clearly defined risk factors of poor outcomes after surgery for CP. We performed a retrospective analysis of almost 100 patients undergoing surgical treatment for CP at a single institution in order to identify risk factors for perioperative and long-term mortality.
METHODS: A total of 97 consecutive patients (67.0% male) undergoing surgery for CP at our institution from 1995 to 2012 were included in the study. CP was diagnosed either preoperativ
