Association of serum concentrations of persistent organic pollutants with the prevalence of learning disability and attention deficit disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Even though persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are well-known neurotoxicants, there is no previous study, even cross-sectional, on the association between background exposure to POPs and clinically significant developmental disorders, such as learning disability (LD) or attention deficit disorder (ADD), among children from a general population. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Study subjects were 278 children aged 12-15 years included in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2000. The seven most commonly detected POPs (each detectable in >/=20% of chil

Emerging and persistent organic pollutants in sediment cores from the Singapore Straits: Rising pharmaceuticals, variable caffeine and static PAHs.

Five sediment cores of 40 cm length were collected from the Singapore Strait and analysed for emerging and persistent contaminants to assess changing pollutant trends and risk to benthic ecology. Data on the sedimentary accumulation of pharmaceuticals are currently lacking and yet present a potential threat to Singapore's coastal ecosystem. Pharmaceuticals occurred in the order hormones>non-steroidal anti-inflammatory>antibiotics and were highest at the sediment surface then decreased down-core. Similar trends were observed for individual antibiotics, azithromycin 0.18-0.51 ng/g-1, clarithromy

Applications of mixture methods in epidemiological studies investigating the health impact of persistent organic pollutants exposures: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are environmental chemicals characterized by long half-lives in nature and human bodies, posing significant health risks. The concept of the exposome, encompassing all lifetime environmental exposures, underscores the importance of studying POP as mixtures rather than in isolation. The increasing body of evidence on the health impacts of POP mixtures necessitates the proper application of statistical methods. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to summarize studies on the overall effects of POP mixtures, identify patterns in applications of mixture methods-st

Method development and mechanistic study on direct pulsed laser irradiation process for highly effective dechlorination of persistent organic pollutants.

Chlorine-based compounds are typical persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are widely generated in industrial production. This paper reports an effective and rapid pulsed laser irradiation technique for the dechlorination of hexachlorobenzene (HCB), a model pollutant, without additional catalysts or supports. The effects of the laser parameters, including the laser wavelength and power, on the dechlorination efficiency, were also investigated. The optimized results showed that a lower laser wavelength of 266 nm with 10 mJ/pulse power exhibited the highest dechlorination efficiency with 95%

Persistent organic pollutants, pre-pregnancy use of combined oral contraceptives, age, and time-to-pregnancy in the SELMA cohort.

BACKGROUND: We are exposed to several chemicals such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in our everyday lives. Prior evidence has suggested that POPs may have adverse effects on reproductive function by disrupting hormone synthesis and metabolism. While there is age-related decline of fertility, the use of hormonal combined oral contraceptives (COCs) and its association to return of fertility remains controversial. The goal of this study is to investigate the association between exposure to POPs, both individually and as a mixture, and fecundability measured as time-to-pregnancy (TTP) acc

Concentrations of legacy persistent organic pollutants and naturally produced MeO-PBDEs in dugongs (Dugong dugon) from Moreton Bay, Australia.

Dugongs (Dugong dugon) are an iconic and strictly herbivorous species. They inhabit coastal areas, which brings them in contact with urban and agricultural pollutant sources, yet their exposure and susceptibility to environmental pollutants is still largely unknown. The goal of this study was to investigate the presence of several legacy compounds such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and pesticides as well as naturally produced MeO-PBDEs in male and female dugongs from Moreton Bay (n = 24), a semi-enclosed embayment close to Australia's third largest

Contrasted accumulation patterns of persistent organic pollutants and mercury in sympatric tropical dolphins from the south-western Indian Ocean.

Due to their high trophic position and long life span, small cetaceans are considered as suitable bioindicators to monitor the presence of contaminants in marine ecosystems. Here, we document the contamination with persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and total mercury (T-Hg) of spinner (Stenella longirostris, n =21) and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus, n=32) sampled from the coastal waters of La Réunion (south-western Indian Ocean). In addition, seven co-occurring teleost fish species were sampled and analyzed as well. Blubber samples from living dolphins and muscle from te

Association between levels of persistent organic pollutants in adipose tissue and cryptorchidism in early childhood: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cryptorchidism, i.e. failure of the testicular descent to the bottom of the scrotum, is a common birth defect. The evidence from epidemiological, wildlife, and animal studies suggests that exposure to mixtures of endocrine disrupting chemicals during fetal development may play a role in its pathogenesis. We aimed to assess the association between cryptorchidism and prenatal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). METHODS: We conducted a case-control study consisting

Persistent organic pollutants (PCDD/Fs, dioxin-like PCBs, marker PCBs, and PBDEs) in health supplements on the Spanish market.

