Primary lymphoma of peripheral nerve: report of four cases.

Lymphoma presenting as a solitary tumor of peripheral nerve is exceedingly rare, with only six previously reported cases. The authors describe an additional four cases of primary lymphoma of peripheral nerve involving the sciatic nerve (two cases), the radial nerve, and the sympathetic chain and spinal nerve. The patients were two men and two women with an average age of 55.5 years. All tumors were high-grade B-cell lymphomas. Two patients experienced relapse of disease with involvement of other nervous system sites and died of lymphoma. One patient is alive with stable local disease at 57 mon

Ultrasonography of peripheral nerve tumours: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve tumours (PNTs) are rare, but important cause of peripheral nerve dysfunction. The aim of the study was to present a series of consecutive patients with PNTs evaluated in authors' ultrasonography (US) practice. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The electronic medical records of patients with PNTs examined at our US laboratory from February 2013 to May 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Data on gender, age, clinical features, PNT location, electrodiagnostic (EDx) features and US findings were collected. RESULTS: In the analyzed period 2845 patients were examined in our US lab

Paraneoplastic peripheral neuropathy.

Paraneoplastic peripheral neuropathies are not common. They are out-numbered by the far more common peripheral neuropathies that occur either as a direct result of the cancer (metastases) or its treatment (usually chemotherapy). Nevertheless, paraneoplastic peripheral neuropathies are important because they may be the first sign of an otherwise occult cancer and/or because they may substantially disable the patient even when the cancer itself is asymptomatic. Paraneoplastic disorders are sometimes marked by the presence of autoantibodies that react with proteins both in the underlying cancer a

[Neurofibromatosis and stenosis of the aqueduct of Sylvius. A magnetic resonance assessment].

Von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis is an autosomal dominant disease involving peripheral nerves and central nervous system. Obstructive hydrocephalus in this disease represents a common finding when it is due to the development of infratentorial neoplasm. Nevertheless, the occurrence of isolated nonneoplastic aqueductal stenosis in patients affected by neurofibromatosis has been described rarely. The authors report two cases of primary nontumoral aqueductal stenosis associated with Von Recklinghausen's disease who were diagnosed by CT scan and MRI. The pathogenesis of aqueductal narrowing

CD5-Positive Mature B-Cell Neoplasm With Large-Cell Morphology, Predominant Bone Marrow Involvement, and a Leukemic Peripheral Blood Presentation: A Case Report.

A 65-year-old man presenting with pancytopenia and circulating large atypical cells was initially suspected of having acute leukemia. Flow cytometric analysis demonstrated a mature clonal B-cell phenotype, and the integrated findings supported a diagnosis of a CD5-positive mature B-cell neoplasm with large-cell morphology, predominant bone marrow involvement, and a leukemic peripheral blood presentation. Based on the available staging data, primary bone marrow DLBCL was suspected but could not be definitively confirmed. The neoplasm was characterized by CD5 expression, a BCL6 rearrangement, an

Intracytoplasmic lumina in ependymomas: an ultrastructural study.

Intracytoplasmic lumina (ICL) are rarely described in tumors of the central nervous system. The morphogenesis of ICL remains incompletely characterized. Ultrastructural features of ICL in six ependymomas (one from lateral ventricle, three from fourth ventricle, and two from spinal cord) and three myxopapillary ependymomas of the filum terminale were analyzed. Two types of ICL were identified: ICL with both microvilli and cilia, and ICL with only microvilli. Some ICL also contained granulofibrillary or condensed material. Ciliated ICL were common in ependymomas of the ventricles, whereas noncil

Human immunodeficiency virus-related lymphoreticular malignancies and peripheral neurologic disease. A report of four cases.

The most common human immunodeficiency virus-related (HIV) malignancies to date include Kaposi's sarcoma and the high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. There also appears to be an association between HIV and an aggressive form of Hodgkin's disease. In addition, there is a spectrum of HIV-related central and peripheral neurologic syndromes. This article documents four patients with HIV-associated lymphoma who presented with peripheral neurologic syndromes as part of their neoplastic process. Autopsy results obtained from two of these patients showed direct nerve infiltration by lymphoma. All patie

An unusual giant schwannoma of cervical sympathetic chain: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Schwannomas are benign, well-differentiated tumors that originate from Schwann cells. Involvement of the cervical sympathetic nerve is relatively rare. Computed tomography is indispensable for the diagnosis. The treatment is surgical. Histological examination confirms the diagnosis. Horner's syndrome postoperatively is supportive of the diagnosis. The rarity of giant cervical sympathetic chain schwannoma made the case of our patient interesting to report. Furthermore, our patient's immense tumor size is very rare, and we could not find any similar report in the literature. Cervical

Fibroproliferative neuromas may occur after iatrogenic injury for lipomatosis of nerve.

