Over Ten-Year Survival Rates of Radicular Cyst-Causing Teeth and Factors Affecting Long-Term Outcomes With Apical Microsurgery: A Single-Centre Retrospective Analysis.

Purpose This study aimed to evaluate the long-term efficacy and identify prognostic factors influencing the survival of teeth with radicular cysts treated by apical microsurgery. Methods A total of 212 teeth from 152 patients with histopathologically confirmed radicular cysts who underwent apical microsurgery at Gunma University Hospital between 2009 and 2021 were included. Treatment outcomes were classified as "success" if the treated tooth was preserved and "failure" if the tooth was extracted. Clinical variables showing significant differences in univariate analysis were included in a logis

The inflammatory paradental cyst.

The inflammatory paradental cyst has previously been described as the collateral inflammatory cyst, the inflammatory lateral periodontal cyst, the paradental cyst, or the mandibular infected buccal cyst. Clinical, radiographic, and histologic features of 29 inflammatory paradental cysts diagnosed over a 5-year period were studied. The cysts occurred in relation to a partly or fully erupted tooth with a vital pulp. Twenty-seven of the cysts were located in the mandible and the remaining two in the maxilla. The mandibular cysts were in all cases associated with a molar. The observation that the

Resolution of a Cystic Endodontic-Periodontal Lesion Utilizing Combined Apicoectomy and Guided Tissue Regeneration: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Endodontic-periodontal combined lesions pose a treatment challenge for clinicians, especially when the lesion is persistent and does not show signs of healing after initial endodontic treatment. This case report describes interdisciplinary management of a non-healing combined endodontic-periodontal lesion related to a peri-apical cyst, through a combined approach of apicoectomy and guided tissue regeneration (GTR) with enamel matrix derivative (EMD). Most documented cases have been treated in a sequential manner, with minimal literature present on the effects of a combined approa

Mandibular infected buccal cyst and paradental cyst: the same or separate entities?

The WHO classification of odontogenic cysts includes the radicular (residual) and paradental (inflammatory collateral; mandibular infected buccal) cysts as inflammatory odontogenic cysts. Because the paradental group of inflammatory cysts may clinically cause diagnostic and therapeutic problems when they are associated with first and second molar teeth it was decided to review the literature and present an additional case. The aetiology and histological features of the inflammatory collateral cyst, the paradental cyst and the mandibular infected buccal cyst are identical and the differences th

The Surgical Management of a Radicular Cyst in the Maxillary Anterior Region - A Case Report.

Radicular cysts are the most common forms of cysts in the jaws. They develop from epithelial residues in the periodontal ligament in response to periapical infection following pulpal necrosis. This condition is typically asymptomatic and mostly affects the tooth's apices. It primarily affects non-vital teeth and is characterized by inflammation. Cyst development is the final stage of the inflammatory process after a periapical infection; hence, it often occurs later in life. A cyst in the maxilla can occasionally spread across the maxillary sinus. Radicular cysts can be treated with surgical e

Clinical, radiographic, and histological findings of chronic inflammatory periapical lesions - A clinical study.

AIM: The present study aimed at comparing clinical, radiographical, and histological findings in chronic periapical lesions such as cysts, granuloma, and abscess. METHODOLOGY: The present study was conducted on 148 teeth having chronic inflammatory periapical lesions with or without nonsurgical endodontic treatment. Endodontic surgery was performed by single trained endodontist. After surgical endodontic treatment, biopsy sections of teeth were assessed histologically. All slides stained with hematoxylin/eosin and Gomori trichrome for light microscopy assessment. RESULTS: Out of 148 teeth, 4

Update on a rare mandibular osteolytic lesion in childhood: the buccal bifurcation cyst.

Buccal bifurcation cyst is a rare, uncommon buccal cystic lesion associated with the permanent mandibular first molar in children just prior to tooth eruption, and is categorized by the World Health Organization as an odontogenic cyst occurring in a vital tooth, near the buccal cervical margin of the lateral aspect of a root, as a result of an inflammatory process in a periodontal pocket. The aim of this study is to present a series of three similar mandibular buccal bifurcation cyst cases, by providing clinical, radiological and histological characterization of the lesion, in order to lead cl

Enucleation of jaw cyst combined with intentional replantation to retain cyst-involved teeth.

BACKGROUND: Jaw cysts often deeply involve adjacent tooth roots, making it difficult to preserve them. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the effectiveness of an intentional replantation (IR) strategy combined with cyst enucleation in preserving cyst-involved teeth during jaw cyst removal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients with jaw cysts and deeply involved teeth were treated with IR and cyst enucleation. All patients received root canal therapy prior to surgery, except for one patient who received it during surgery. The involved teeth were extracted, and the roo

Odontogenic cysts: a retrospective study of 1227 cases in an Iranian population from 1987 to 2007.

Odontogenic cysts constitute a major part of oral pathological lesions, but little is known about their distribution patterns in various populations. In this retrospective study, patient records from the archive of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the Faculty of Dentistry affiliated to the Tehran University of Medical Sciences were reviewed. Cases diagnosed as odontogenic cyst from 1987 to 2007 were selected and histopathologically re-evaluated to confirm the diagnosis. Patients' demographic information (age and sex) and location of the lesion were recorded and analyzed us

Biofilms and apical periodontitis: study of prevalence and association with clinical and histopathologic findings.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the prevalence of bacterial biofilms in untreated and treated root canals of teeth evincing apical periodontitis. The associations of biofilms with clinical conditions, radiographic size, and the histopathologic type of apical periodontitis were also investigated. METHODS: The material comprised biopsy specimens from 106 (64 untreated and 42 treated) roots of teeth with apical periodontitis. Specimens were obtained by apical surgery or extraction and were processed for histopathologic and histobacteriologic techniques. RESULTS: Bacteria were found in all bu

Jaw Osteomyelitis of Impacted Tooth After Radiotherapy: A Report of a Case.

Maxillofacial radiotherapy has a significant negative impact on oral health and impacted teeth often lead to diseases such as jaw cysts and periapical periodontitis. This article reports a case of jaw osteomyelitis (with both impacted teeth and periodontitis) occurring 10 years after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. There is no systematic treatment plan for patients with both pathogenic factors in clinical practice, so it is important to develop a systematic and complete treatment plan before radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The periodontal treatment of patients receiving radiotherapy

Glandular odontogenic cyst: a challenge in diagnosis and treatment.

The present review analyzes the accumulated data from all cases of glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) reported in the English language literature. In the 20 years since it was first described, 111 cases have been reported, an incidence of 0.2% of odontogenic cysts. The age range is 14-75, mean 45.7, with a M/F ratio of 1.3:1. GOC has a predilection for the mandible (70%), affecting both anterior and posterior areas. It is typically radiolucent, well defined, either unilocular (53.8%) or multilocular (46.2%). Frequent perforation (61%) and of thinning of cortical plates (24.4%) indicate aggressiv
