Combining information from multiple senses is essential to object recognition, core to the ability to learn concepts, make new inferences, and generalize across distinct entities. Yet how the mind combines sensory input into coherent crossmodal representations - the crossmodal binding problem - remains poorly understood. Here, we applied multi-echo fMRI across a 4-day paradigm, in which participants learned three-dimensional crossmodal representations created from well-characterized unimodal visual shape and sound features. Our novel paradigm decoupled the learned crossmodal object representat

We evaluated recent proposals that structures in the medial temporal lobe (MTL)--in particular, perirhinal cortex--support not just memory but certain kinds of perceptual abilities as well. Specifically, it has been suggested that the perirhinal cortex supports the perceptual abilities needed to accomplish visual discrimination performance when the stimuli have complex features and overlapping elements. However, the tasks that have been studied are quite challenging. Stimulus features must be held in working memory while attention shifts among the several parts of the display. When working mem

Animal models are useful in elucidating the neural basis of age-related impairments in cognition. Burke, Wallace, Nematollahi, Uprety, and Barnes (2010) tested young and aged rats in several different protocols to measure object recognition memory and found that object recognition deficits in aged rats were consistent with these rats behaving as if novel objects were familiar, rather than familiar objects being treated as novel (that is, forgotten). A similar pattern of behavior has been observed in young rats with perirhinal cortex lesions. Moreover, age-related impairments in object recognit

Tract-tracing studies in primates indicate that different subregions of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) are connected with multiple brain regions. However, no clear framework defining the distributed anatomy associated with the human MTL exists. This gap in knowledge originates in notoriously low MRI data quality in the anterior human MTL and in group-level blurring of idiosyncratic anatomy between adjacent brain regions, such as entorhinal and perirhinal cortices, and parahippocampal areas TH/TF. Using MRI, we intensively scanned four human individuals and collected whole-brain data with unpre

Epilepsies affecting the limbic regions are common and generate seizures often resistant to pharmacological treatment. Clinical evidence demonstrates that diverse regions of the mesial portion of the temporal lobe participate in limbic seizures; these include the hippocampus, the entorhinal, perirhinal and parahippocampal regions and the piriform cortex. The network mechanisms involved in the generation of olfactory-limbic epileptiform patterns will be here examined, with particular emphasis on acute interictal and ictal epileptiform discharges obtained by treatment with pro-convulsive drugs a

In epilepsy research, studies have been made to identify brain areas critical for triggering and/or controlling propagated seizure activity. The purpose of the present study was to focus on a similar approach in nerve agent research by reviewing relevant literature to map potential trigger sites and propagation pathways for seizures. The piriform cortex and medial septal area emerge as prime target areas for soman-induced seizures. The cholinergic hyperactivation in the latter structures seems to induce increased glutamatergic activity in the piriform, entorhinal, and perirhinal cortices along

UNLABELLED: Growing evidence suggests that emotion shapes temporal aspects of memory-such as remembering when an event occurred-yet the neural bases of these effects remain unclear. Prior work indicates that temporal-context representations in memory are supported by the function of medial temporal lobe (MTL) and prefrontal regions with privileged access to amygdala-originated affective signals, which may mediate emotional influences on temporal memory-including hippocampus, perirhinal cortex, and lateral frontopolar cortex (FPl). To test whether these candidate pathways shape temporal memory

A central assumption of neuroscience is that long-term memories are represented by the same brain areas that encode sensory stimuli1. Neurons in inferotemporal (IT) cortex represent the sensory percept of visual objects using a distributed axis code2-4. Whether and how the same IT neural population represents the long-term memory of visual objects remains unclear. Here we examined how familiar faces are encoded in the IT anterior medial face patch (AM), perirhinal face patch (PR) and temporal pole face patch (TP). In AM and PR we observed that the encoding axis for familiar faces is rotated re

Behavioral data indicate that three of the areas which form the parahippocampal region in the rat, i.e., the entorhinal, perirhinal, and postrhinal cortices, have different, although related functions that also differ from those of the hippocampal formation. These functional differences might be related to differences in connectivity, on the one hand with parts of the association cortex, and on the other with the hippocampal formation. In a previous study, we showed the existence of both a direct and an indirect projection from the perirhinal cortex to areas CA1 and subiculum of the hippocampu

