OBJECTIVES: To explore how students navigate the emotional, relational, and structural dimensions of learning the nursing profession within a concept-based curriculum (CBC).
METHODS: Guided by Husserlian phenomenology and Wenger's Social Theory of Learning, van Manen's hermeneutic approach informed conversational interviews with eight final-year nursing students.
FINDINGS: Becoming a nurse emerged as a process fueled by reciprocity of care and marked by personal transformation, reflected in evolving experiences of personhood, understanding, and growth. Five experiential structures shaped the

The Person-of-the-Therapist Training approach is a relational framework that supports therapists in intentionally integrating personal experience into clinical work. Despite its growing presence in couple/marriage and family therapy training, no comprehensive synthesis has traced POTT's historical development, empirical foundations, and contemporary relevance. This narrative review employed a structured literature search and thematic synthesis of 30 sources published between 1987 and 2024. Three developmental periods are described: philosophical foundations emphasizing therapist personhood, in

Though pediatric health supervision Down syndrome (DS) guidelines have been established for decades, prior work has shown that primary care providers (PCPs) experience challenges to their adherence and information on family caregivers' experience with the DS guidelines is lacking. To address this literature gap, our study sought to understand the experiences of family caregivers with health supervision care as related to guideline adherence and patient-family experience. Through semi-structured interviews, we found that most caregivers felt their child's health care needs were being met but ex

Nursing homes are facing the rapid spread of COVID-19 among residents and staff and are at the centre of the public health emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As policy changes and interventions designed to support nursing homes are put into place, there are barriers to implementing a fundamental, highly effective element of infection control, namely the isolation of suspected or confirmed cases. Many nursing home residents have dementia, associated with impairments in memory, language, insight, and judgment that impact their ability to understand and appreciate the necessity of isolation

In this issue of Alzheimer's & Dementia, Mashour et al. propose the intriguing hypothesis that some manifestations of late-stage dementia are reversible, albeit transiently. Calling this phenomenon paradoxical lucidity, their paper follows a 2018 workshop sponsored by the National Institute on Aging that assessed the state of knowledge on lucidity in dementia and identified areas ripe for further study. The National Institute on Aging has since released two funding opportunity announcements (RFA-AG-20-016 and RFA-AG-20-017) to establish the building blocks of such a research program. The poten

BACKGROUND: Receiving a dementia diagnosis is a complex experience that can provide clarity about symptoms but often creates uncertainty. Support during and after diagnosis is essential to help individuals navigate living with dementia. This qualitative descriptive study examined experiences during and after diagnosis among people with dementia and care partners in New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec.
METHODS: Interviews with 5 people with dementia and 15 care partners were conducted and then analysed using qualitative content analysis to identify barriers, facilitators, and contextual influen

Volunteers are a popular unpaid support role in end of life care yet how accompaniment influences the dying is underdeveloped. This study examined how companionship works, for whom, in what circumstances and why. Initial realist ideas were developed through participant observation (14 months), document analysis, and realist interviews with companionship trainers (n = 6). Theory testing involved volunteer interviews (n = 7), accounts from the dying, proxy accounts for the dying, and written reflections from companionship training. Companionship helps people live well until they die, prepare for

The 'impairment argument' against abortion developed by Perry Hendricks aims to derive the wrongness of abortion from the wrongness of causing foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Hendricks endorses an 'impairment principle', which states that, if it is wrong to inflict an impairment of a certain degree on an organism, then, ceteris paribus, it is also wrong to inflict a more severe impairment on that organism. Causing FAS is wrong in virtue of the impairment it inflicts. But abortion inflicts an even more severe impairment (death), and so, ceteris paribus, is also wrong. Notably, Hendricks thinks t

Choosing a name is a powerful act, filled with meaning. In most societies, this act is accompanied by specific rites and rituals. By naming a child, we are acknowledging their existence. A transmission is thereby created between the person giving the name and the person who will bear it. The naming of children in West Africa, particularly among the Soninke people, constitutes an example of the elements which come into play when a child is given a name.

