PURPOSE: To characterize and investigate PET/CT findings in the omentum in the differentiation of tuberculous peritonitis (TBP) and peritoneal carcinoma (PC).
METHODS: Thirty-nine patients with TBP and 113 patients with PC who underwent PET/CT were retrospectively enrolled. The omental uptake intensity, distribution characteristics, contracture, size and boundary of soft-tissue lesions, and CT patterns were reviewed.
RESULTS: Absent and focal FDG uptake in the lesser omentum was more common in the PC patients (P = 0.034 and P = 0.017, respectively), and diffuse FDG uptake in the lesser oment

Laparoscopy with peritoneal biopsy is a tool for rapid and accurate diagnosis of tuberculous peritonitis (TBP). However, laparoscopic procedures are not risk-free; complications include injuries to the gastrointestinal tract and major blood vessels. The purpose of the present study was to introduce a novel method for safe and straightforward laparoscopic diagnosis of TBP. A case series of 12 patients with TBP diagnosed between October 2012 and November 2013 at our hospital is presented. The patients underwent a novel method of laparoscopy involving the use of a central venous catheter (CVC). T

BACKGROUND: Interval appendectomy is widely recommended for patients with abscesses due to perforated appendicitis. A concomitant malignancy-related problem was reported after conservative treatment of acute appendicitis with abscess, but perforated appendicitis-associated tuberculous peritonitis was never reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old male patient with a laryngeal cancer history presented to our hospital with an acute appendicitis-associated ileal abscess. He was scheduled for an interval appendectomy after conservative treatment. Fortunately, the symptoms subsided, and the pati

Background: Tuberculous peritonitis (TP) is a common form of abdominal tuberculosis (TB). Diagnosing TP remains challenging in clinical practice. The aim of the present meta-analysis was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of peripheral blood (PB) T-SPOT and peritoneal fluid (PF) T-SPOT for diagnosing TP. Methods: PubMed, EmBase, Cochrane, Scopus, Google scholar, China national knowledge internet, and Wan-Fang databases were searched for relevant articles from August 1, 2005 to July 5, 2020. Statistical analysis was performed using Stata, Revman, and Meta-Disc software. Diagnostic parameters i

BACKGROUND/AIM: Our study aimed to investigate a reliable diagnostic approach for tuberculous peritonitis (TBP) by comparing the commonly used diagnostic tools.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-one patients had received a series of diagnoses, including laparoscopy, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), cancer antigen 125 (CA125), tuberculin skin test, tuberculosis antibody in serum (TB-Ab), the T-SPOT.TB test, or adenosine deaminase (ADA) in ascitic fluid. The positive rate of each method was calculated and the differences of positive rates between laparoscopy and laboratory tests that had higher

An unusual case of miliary plastic peritonitis associated with midgut malrotation in an adolescent in whom various diagnostic investigations, medical management and staged initial laparoscopic diagnostic followed by therapeutic procedure was curative have been presented. Tuberculous miliary plastic peritonitis causes dense adhesions between bowel loops and prevents midgut volvulus in a pre-existing malrotation. Diagnosis can be a challenge and threshold for diagnostic laparoscopy should be low. Interval correction of malrotation by laparoscopy after complete resolution of tuberculosis is easy,

We clinico-statistically studied 8 patients (0.77%) with tuberculous peritonitis (3 cases) and tuberculous endometritis (5 cases) aged 50 or older who visited our gynecological clinic for 6 years from July, 1986 to June, 1992 in Tokyo Metropolitan Tama Geriatric Hospital. The mean age was 72 years with a range of 52 to 82 years. Five cases with tuberculous endometritis were diagnosed based on the findings of endometrial cytology and bacteriology, and the incidence was 0.93% of 535 cases in which the uterine cavity could be examined. Three cases with tuberculous peritonitis were strongly suspec

The information on the limitations of laparoscopy (LP), particularly in the diagnosis of fibroadhesive form of tuberculous peritonitis (TP) is insufficient. Some reports suggested the risk and insufficient information obtained from LP in the diagnosis of fibroadhesive tuberculous peritonitis (FTP). The objectives of this study were to determine the usefulness and limitations of LP in the diagnosis of FTP and ascitic TP. The clinical and laparoscopic features of 64 patients with TP were analyzed. FTP was observed in 44 patients (68.8%) comprising 14 cases with small tubercles with thin fibrous