Mnemonic similarity task performance, in which a known target stimulus must be distinguished from similar lures, is supported by the hippocampus and perirhinal cortex. Impairments on this task are known to manifest with advancing age. Interestingly, disrupting hippocampal activity leads to mnemonic discrimination impairments when lures are novel, but not when they are familiar. This observation suggests that other brain structures support discrimination abilities as stimuli are learned. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is critical for retrieval of remote events and executive functions, such as work

Imaging studies using symptom-provocation paradigms in specific phobia have yielded contradictory results, possibly reflecting a failure to account for habituation processes. Given that a single session of exposure in vivo can result in significant improvement in specific phobia, we used prolonged exposure to phobic stimuli to identify CNS regions showing habituation. Eighteen subjects (12 with spider phobia, 6 healthy controls) underwent H(2)(15)O-positron emission tomography while being continuously presented with pictures of spiders or butterflies. Results showed main effects (spiders>butte

In this issue of Neuron, Bonnen et al. (2021) use artificial neural networks to resolve a long-standing controversy surrounding the neurocognitive dichotomy between memory and perception. They show that the perirhinal cortex supports performance on tasks that cannot be solved by the ventral visual stream.

Neuronal oscillations and population waves (OWs) may be important for the maturation of neural circuits in the cortex and other developing areas of the CNS. We examined endogenous network activity by whole-cell and paired extracellular recordings in the thalamorecipient auditory cortex (ACx) in slices of gerbil pups during the first three postnatal weeks. Separately, we examined network ensemble correlates of the OWs using population intracellular free calcium (Ca2+) imaging in slices bulk-loaded with fura-2 AM. In slices devoid of physiological or pharmacological manipulations, spontaneous mu

Neocortical areas comprised of multiple neuronal circuits which are encoded with innumerable advanced cognitive tasks. Studies focused on neuronal network and synaptic plasticity has hypothesized that every specific neuron and the circuit process the explicit essential information for the specific tasks. However, the structure of these circuits and the involved critical neurons remain to be elucidated. Considering our previous studies, showing the specificity of rat postrhinal cortex comprising specific neuronal circuit for encoding both the learning and recall of shape discrimination through

Pharmacological control of seizure activity following nerve agent exposure is critical in reducing neuropathology and improving survival in casualties. Three classes of drugs, anticholinergics, benzodiazepines and excitatory amino acid (EAA) antagonists, have been shown to be effective at moderating nerve agent-induced seizures. However, little is known about which brain structures are involved in producing the anticonvulsant response. This study evaluated drugs from each class, injected directly into one of three specific brain structures, the perirhinal cortex, the entorhinal cortex, or the

Layer II neurons of the entorhinal cortex project to the dentate gyrus and field CA3 and also send collaterals to the subiculum; layer III neurons project to the subiculum and field CA1, but not to the dentate gyrus; and layer IV neurons project to the perirhinal cortex. We have previously shown that these specific differences between the projections of the layer II and III neurons are maintained and can regenerate in organotypic slice culture. In the present experiments we have confronted Postnatal Day 7 (P7) rat entorhinal cortex with P7 tissue selected from restricted parts of the overall e

The perirhinal cortex (PER) and postrhinal cortex (POR) in the medial temporal lobe are commonly described as two distinct systems that process nonspatial and spatial information, respectively. Recent findings suggest that the two regions exhibit functional overlap when processing stimulus information, especially when associative responses are required in goal-directed behavior. However, we lack the neural correlates of this. In the current study, we recorded spiking activities for single units of the PER and POR as rats were required to choose a response associated with the identity of a visu

The cortical connections of the human hippocampal memory system are fundamental to understanding its operation in health and disease, especially in the context of the great development of the human cortex. The functional connectivity of the human hippocampal system was analyzed in 172 participants imaged at 7T in the Human Connectome Project. The human hippocampus has high functional connectivity not only with the entorhinal cortex, but also with areas that are more distant in the ventral 'what' stream including the perirhinal cortex and temporal cortical visual areas. Parahippocampal gyrus TF

Alzheimer's disease (AD) progresses insidiously from the preclinical stage to dementia. While people with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) have normal cognitive performance, some may be in the preclinical stage of AD. Neurofibrillary tangles appear first in the transentorhinal cortex, followed by the entorhinal cortex in the clinically silent stage of AD. We expected the earliest changes in subjects with SCD to occur in medial temporal subfields other than the hippocampal proper. These selective structural changes would affect specific memory subcomponents. We used the Family Picture subtest
