Effects of a physical education intervention on attention and inhibitory control in Ecuadorian children with intellectual disabilities.

Background: Studies on physical activity interventions indicated a facilitative effect on cognitive performance in persons with intellectual disabilities; however, research is scarce, especially in low/middle-income countries. Aim: We explored the effects of a 6-week enriched physical education program on inhibitory control and attention functions in Ecuadorian children with intellectual disabilities. Methods: Thirty children with mild intellectual disabilities (10-14 years old) were randomly assigned to an intervention or control group. Before and after the intervention, attention and inhibit

Implicit theories concerning the intelligence of individuals with Down syndrome.

Studies over the past three decades have shown that learning difficulties are not only determined by neurological disorders, but also by motivational and/or socio-cognitive factors Among these factors, implicit theories of intelligence (also referred to as conceptions, mindsets or beliefs about intelligence) are key elements. The belief that intelligence is fixed (entity theory), as opposed to malleable (incremental theory), is generally associated with negative teaching practices and poorer student outcomes, yet beliefs about the intelligence of individuals with intellectual disabilities have

Examining intellectual functioning and disability in Singapore's legal landscape.

Individuals with intellectual disabilities constitute a significant portion of those managed within the criminal justice system. Courts are increasingly challenged with determining appropriate sentencing. Additionally, many of these individuals have complex social and medical backgrounds, necessitating a multidisciplinary approach to assess their legal and moral culpability. Consequently, these factors impact sentencing outcomes, including decisions regarding incarceration versus rehabilitation programs. This current study utilises all available court judgments involving intellectual functioni

Successful strategies for including adults with intellectual disabilities in research studies that use interpretative phenomenological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adults with intellectual disabilities are not often asked to participate in health research. This may be because researchers perceive them as unable to participate meaningfully with or without significant support and anticipate difficulty in obtaining ethical approval because of issues concerning consent and mental capacity. This means that the voices of adults with intellectual disabilities are often missing from health research and their experiences and views are unexplored. AIM: To share successful strategies for accessing, recruiting and collecting data from a purposive sample

The Rule of Law for the Exercise of Marriage and Reproductive Rights for Women with Intellectual Disabilities in China.

Women with intellectual disabilities (WIDs) are entitled to the rights to marriage and reproduction under Chinese law. However, Chinese marriage and reproduction regimes have imposed restrictions on their right to marry that limit the exercise of their reproductive rights. Marrying WIDs has become a popular choice for men in rural areas. Although in China's Civil Code, the legislature has repealed the prior requirement of a medical examination for marriage registration, the exercise of rights to marriage and reproduction by WIDs is still restricted. China has not fully implemented equal rights

Assessing the Right to Interpersonal Relationships, Home and Family for People With Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities recognises in Article 23 the right to marriage, family, parenthood and interpersonal relationships. However, monitoring this right is challenging due to a lack of evaluation tools. METHOD: This study presents the psychometric validation of items assessing Article 23, which makes up the interpersonal relationships subscale of the #Rights4MeToo Scale, based on responses from 1215 people with intellectual disabilities, family members and professionals. RESULTS: The findings revealed a final unidimensional 7-item structure, hi

Adapting psychological interventions for people with severe and profound intellectual disabilities: A behavioural activation exemplar.

BACKGROUND: People with severe to profound intellectual disabilities experience similar or higher levels of depression than those with more mild intellectual disabilities. Yet, there is an absence of evidence about how to adapt existing psychological therapies for this population. METHOD: A behavioural activation intervention (BeatIt) for people with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities was adapted for people with severe to profound intellectual disabilities and depression. Key considerations include: (i) beginning with a more in-depth assessment process; (ii) including the person in se

Gap analysis of service needs for adults with neurodevelopmental disorders.

In Florida, the Agency for Persons with Disabilities provides waivers for adults with the following types of disabilities: intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down syndrome, and Prader-Willi syndrome. This review examined the peer-reviewed literature to indicate and assess the common needs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Current models of service delivery, the efficacy of these services, and remaining gaps in the need fulfillment of individuals within the six diagnostic categorizations of interest were examined. Sev

Is it possible to use interpretative phenomenological analysis in research with people who have intellectual disabilities?

BACKGROUND: This paper examines the appropriateness of using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) in research with people who have intellectual disabilities, focussing on quality. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search to identify published studies. We assessed the quality of the studies using a bespoke framework, adapted from previous reviews, and articles on indicators of "good" IPA work. RESULTS: Twenty-eight papers were reviewed. The studies were of varying quality: 6 (22%) papers were rated as "good" quality; 16 (57%) were "acceptable", and 6 (21%) were "poor." This ratio w

Aspects of digestive tract tumors in Down syndrome: a literature review.

The purpose of this study was to describe the digestive neoplasms found in persons with Down syndrome. Due to intellectual disability, persons with Down syndrome do not convey their symptoms and pain, leading to delayed diagnosis and potentially worse outcome. It is thus important to know which organs are at risk for tumors and possible tumor risk factors. In a review of the literature, we found 13 benign tumors and 127 cancers in 1 fetus, 8 children, and 131 adults with Down syndrome. The review suggests a decreased incidence of digestive cancer, however, with a possible increased incidence o

Sex and intellectual disability--dealing with sexual health issues.

BACKGROUND: Sexual health is a vital but often neglected aspect of healthcare for people with intellectual disability. It may initially be difficult for the general practitioner to raise sexuality issues with patients with intellectual disability, but there is potential for simple interventions that offer great benefit. OBJECTIVE: This article describes ways in which the GP may be able to assist people with an intellectual disability with their sexual health needs. DISCUSSION: It is important to engage the person with intellectual disability directly, preferably alone. A person with intellec
