Progress and perspectives on pore-scale flow in methane hydrate reservoirs: Microfluidic and numerical strategies for synergistic CH4 recovery and CO2 sequestration.

Natural gas hydrates, widely distributed in marine and permafrost regions, present a dual-function energy resource combining methane extraction with carbon dioxide sequestration, offering a promising pathway toward clean energy production and climate mitigation. However, the complexity of multiphase flow mechanisms within hydrate-bearing reservoirs presents critical challenges to achieving efficient and stable gas recovery and sequestration. This review examines the pivotal role of pore-scale modeling and microfluidic experiments as essential tools for understanding fluid behaviors and interfa

Inland water greenhouse gas emissions offset the terrestrial carbon sink in the northern cryosphere.

Climate-sensitive northern cryosphere inland waters emit greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere, yet their total emissions remain poorly constrained. We present a data-driven synthesis of GHG emissions from northern cryosphere inland waters considering water body types, cryosphere zones, and seasonality. We find that annual GHG emissions are dominated by carbon dioxide ([Formula: see text] teragrams of CO2; [Formula: see text]) and methane ([Formula: see text] teragrams of CH4), while the nitrous oxide emission ([Formula: see text] gigagrams of N2O) is minor. The annual CO2-equivalent (CO

Nitrogen Redox Controls on Greenhouse Gas Production in Yedoma Taliks.

Large carbon and nitrogen pools are disproportionately concentrated in the icy, Pleistocene-aged silt deposits of Arctic Yedoma permafrost. Upon thaw, these undergo microbial mineralization, releasing greenhouse gases (GHGs) including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O). Here, we present combined geochemical data with microbial function and community dynamics from deep (7-m) talik soil boreholes in water-unsaturated yedoma upland in interior Alaska. Our results reveal significant in situ seasonal shifts in microbial function, community composition, and diversity throug

One health in the Arctic - connections and actions.

There is growing awareness and recognition of the importance of the One Health paradigm to address existing environmental threats and recognise emerging ones at an early stage among Arctic residents, public health agencies, and wildlife resource managers. The One Health approach, emphasising the interconnectedness of human, animal, and ecosystem health, plays a pivotal role in addressing these multifaceted issues. Warming climate and permafrost thaw may influence both contaminant exposure and the spread of zoonotic infectious diseases and have impacts on water and food security. Migration from

Chemical and physical microenvironments at the Viking landing sites.

Physical and chemical considerations permit the division of the near-surface regolith on Mars into at least six zones of distinct microenvironments. The zones are euphotic, duricrust/peds, tempofrost, permafrost, endolithic, and interfacial/transitional. Microenvironments vary significantly in temperature extremes, mean temperature, salt content, relative pressure of water vapor, UV and visible light irradiance, and exposure to ionizing radiation events (100 Mrad) and oxidative molecular species. From what is known of the chemistry of the atmosphere and regolith fines (soil), limits upon the a

Niche specialization and prevalence of comammox Nitrospira in the alkaline sediments of thermokarst lakes on the Tibetan Plateau.

Complete ammonia-oxidizing (comammox) Nitrospira are recognized as key players in the nitrogen cycle, yet their ecological roles in extreme environments remain poorly understood. Here, we show that comammox Nitrospira occupy distinct ecological niches in Tibetan Plateau thermokarst lakes (pH 7.5-10.2) using stable isotope probing, metagenomics, and metatranscriptomics. While gross nitrification rates are significantly higher in subalkaline lakes due to the active presence of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB), these canonical nitrifiers are inhibited under elevated pH. In contr

Ice Converts Phenols into Persistent Mineral-Bound Polymers.