The central concern of this article is whether early induction of labor for an anencephalic fetus can ever be morally justified, particularly by a Catholic healthcare ethics committee. By revisiting and refining arguments in articles by Drane (1992) and Bole (1992) published in this journal, a revised argument - consistent with the Catholic moral tradition - can seemingly be constructed that a Catholic healthcare ethics committee might use to justify early induction of labor in some pregnancies involving an anencephalic fetus. Such a revised argument depends upon two central claims; first, tha

In his recent article Perry Hendricks presents what he calls the impairment argument to show that abortion is immoral. To do so, he argues that to give a fetus fetal alcohol syndrome is immoral. Because killing the fetus impairs it more than giving it fetal alcohol syndrome, Hendricks concludes that killing the fetus must also be immoral. Here, I claim that killing a fetus does not impair it in the way that giving it fetal alcohol syndrome does. By examining the reason why giving a fetus this condition is wrong, I conclude that the same reasoning, on common pro-choice accounts, does not apply

This Cultural Case Study examines how self-harm becomes meaningful within particular South Asian moral worlds, drawing on intergenerational family oral histories and autoethnographic reflection spanning Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Tehran, and the United States diaspora. Read alongside South Asian ethnographic and clinical scholarship, these narratives show that bodily self-injury can function as a form of situated agency and relational communication when verbal self-assertion is constrained. Building on prior work that interprets suicide and self-harm as gendered forms of communication in South A

Following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the political, legal, and medical boundaries of spontaneous, elective, and selective abortion are blurring. Based on ethnographic research on Turner Syndrome, a genetic condition with a 98% miscarriage rate and uncertain abortion rates, this article examines the visual politics of reproduction and disability in the United States through the ambiguous treatment of miscarriage. Although infertile, my interlocutors with Turner syndrome emphasized how disability stereotypes, abortion unknowns, and miscarriage statistics impacted their lives. Centering our

Active-duty military service members have a significant risk of sustaining physical and psychological trauma resulting in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Within an interdisciplinary treatment approach at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence, service members participated in mask making during art therapy sessions. This study presents an analysis of the mask-making experiences of service members (n = 370) with persistent symptoms from combat- and mission-related TBI, PTSD, and other concurrent mood issues. Data sources included mask images and therap

Twenty years have passed since Dignity Therapy was introduced as a brief psychotherapeutic intervention grounded in the Model of Dignity in the terminally ill. Designed to address threats to personhood by supporting generativity, meaning, and legacy, it invites patients to create enduring documents that reflect their values, identities, and life narratives. Although initially conceived for end-of-life care, Dignity Therapy has since been adapted for diverse populations, including children, individuals with non-malignant illness, those experiencing cognitive decline, people who are grieving; an

This paper explores the complementarity of Nishida Kitarō's relational ontology with Western bioethics in addressing novel moral dilemmas arising from advanced neural technologies, including brain organoids, human-animal chimeras, and biocomputational systems. Nishida's philosophy transcends the subject-object dichotomy by emphasizing the interconnectedness and co-creative nature of all beings, thereby reframing traditional questions of moral status, personhood, and consent. We examine recent scientific advances and policy debates to demonstrate that Nishida's approach not only enriches ethica

On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health overturned Roe v Wade , and authority to regulate abortion was returned to individual states. It is critically important for all physicians to understand the implications that this ruling may have on reproductive autonomy with regard to abortion care and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Although the intended consequence of abortion bans is to prohibit legal abortion, one unintended consequence may be undue restriction of in vitro fertilization. We summarize the potential of abortion bans, particularly those with per

Available treatments for addiction and substance abuse in Ukraine have been shaped by the economic, political, and social shifts that have followed the country's independence. The introduction of methadone-based opiate substitution therapy (OST) for opiate addicts is especially representative of this. Biomedical paradigms of addiction, its etiology, and its treatment, promoted and paid for by international donors and elite global health entities, are being met by Ukrainian notions of personhood and psychology in both public discourse and clinical settings. Ukrainian physicians who work in OST
