Chlorhexidine swabbing applications under various conditions of use in preventive oral care for persons with disabilities.

A sample of 44 adults with severe disabilities completed a randomized single-blind cross-over study testing chlorhexidine swabbing under various conditions: with/without prior dental prophylaxis, reduced frequency of application (2 vs. 5 times per week), and prolonged use (42 weeks). All subjects received therapeutic doses of 10 mL 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate (Peridex, Procter & Gamble) and 10 mL 0.05% NaF applied with a Toothette (Sage Products). Clinical effectiveness of chlorhexidine swabbing compared with placebo was previously reported. In the present study, while initial benefits were

All teach, all learn: transdisciplinary health professional education on care for persons with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities experience many barriers to healthcare. To address these barriers and the unique needs of this population, improved training and education for health providers, particularly training that includes persons with lived experience and that teaches interprofessional collaboration, are needed. This study applied a framework to examine the value identified in reflections of program educators for a three-week Extension for Community Health Outcomes for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (ECHO-AIDD for Students) program to tea

Household food insecurity among persons with disabilities in Canada: Findings from the 2021 Canadian Income Survey.

BACKGROUND: Income-related food insecurity is an important determinant of health. Persons with disabilities are at a higher risk of experiencing household food insecurity (HFI) than those without disabilities. The main objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of HFI for persons with different types, numbers, and severity of disabilities, and to examine sociodemographic correlates of HFI among this group. DATA AND METHODS: Data from the 2021 Canadian Income Survey (CIS) were used. Disability status was assessed using the short version of the Disability Screening Questions modul

Community Advantage and Individual Self-Efficacy Promote Disaster Preparedness: A Multilevel Model among Persons with Disabilities.

Disaster preparedness initiatives are increasingly focused on building community resilience. Preparedness research has correspondingly shifted its attention to community-level attributes that can support a community's capacity to respond to and recover from disasters. While research at the community level is integral to building resilience, it may not address the specific barriers and motivators to getting individuals prepared. In particular, people with disabilities are vulnerable to disasters, yet research suggests that they are less likely to engage in preparedness behaviors. Limited resear

Healthcare transition in persons with intellectual disabilities: general issues, the Maastricht model, and Prader-Willi syndrome.

In current healthcare, transitional healthcare is a very important and timely issue. Thanks to the major advances made in medical care and technology, many children with childhood onset diseases and/or genetic syndromes survive to adulthood. These children are at risk of not being provided with adequate healthcare as they reach adulthood. Healthcare transition is an essential part of healthcare provision, referred to as the shift from one type of healthcare to another. In Maastricht, we developed a transition/out clinic led by a medical doctor specialized in persons with intellectual disabilit

Workforce participation by persons with disabilities: the National Health Interview Survey Disability Supplement, 1994 to 1995.

Using the National Health Interview Survey Disability Supplement of 1994 to 1995, we examined the factors associated with employment among Americans with disabilities. Persons with disabilities who were more educated were more likely to be working. Married men were more likely to work than unmarried men (odds ratio [OR], 1.58). Blacks were less likely to work than whites (OR, 0.56). Persons with disabilities related to cardiovascular disease (OR, 0.23), musculoskeletal disease (OR, 0.37), and respiratory disease (OR, 0.23) were less likely to work than other Americans with disabilities. A practical staff management package for use in a training program for persons with developmental disabilities.

A staff management package was investigated for increasing and maintaining behavioral training skills of direct-care staff. Behaviors of three direct-care staff members were monitored while they conducted a prevocational program with 27 adult clients with severe or profound mental retardation. The intervention was an easy-to-apply checklist used weekly by a supervisor to give feedback to direct-care staff. The management procedure did not require the supervisor to collect quantitative data to be graphed or charted. Use of the checklist during a weekly morning work session in a multiple-baselin

Mania and intellectual disability: the course of manic symptoms in persons with intellectual disability.

Our aim was to extend the literature by examining the presence of manic symptoms in persons with intellectual deficits with and without bipolar disorder for 3 years. Three groups (bipolar, psychopathology other than bipolar disorder, and no Axis I diagnosis) were formed with 14 participants in each group. Initially, the presence of mania symptoms were examined across diagnostic groups. The bipolar group had significantly greater endorsements on the Parent Version of the Young Mania Rating Scale and the DASH-II Mania subscale item "decreased need for sleep" than did the other groups. Reforming the insanity defence in Ireland to comply with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is the first human rights treaty of this century. It aims to ensure that persons with disabilities have full and effective inclusion in society and are not the subjects of discrimination. Support for the CRPD was unprecedented, attracting widespread approval from states in all regions, and achieving the highest number of signatories to a UN Convention on its opening day. Whilst most of its provisions have been welcomed, the interpretation of several key articles by UN bodies has led to some unanticipated issues of

Social inclusion of persons with disability in employment: what would it take to socially support employed persons with disability in the labor market?

INTRODUCTION: One of the major challenges that persons with disabilities (PWDs) are facing globally is unemployment. The challenge is attributed to systems that are not built with inclusivity in mind by employers. As such, the work of inclusion is not inviting PWDs to do more but to make a difference through social support. Most research on inclusion in the employment of PWDs in low-income settings has been concentrated upon the labor "supply" side, and to the best of our knowledge, no specific studies moved toward inclusion in employment issues from the employers' perspective in informal sett

Beyond economic outcomes: Exploring the social contributions of skills training for persons with disabilities in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Persons with disabilities experience significant economic exclusion in South Africa. While vocational training has often been viewed through a narrow economic lens, its broader social contributions remained under-researched. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the social contributions of skills training for persons with disabilities, with specific attention to empowerment, inclusion and well-being. METHOD: A qualitative multiple-case study design was employed. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews, photovoice, document analysis and field notes with eight participants

Social exchange theory tenets and the employment of persons with disabilities in the Western Cape, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Employment of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in South Africa's public sector remains persistently low despite progressive legislative frameworks. This reflects enduring structural, organisational and attitudinal barriers that limit meaningful inclusion, particularly at a provincial level. Compliance-driven approaches have proven insufficient in addressing the organisational dynamics shaping inclusion. This study is grounded in the social model of disability and applies social exchange theory (SET) to examine how perceptions of costs, benefits and reciprocity influence employment

Factors shaping user involvement in social and health services in Poland: the perspective of persons with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The idea of involving citizens in shaping social and health services is not new. Many authors have stated the lack of citizens’ input in the development of these sectors. Different theoretical frameworks on the user perspective exist, but they are often broad and difficult to connect with the presented topic clearly. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to examine factors influencing the involvement of service users in health and social services in Poland, particularly from the perspective of individuals with disabilities and with chronic mental health conditions. METHODS: The findings prese

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Social Work: Evidence for Impact?

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (hereafter CRPD) has provided a radical imperative for the reform of mental health and capacity legislation around the world. The interpretation of the CRPD has been controversial, ranging from the complete abolition of detention, forcible treatment, and substitute decision-making to accepting that elements of these measures need to be retained based on non-discriminatory criteria, additional safeguards, and a comprehensive shift towards supported decision-making. While the potential effects of the CRPD on mental health s