Freezing fundamentally alters how minerals transform dissolved phenols in cold environments. As water freezes, solutes are excluded from the crystal lattice and concentrated into microscopic pockets of unfrozen liquid, creating reaction conditions far more extreme than those of bulk solution. Here, we compare catechol oxidation on a key soil manganese oxide under freeze-thaw versus room-temperature conditions. Freezing redirects products from soluble humic-like substances to thermally stable, mineral-bound polymers. Freeze-thaw conditions removed over 50% of dissolved organic carbon within 24

Significant sunlight-driven methane production at the wetland sediment-water interface.

Anthropogenic and natural wetlands are key contributors to global emissions of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas influencing Earth's climate. Wetland CH4 emissions are typically attributed to anaerobic microbial respiration; however, biotic sources alone do not account for the full extent of CH4 emissions observed in wetlands, leaving a substantial gap in understanding wetland CH4 emission sources. Here, we reveal that abiotic sunlight-driven processes efficiently drive CH4 production in wetlands with shallow water table. This is facilitated by rapid photochemical reactive oxygen species

Dynamic soil columns simulate Arctic redox biogeochemistry and carbon release during changes in water saturation.

Thawing Arctic permafrost can induce hydrologic change and alter redox conditions, shifting the balance of soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition. There remains uncertainty about how soil saturation and redox transitions impact dissolved and gas phase carbon fluxes, and efforts to link hydrobiogeochemical processes to ecosystem-scale models are limited. This study evaluates SOM decomposition of Arctic tundra soils using column experiments, water chemistry measurements, microbial community analysis, and a PFLOTRAN reactive transport model. Soil columns from a thermokarst channel (TC) and an up

Study on the Influence of Temperature and Water Content on the Static Mechanical Properties of Sandstone.

The area of permafrost worldwide accounts for approximately 20% to 25% of land area. In cold-climate regions of China, which are garnering international attention, the study of low-temperature and moisture effects on rock mass mechanical properties is of significant importance. China has a wide area of cold regions. This research can provide a foundation for China's exploration activities in such extreme environments. This paper examines the mechanical behavior of rock specimens subjected to various low temperatures and water contents through uniaxial compression tests. The analysis encompasse

Megafaunal extinctions and the disappearance of a specialized wolf ecomorph.

The gray wolf (Canis lupus) is one of the few large predators to survive the Late Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions [1]. Nevertheless, wolves disappeared from northern North America in the Late Pleistocene, suggesting they were affected by factors that eliminated other species. Using skeletal material collected from Pleistocene permafrost deposits of eastern Beringia, we present a comprehensive analysis of an extinct vertebrate by exploring genetic (mtDNA), morphologic, and isotopic (delta(13)C, delta(15)N) data to reveal the evolutionary relationships, as well as diet and feeding behavior, o

Risk factors and spatio-temporal patterns of livestock anthrax in Khuvsgul Province, Mongolia.

Anthrax is a worldwide zoonotic disease. Anthrax has long been a public health and socio-economic issue in Mongolia. Presently, there is no spatial information on carcass burial sites as a potential hazard of future anthrax outbreaks and possible risk factors associated with anthrax occurrences in Mongolia. Here, we analyze retrospective data (1986-2015) on the disposal sites of livestock carcasses to describe historical spatio-temporal patterns of livestock anthrax in Khuvsgul Province, which showed the highest anthrax incidence rate in Mongolia. From the results of spatial mean and standard

Climate-driven local amplifications of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon in the Arctic Ocean amid basin-scale stability.

The Arctic is undergoing accelerated warming and widespread permafrost thaw, processes expected to enhance the export of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to the ocean. Yet whether climate change has altered the magnitude, distribution, and transport pathways of terrestrial DOC across the Arctic Ocean remains poorly constrained by basin-scale observations. Here we combine optical proxies with satellite remote sensing to track the spatiotemporal dynamics of terrestrial DOC across the Arctic since the early 21st century. We find that terrestrial DOC is not confined to river plumes or ad

Secondary metabolites of the genus Penicillium from undisturbed and anthropogenically altered Antarctic habitats.

