The efficacy and duration of passive immunity protection depend on maternal antibody levels and transfer efficiency. We investigated whether oral vaccination of Peromyscus leucopus dams with recombinant outer surface protein A (OspA)-expressing Escherichia coli could induce maternal transfer of anti-OspA antibodies and protect pups from Borrelia burgdorferi challenge. Dams were vaccinated until breeding pairs were created (i), until parturition (ii), and until pups were 2 weeks old (iii). Pups were challenged with nymphal Ixodes scapularis-transmitted B. burgdorferi at ~4 weeks of age. Anti-Os

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a prevalent and debilitating condition, characterized by intrusive thoughts and repetitive behavior. Animal models of OCD arguably have the potential to contribute to our understanding of the condition. Deer mice (Permomyscus maniculatus bairdii) are characterized by stereotypic behavior which is reminiscent of OCD symptomology, and which may serve as a naturalistic animal model of this disorder. Moreover, a range of deer mouse repetitive behaviors may be representative of different compulsive-like phenotypes. This paper will review work on deer mouse beh

Although effects of motherhood on mothers have been well documented in mammals, the effects of fatherhood on fathers are not well known. We evaluated effects of being a father on key metabolic and performance measures in the California mouse, Peromyscus californicus. California mice are genetically monogamous in the wild, and fathers show similar parental behavior to mothers, with the exception of lactation. To investigate the impact of fatherhood on fathers, focal males were paired with an intact female (breeding males), a tubally ligated female (nonbreeding males), or another male (virgins).

The Perdido Key beach mouse (Peromyscus polionotus trissyllepsis) is a critically endangered subspecies of the oldfield mouse. The captive population, currently maintained by 3 Florida zoos, is entirely derived from just 3 wild-caught ancestor mice. Necropsy and histopathology revealed chordoma of the vertebral column in 38 of 88 (43%) mice. The tumors were locally expansile and invasive masses of large physaliferous (vacuolated) cells with small, round, hyperchromatic nuclei, similar to the "classic" form of chordomas described in humans. Primary tumors rarely contained small amounts of bone

UNLABELLED: The rodent Peromyscus leucopus is a major natural reservoir for the Lyme disease agent Borrelia burgdorferi and a host for its vector Ixodes scapularis. At various locations in northeastern United States 10 to 15 B. burgdorferi strains coexist at different prevalences in tick populations. We asked whether representative strains of high or low prevalence differed in their infections of P. leucopus. After 5 weeks of experimental infection of groups with each of 6 isolates, distributions and burdens of bacteria in tissues were measured by quantitative PCR, and antibodies to B. burgdor

We determined if the ear biopsy location affected detection of Borrelia burgdorferi when either culture or the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used among 50 white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus), live-captured in a Lyme disease enzootic area in Maryland (USA) between March and October of 1991 and 1992. The infection status of individual mice was determined by organ culture; ear biopsy samples were obtained from the peripheral and central part of the ear for detection of B. burgdorferi by culture and by PCR. Overall, B. burgdorferi was cultured from one or more tissue samples in 33 (66%)

Livers from 4,501 deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) collected from a weedy habitat in northeastern California during 48 consecutive monthly samplings were examined microscopically for Taenia taeniaeformis larva. Although there were pronounced seasonal fluctuations in host density, there were no significant annual or season-related differences in cestode intensities in adult deer mice. There were no significant differences in prevalences associated with sex of the host, nor were there significant changes in level of reproduction noted between infected and non-infected hosts. There were, howeve

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric illness that significantly impacts affected patients and available treatments yield suboptimal therapeutic response. Recently, the role of the gut-brain axis (GBA) in psychiatric illness has emerged as a potential target for therapeutic exploration. However, studies concerning the role of the GBA in OCD are limited. To investigate whether a naturally occurring obsessive-compulsive-like phenotype in a rodent model, that is large nest building in deer mice, is associated with perturbations in the gut microbiome, we investigated and characteris

Recombinant outer surface protein A (OspA) vaccination of wild animal reservoirs has potential application for reducing Borrelia burgdorferi transmission in nature and subsequent risk of human infection. As a major reservoir host, the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) is a candidate for a vaccination program designed to reduce infection prevalence in vector ticks. In this study we characterized the effect of various levels of immunization with recombinant OspA-glutathione transferase fusion protein on transmission dynamics from infected P. leucopus to larval ticks. Control mice were vac

