Common peroneal nerve dysfunction after a multiligament knee injury can be devastating. In patients with persistent foot drop, posterior tibial tendon transfer to the dorsum of the foot is a reliable and safe procedure to restore dorsiflexion. These authors favor passing the posterior tibial tendon through the interosseous membrane and docking it into the lateral/middle cuneiforms. A Strayer procedure or tendo-Achilles lengthening must be performed in patients unable to achieve at least 10° of passive dorsiflexion. Despite the operative limb having 30% to 40% of ankle dorsiflexion strength of

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the thread release technique can be applied to common peroneal nerve entrapment at the fibular neck.
METHODS: The thread common peroneal nerve release was performed on 15 fresh frozen cadaveric lower extremity specimens. All procedures were performed under ultrasound guidance and immediately underwent post-procedural gross anatomic inspection for completeness of decompression and presence or absence of iatrogenic neurovascular injury.
RESULTS: All 15 specimens demonstrated complete transection of the deep fascia of the peroneus longus overlying the common peroneal

OBJECTIVE: Peroneal nerve entrapment neuropathy (PEN) is generally known as a drop foot with sensory disturbance. However, some patients experience numbness and pain in the affected area without severe paresis due to PEN. We report the clinical features and our surgical results of PEN cases.
METHODS: We encountered 17 cases of PEN. The patients were 7 females and 10 males and their ages ranged from 30 to 78 years(average 56.1 years). In these cases, conservative therapy was unsuccessful;therefore, we performed surgical treatment for PEN.
RESULTS: Among the 17 cases, 4 were of bilateral and 1

INTRODUCTION: Common peroneal nerve palsy is the commonest lower extremity peripheral paresis. The foot drop and inability or difficulty to move the ankle and toes dorsally and inability to perform foot pronation is a debilitating condition for the patient. Tendon transfer is a treatment option often used to restore the foot function after the peroneal palsy in cases when reinervation is not clinically satisfactory.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group included 14 patients treated in the Trauma department of FNO either for common or deep peroneal nerve paresis, or for isolated lesion of the

OBJECT: This study analyzes 84 cases of peroneal nerve injuries associated with sports-related knee injuries and their surgical outcome and management.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed the cases of peroneal nerve injury associated with sports between the years 1970 and 2010. Each patient was evaluated for injury mechanism, preoperative neurological status, electrophysiological studies, lesion type, and operative technique (neurolysis and graft repair). Preoperative status of injury was evaluated by using a grading system published by the senior authors. All lesions in continuity

Peroneal nerve palsy has been reported in association with traumatic and nontraumatic causes. We encountered a 75-year-old man whose peroneal nerve palsy developed suddenly following varus deformity of the arthritic knee. A review of the literature found 1 other report describing a progressive peroneal nerve palsy associated with a varus deformity of the knee due to arthritis. Our patient had progressive intractable knee pain; 3-compartment, severe degenerative changes in the knees; varus knee malalignment and laxity; right peroneal nerve palsy; and decreased sensation to light touch and pinpr

BACKGROUND: Lower limb injuries and ankle sprain occur frequently among football players, due to the high incidence of physical contact. As a result, lower limb nerves are subject to injury. This project aims to evaluate the lower limb nerve conduction among students playing football to investigate the probable relationship between ankle sprain in football and nerve conductivity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty volunteer students aged between 19 and 25 were studied. They fell into three groups; one comprising of 20 healthy football players whose football experience exceeded three years, the seco

BACKGROUND: To assess incidence, etiology, and clinical relevance of common peroneal nerve injury (CPNI) in patients after cardiothoracic surgery.
METHODS: In an 11-year period, CPNI was detected in 39 out of 20,718 patients (0.19%): 38 times after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) (38 of 12,726; 0.30%) and in 1 patient after a non-CPB procedure (1 of 7,992; 0.013%). These patients underwent intensive physiotherapeutic treatment. As the majority of CPNI occurred after CPB (97.4%), data of these patients were compared with a 1-year set of 1,032 patients who underwent CPB procedures.
RESULTS: Patie

Peroneal motor studies to the extensor digitorum brevis are commonly performed in electrodiagnosis. They have been investigated by many authors to derive the normal ranges for latency, amplitude, and nerve conduction velocity. Many of these studies, particularly the older ones, have methodological limitations, especially in light of modern technique and statistical applications. They often used small sample sizes. The objective of this study was to generate an expanded database of normative values for the peroneal nerve. In this study, 242 asymptomatic subjects without risk factors for neuropa

We have attempted to quantify the performance of natural versus artificial sensors when used in a closed-loop functional electrical stimulation system. Peroneal nerve stimulation was applied during gait to a multiple sclerosis subject with a drop foot. Stimulation was applied only during the swing phase to provide artificially induced dorsiflexion of the foot. Detection of the onset of the stance phase was accomplished using a standard heel contact switch mounted inside the subject's shoe (the artificial sensor) and using processed nerve signals derived from an implanted nerve-cuff electrode (

Currently used tendon transfers for persistent traumatic paralysis of the common peroneal nerve are based on the transfer of the posterior tibial muscle, an antagonist muscle to the paralytic group of muscles. In order to achieve voluntary active dorsiflexion of the foot and automatic walking we have transposed the lateral head of the gastrocnemius to the anterior side of the lower leg, at the same time suturing the undamaged proximal end of the deep branch of the peroneal nerve to the motor branch of the tibial nerve innervating the lateral head of gastrocnemius muscle. After nerve regenerati

OBJECTIVE The sciatic nerve, particularly its peroneal division, is at risk for injury during total hip arthroplasty (THA), especially when a posterior approach is used. The majority of the morbidity results from the loss of peroneal nerve-innervated muscle function. Approximately one-third of patients recover spontaneously. The objectives of this study were to report the outcomes of distal decompression of the peroneal nerve at the fibular tunnel following sciatic nerve injury secondary to THA and to attempt to identify predictors of a positive surgical outcome. METHODS A retrospective study

After harvesting of the sural nerve, the patient developed a partial palsy of the common peroneal nerve due to a lesion of the peroneal nerve and a neuroma of the sural nerve stump. Motor function recovered after performing neurolysis of the common peroneal nerve and mobilization of the neuroma. The sural nerve, in this case originating from the common peroneal nerve, was harvested using a nerve stripper and four small skin incisions. Direct lesion by the forced use of the nerve-stripping instrument followed by the formation of a neuroma close to the peroneal nerve are the suspected reasons fo

The authors report their experience in the treatment of common peroneal nerve (CPN) injuries using a one-stage procedure of nerve repair and tibialis posterior tendon transfer. A series of 45 patients with traumatic injury and graft repair of the CPN is presented. From 1988 to 1991, the six patients elected for surgery had only nerve repair: five ultimately did not recover, while muscle contraction in the remaining patient was graded M1-2. Since 1991, nerve surgery in our clinic was associated with tendon transfer procedures (39 cases) which were followed by a satisfactory reinnervation rate.