From undisturbed Antarctic habitats (permafrost sediments 30-150 thousand years of age, water of Radok Lake) and superficial deposits contaminated with petroleum products, we isolated 14 and 9 strains of Penicillium fungi, respectively. Comparison of the fungal complexes showed them to differ by species composition; only two species-P. palitans and P. solitum-were in the species lists of both groups. The identified secondary metabolites in the investigated strains belonged to diketopiperazine (group of roquefortines, rugulosuvin B), benzodiazepine (anacin, cyclopenins), quinoline alkaloids (vi

Climate-change-driven deterioration of water quality in a mineralized watershed.

A unique 30-year streamwater chemistry data set from a mineralized alpine watershed with naturally acidic, metal-rich water displays dissolved concentrations of Zn and other metals of ecological concern increasing by 100-400% (400-2000 μg/L) during low-flow months, when metal concentrations are highest. SO(4) and other major ions show similar increases. A lack of natural or anthropogenic land disturbances in the watershed during the study period suggests that climate change is the underlying cause. Local mean annual and mean summer air temperatures have increased at a rate of 0.2-1.2 °C/decade

Isolation of a Cohort of Giant Viruses From Above the Arctic Circle in Northern Norway.

Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on Earth. Metagenomic data indicates a higher viral abundance of viruses of unicellular eukaryotes in the polar regions, information still not matched by broad isolation efforts using samples collected in these regions. Here we describe a prospection effort using diverse samples collected above the Arctic circle, including freshwater and marine samples from urban areas, deep-sea hydrothermal vents and sea ice samples from the Nansen Basin. We isolated 10 giant viruses capable of infecting Acanthamoeba spp., five representing the Marseillevirida

Rethinking structural safety for a volatile century.

Most structural design frameworks remain rooted in outdated assumptions: that hazards occur in isolation, materials do not degrade, and failure can be prevented through overdesign. In an era marked by accelerating climate volatility, cascading disasters, and mounting carbon constraints, such logic is increasingly untenable. From earthquake-flood sequences to heat-induced corrosion and permafrost collapse, modern infrastructure faces compound and evolving risks that current codes fail to anticipate. At the same time, conventional approaches often achieve safety through carbon-intensive construc

Heterogeneous Wettability Alters Methane Migration and Leakage in Shallow Aquifers.

Capillary heterogeneity is increasingly recognized as a first-order control of gas plume migration and trapping in aquifers and storage formations. We show that spatial variability in the water-methane contact angle, set by mineralogy and salinity, reshapes capillary entry pressures and, in turn, migration pathways. Using molecular dynamics simulation, we estimate contact angles on quartz and kaolinite under fresh and saline conditions and embed these results in continuum-scale multiphase flow simulations via a contact-angle-informed Leverett J-function, mapping wettability directly onto the f

One Step Closer to Enigmatic USCα Methanotrophs: Isolation of a Methylocapsa-like Bacterium from a Subarctic Soil.

The scavenging of atmospheric trace gases has been recognized as one of the lifestyle-defining capabilities of microorganisms in terrestrial polar ecosystems. Several metagenome-assembled genomes of as-yet-uncultivated methanotrophic bacteria, which consume atmospheric CH4 in these ecosystems, have been retrieved in cultivation-independent studies. In this study, we isolated and characterized a representative of these methanotrophs, strain D3K7, from a subarctic soil of northern Russia. Strain D3K7 grows on methane and methanol in a wide range of temperatures, between 5 and 30 °C. Weak growth

Perspective: Dimensions of Environment and Health in Arctic Communities.

In the Arctic, environment and health are linked in myriad ways. A key emphasis has been on numerous long-lived contaminants in traditional foods, particularly marine mammals, and their well-documented impacts on human, animal and environmental health ("One health approach"). More recent concerns for Indigenous communities focus on the (side) effects of the switch to a modern, processed diet, which is accompanied by a loss of tradition and emerging health impacts. Furthermore, the availability of traditional foods is increasingly threatened by the impacts of climate change, which also causes t