Investigating the motivational triggers underlying naturalistic compulsive-like behavior is generally regarded as challenging. To this extent, the current study aimed to establish a proof-of-concept for future investigation by probing unconditioned and naturalistic operant responses aimed at obtaining nesting material by normal (NNB) and large (LNB) nest building deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii). LNB mice and NNB controls were individually placed in cages equipped with a lever-operated nesting material (cotton rope) dispenser and allowed to become accustomed to the response (lever pr

A former local source of PCBs has contaminated soil and the terrestrial food web at Saglek, Labrador. The relationship between PCB exposure and bone mineral density as an osteoporosis biomarker in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) was investigated at two sites at Saglek: a contaminated Beach and a reference area. Bone mineral density was measured on the femur of twenty-six deer mice using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) technology. Bone mineral density was significantly lower in deer mice from the high exposure site (average whole body summation operatorPCB=5769 ng/g wet weight, n=20)

Although seasonal changes in brain morphology and function are well established in songbirds, seasonal plasticity of brain structure and function remain less well documented in mammals. Nontropical animals display many adaptations to reduce energy use to survive winter, including cessation of reproductive activities. Because of the high energetic costs of brain tissue, we hypothesized that male white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) would reduce brain size in response to short days as well as regress their reproductive systems. Because short days may decrease hippocampal volume and impair spa

The results of light and electron microscopic studies demonstrated that Trypanosoma brucei infection produced marked testicular degeneration in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) with highly significant (p less than 0.001) decreases in testicular weight, seminiferous tubular diameter, and epithelial thickness. Lesions in seminiferous tubules consisted of necrosis of spermatids, spermatocytes, and sometimes the spermatogonia. Sertoli's cells had marked vacuolation and accumulation of phagocytic material. Orchitis was present in most infected mice, particularly those with severe seminiferous tub

UNLABELLED: X-chromosome inactivation (XCI) equalizes X-linked gene dosage between XX females and XY males in eutherian mammals and is canonically initiated by the long noncoding RNA Xist , which coats one X chromosome and recruits Polycomb-mediated chromatin silencing. Xist expression has therefore been considered female-specific and central to balancing gene dosage between two X chromosomes in females and a single X chromosome in males. However, emerging evidence suggests that Xist can also be expressed in male cells in both healthy and pathogenic contexts, raising fundamental questions abou

Nestling white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) are born in the earliest days of spring in cold climates. If the nestlings are by accident exposed to ambient temperatures near freezing (0-7 °C) at early ages (2-10 days old), they may experience body temperatures (Tbs) equally low. During such hypothermia, although their heart keeps beating, they become apneic (cease inhaling and exhaling). However, they have an exceptional ability (e.g., compared to Mus musculus) to tolerate these conditions for at least several hours, after which they revive if rewarmed by parents. This paper addresses the p

The white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) is an important reservoir host for Borrelia burgdorferi, the pathogen responsible for Lyme disease, and its distribution is expanding northward. We used an Ecological Niche Factor Analysis to identify the climatic factors associated with the distribution shift of the white-footed mouse over the last 30 years at the northern edge of its range, and modeled its current and potential future (2050) distributions using the platform BIOMOD. A mild and shorter winter is favouring the northern expansion of the white-footed mouse in Québec. With more favorabl

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) prevalent in many household items. Rodent models and human epidemiological studies have linked this chemical to neurobehavior impairments. In California mice, developmental exposure to BPA results in sociosexual disorders at adulthood, including communication and biparental care deficits, behaviors that are primarily regulated by the hypothalamus. Thus, we sought to examine the transcriptomic profile in this brain region of juvenile male and female California mice offspring exposed from periconception through lactation to BPA or ethin

Trypanosoma brucei EATRO 110 infection of the deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) produced moderate to marked lesions in the spleen, liver, heart, and kidney seven to ten weeks after infection. Splenic lesions consisted of marked splenomegaly, with infected spleens weighing 25.9 times control spleens. Transmission electron microscopy of the sinuses and Billroth's cords of the splenic red pulp demonstrated an increased cellularity with greater contact between cells due partly to proliferation of macrophages, transformed lymphocytes and plasma cells and partly to accelerated erythropoiesis with i

Glycogen level in and size of pinealocytes of the feral, white-footed mouse Peromyscus leucopus, were studied by a semiquantitative histochemical method to determine whether seasonal changes exist in them under natural conditions, what temporal pattern they exhibit, and whether 24-hour changes in these parameters exist in different seasons, as shown in the laboratory dd-mice. Marked seasonal changes were seen in both glycogen levels and nuclear densities (ANOVA p less than 0.005). The size of pinealocytes at 09:00 to 10:00 showed one peak (and nadir) seasonal change, with the smallest size in