Tuberculous peritonitis and tuberculous endometritis are extremely rare entities in the Western world. In this article, we discuss a rare case of a 40-year-old Nigerian female presenting with abdominal pain, distension and secondary amenorrhea, and show that a high clinical suspicion combined with minimally invasive procedures can help physicians make the diagnosis, avoid extensive surgery, and rapidly initiate appropriate therapy.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to develop and validate a nomogram for diagnosing tuberculous peritoneal effusion (TPE).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective, single-center study. We collected data on basic characteristics, laboratory tests, and clinical information from consecutive patients with TPE and non-tuberculous peritoneal effusion (non-TPE) using an electronic medical record database. The data were randomly divided into a training group and a validation group at a 7:3 ratio. Variables were selected using LASSO regression, and a predictive model was established using mult

A 49-year-old man was admitted with peritonitis nine months after starting continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) for kidney failure. Ceftazidime and cefazolin were started. Peritoneal dialysate culture was negative for bacteria, but antibiotic treatment was continued because peritonitis improved. Twenty days later, the patient was discharged with no signs of peritonitis. However, 40-day culture of the original peritoneal dialysate detected Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and peritonitis recurred, leading to readmission. A T-SPOT test was performed and was positive in 4 days. Anti-tuberc

Most infections related to peritoneal dialysis (PD) are caused by common bacteria, and non-tuberculous mycobacteria are rare. The clinical characteristics and prognosis of PD patients with non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections were investigated at our hospital. Non-tuberculous mycobacteria were detected in 11 patients (exit-site infection, tunnel infection, and peritonitis in 3, 5, and 3 patients, respectively). Mycobacterium fortuitum, Mycobacterium chelonae, and Mycobacterium abscessus were identified in 4, 2, and 2 patients, respectively. Most patients with peritonitis or tunnel infectio

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) related peritonitis is a common cause for PD technique failure. In up to 20% of cases conventional cultures are negative, and nontuberculous mycobacteria are rarely identified as a cause. A 60-year-old man treated with peritoneal dialysis as kidney replacement therapy presented to care with two months of malaise, abdominal pain, and cloudy PD effluent. Effluent analysis demonstrated a marked neutrophil-predominant pleocytosis, but no organisms were identified on Gram stain or on initial cultures after 72 hours of incubation. He was admitted to the hospital and intraper

A 77-year-old woman with a diagnosis of transverse colon cance(r cT2N0M0, cStage Ⅰ), who presented with significant weight loss, underwent a planned laparoscopic colectomy. Intraoperative findings revealed multiple small white nodules suggestive of peritoneal dissemination. Due to the absence of a pathologist, rapid intraoperative pathology could not be performed, and only a biopsy of the peritoneal nodules was obtained. Subsequent pathological examination identified granulomatous tissue with caseous necrosis, leading to a diagnosis of tuberculous peritonitis. Standard 4-drug anti-tuberculosis

A 10-year-old boy on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis had low-grade fever, pain and tenderness of the right shoulder; he had no history of infection or exposure to tuberculosis. The underlying granulomatous infection was diagnosed by histological examination of bone and the polymerase chain reaction with primer sequences specific for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Special stains and cultures were negative. The initiation of antituberculous therapy was followed by a sharp improvement in the fever, malaise and shoulder pain within several weeks. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis is common in pat

BACKGROUND: The number of cases of tuberculosis as a complication in people with immunodeficiency, people on immunosuppressive therapy and among the immigrant population is increasing in Germany. However, tuberculous peritonitis rarely occurs without these risks, particularly in Germans. The incidence of tuberculous peritonitis in Germany is very low; tuberculosis of the intestinal tract was found in approximately 0.8 % of tuberculosis cases in 2004. The diagnosis of tuberculous peritonitis is often delayed on account of non-specific clinical symptoms. The absence of specific biological marker

Tuberculous peritonitis, though rare, is a serious condition and its diagnosis is challenging due to nonspecific clinical symptoms and imaging findings. Likewise, tuberculous epididymo-orchitis is a clinical dilemma, as it often mimics testicular tumors. We report a case of a 62-year-old patient diagnosed to have TB peritonitis, following tuberculous epididymo-orchitis with review of the imaging features of both entities. A high index of suspicion and careful clinical assessment will help in early diagnosis and treatment of TB peritonitis, preventing potential complications. Moreover, testicul