During the last years, consumption of health supplements has increased in our society. They are recommended as an additional source of minerals, vitamins, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, in the diet. A lot of these supplements contain oils among their components (fish oils or vegetable oils), especially those recommended for their omega-3 content. Due to their persistence and lipophilic characteristics, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), marker PCBs, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) bioaccum

Brominated flame retardants and related chlorinated persistent organic pollutants in fish from river Elbe and its main tributary Vltava.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are widely used industrial chemicals, residues of which can be nowadays found in all environmental compartments. The widespread presence of BFRs in various environmental compartments and food chain is a consequence of both their broad application area and physico-chemical properties, such as resistance to degradation and high lipophilicity. Alike in the case of other halogenated persistent organic pollutants (POPs), fish can be used as a bioindicator of aquatic environment pollution. In presented study, conducted in the year 2005, altogether 80 samples repres

Discriminative influence of persistent organic pollutants on nesting green sea turtles through genotoxicity, oxidative stress and reproductive related markers.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organochloride pesticides (OCPs) affect biodiversity by bioaccumulating through food webs, impacting marine organisms like endangered sea turtles. This study represents the first evaluation of these contaminants in sea turtles nesting in São Tomé and Príncipe. The main goal was to evaluate PCBs, PBDEs and OCPs levels in sea turtles' blood and investigate their potential effects on erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities (ENAs) and oxidative stress and reproduction-related gen

Prenatal exposures to persistent organic pollutants and menstrual characteristics in girls at age 12 in the French PELAGIE cohort.

Few studies have evaluated the impact of prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on menstruation characteristics. Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate the associations between cord blood concentrations of POPs and menstruation characteristics including menarche status, menstrual regularity, pain and duration in girls at age 12. We used data from the French PELAGIE mother-child cohort follow-up at 12 years old which included a questionnaire on menstruation characteristics. POP concentrations of 14 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), 17 polychlorinated biphenyls (PC

Exposure of an endangered seabird species to persistent organic pollutants: Assessing levels in blood and link with reproductive parameters.

Ocean contamination, particularly from persistent organic pollutants (POPs), remains a significant threat to marine predators that occupy high trophic positions. Long-lived procellariform seabirds are apex predators in marine ecosystems and tend to accumulate contaminants. Prolonged exposure to pollutants negatively affects their fitness including reproductive success. Low breeding success may represent a hurdle for the restoration of small and endangered seabird populations, including several highly threatened gadfly petrels. Here we investigated the annual variation (2019 and 2022) in organo

Persistent organic pollutants and mercury in marine biota of the Canadian Arctic: an overview of spatial and temporal trends.

This review summarizes and synthesizes the significant amount of data which was generated on mercury (Hg) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Canadian Arctic marine biota since the first Canadian Arctic Contaminants Assessment Report (CACAR) was published in 1997. This recent body of work has led to a better understanding of the current levels and spatial and temporal trends of contaminants in biota, including the marine food species that northern peoples traditionally consume. Compared to other circumpolar countries, concentrations of many organochlorines (OCs) in Canadian Arctic mari

Nature-Inspired Hybrid Photocatalytic System for Degradation of Persistent Organic Pollutants, Including Pharmaceutical Remains Using Solar-Driven Continuous Flow Reactor.

Sunlight-driven photocatalytic reactors for wastewater treatment have become a growing hot topic among researchers owing to their inexpensiveness, scalable potential, and minimal ecological impact. Herein, we have utilized 3D printing to fabricate a packed bed reactor (PBR) consisting of an open serpentine channel packed with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO) coated onto silica nanoparticles (SiO2) incorporated on cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) that is ZnO@SiO2@CNC. This developed PBR overcomes the expensive and time-consuming limitations of batch reactors with continuous flow mass treatment of per

Maternal B-vitamin status modifies the risk of congenital heart disease in offspring associated with prenatal persistent organic pollutants exposure.

BACKGROUND: No epidemiological studies have systematically evaluated the associations between prenatal exposure to organophosphate esters and polychlorinated biphenyls and the risk of congenital heart disease (CHD) in offspring. Moreover, the potential modifying role of maternal B-vitamin status in persistent organic pollutants (POPs)-CHD associations has not been examined. We therefore investigated the cardiotoxic effects of prenatal POPs exposure and evaluated effect modification by maternal B-vitamin levels. METHODS: A multicenter case-control study was conducted in China from 2016 to 2021

A 15-year atmospheric record of intentionally produced persistent organic pollutants in Spain: Spatial gradients, thermodynamic fractionation, and temporal trends.

This study presents a comprehensive 15-year (2009-2023) assessment of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the Spanish atmosphere to evaluate the Stockholm Convention's effectiveness. Polyurethane foam passive samplers were deployed across 23 sites to monitor legacy pesticides and industrial chemicals. Results reveal a concentration hierarchy dominated by hexachlorobenzene (HCB), which accounted for a median of 41% of the ∑POP concentrations and displayed a remote-enriched spatial pattern characteristic of global distillation. In contrast, legacy pesticides and indicator polychlorinated bip