BACKGROUND: Lipomatosis of nerve (LN) is a condition associated with nerve-territory overgrowth. We have noted a unique type of neuroma at sites of LN injury; the neuroma extends beyond the epineurium, enhances, and appears to enlarge over time. OBJECTIVE: We sought to understand the relationship between fibroproliferative scarring and surgery performed on the nerve. METHODS: A review of the searchable records for LN at our institution found 52 cases, confirmed by pathology or pathognomonic appearance on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Clinical histories were reviewed to categorize the sur

Causes of death in patients with malignant adrenal tumours: a population-based analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the causes of death and compute the risk of mortality due to each cause among patients with malignant adrenal tumours. METHODS: Data from malignant adrenal tumour patients were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (2004-2020). With reference data from the general population, the standardized mortality ratio (SMR) was calculated to assess all causes of death for malignant adrenal tumour patients. RESULTS: A total of 1651 patients who died from primary malignant adrenal neoplasms were included; 854 cases of a

[Gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumor].

Gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumors (GAN-tumor) are rare malignant neurogenic stromal tumors of the intestinal tract. The origin is suspected in the autonomic nerve plexus Meissner or Auerbach with the interstitial cells of Cajal as precursors. We report on a 53-year-old patient with a clinical apparent and radiological 5 cm measuring tumor of the jejunum, which was resected and immunohistochemically verified as GAN-tumor. Within the follow-up of 29 months metastases appeared within the omentum majus with a diffuse peritoneal spreading. Several trials of adjuvant chemotherapy (adriamycine/

Bowel perforation due to gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumour associated with neurofibromatosis type 1.

Gastrointestinal autonomic nerve (GAN) tumours form a distinct subcategory of gastrointestinal stromal tumours, and are thought to originate from the enteric autonomic plexus. To date, a total of 45 cases have been documented in the literature; a few of these cases were associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). Bowel perforation due to other gastrointestinal stromal tumours has been reported only twice, but never in association with a GAN tumour. We describe a 40-year-old woman with NF-1 who had bowel perforation due to a GAN tumour. The patient underwent radical surgical resection and

Diffuse, multicentric neurogenic tumors in two macerated fetuses: a possible intrauterine form of neurofibromatosis.

Two tiny macerated fetuses with a remarkably similar pattern of multicentric neurogenic neoplasms of both paravertebral autonomic structures and peripheral nerves are described. Maceration precluded further histologic classification of the neoplasms in either fetus. The first fetus had a Meckel's diverticulum, short attachment of the small bowel mesentery, pulmonary hypoplasia, and intrauterine growth retardation. The second had the sympus bipus variant of sirenomelia sequence. The multicentric neoplasms in these two fetuses are very similar to those previously described in a few neonates and

Myelographic appearance of meningo-vascular lymphoma involving cauda equina.

The myelographic pattern of diffuse meningo-vascular infiltration of the cauda equina is presented as characterized by marked enlargement of the nerve root shadows and occasional nodulation. This appearance, when coupled with appropriate clinical and laboratory findings, allows a specific diagnosis to be made.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) called also von Recklinghausen's disease is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder with a  complex clinical course. Clinical signs and symptoms concern mainly skin (with pigmentation abnormalities- café au lait macules, axillary/groin freckling and neurofibromas) and central nervous system (cognitive impairment, epilepsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and gliomas). However, pathologic changes may also affect other organs and systems, including skeletal system (scoliosis, hypostature, osteoporosis, pseudoarthrosis and sphenoid wing dysplasia) or cardiov

Clinically probable paraneoplastic vasculitic peripheral neuropathy in primary central nervous system lymphoma: a case report.

Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a malignant tumor known to cause direct mass effects and various paraneoplastic syndromes. However, paraneoplastic vasculitic peripheral neuropathy is rarely associated with PCNSL. In this case report, we describe a patient with PCNSL who presented with probable paraneoplastic vasculitic peripheral neuropathy. The patient initially experienced recurrent pain and weakness in bilateral lower limbs for two years, followed by a sudden decline in consciousness over two days. A biopsy of the right sural nerve revealed probable vasculitic peripheral
