The feasibility and acceptability of an inoculative intervention video for gambling advertising: a focus group study of academics and experts-by-experience.

BACKGROUND: Gambling advertising employs a range of persuasive strategies. We therefore aimed to evaluate a counter-advertising intervention video to increase resilience to gambling advertising persuasion. METHODS: Three in-depth focus groups were conducted, and each group contained a mixture of gambling-related academics (N = 12) and experts with lived experience of gambling-related harm (N = 10). Participants were given access to the intervention video and provided feedback during the focus groups. Qualitative data were audio recorded and thematically analysed by the research team. RESULTS

Preventing fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: the role of protection motivation theory.

This article examines health communication campaigns aimed at preventing alcohol consumption among women who are pregnant or attempting to become pregnant. Relevant communication materials were gathered and a qualitative review was conducted. A majority of the campaigns followed the tenets of protection motivation theory by focusing on the threat variables of severity and vulnerability, as well as emphasizing response efficacy. Few campaigns focused on costs or self-efficacy. Future fetal alcohol spectrum disorders prevention initiatives should attempt to reduce perceived costs, as well as inc

Teaching breast self-examination through pantomime: a unique approach to community outreach.

Cancer educators should pursue strategies to improve African American women's adherence to breast cancer screening. Successful educational approaches consider the cultural context and belief systems of African Americans. Storytelling provides a forum in which women teach one another through personal testimony. The Witness Project of St. Louis created an innovative approach to storytelling, pantomime, which is visually effective in conveying the story of how to perform breast self-examination (BSE). Pantomime offers a powerful message of the importance of regular BSE.

"I won't do what you tell me!": elevated mood and the assessment of advice-taking in euthymic bipolar I disorder.

We hypothesized that when individuals with bipolar disorder are engaged in goal-directed behaviour and experience elevated mood, their decision-making becomes less constrained by advice from other people. This process may allow their goal-directed behaviour to persist, contributing to manic symptoms. Three groups of 32 participants: euthymic-bipolar-I, remitted-unipolar and never-depressed healthy controls were allocated to either a high or low mood induction. Advice-taking was assessed before and after the induction by a computerized task incorporating facial images. The bipolar group signifi

Dr. Contrarian: a persona-driven conversational AI agent for coaching argumentative reasoning in infectious disease classroom debates.

Critical thinking and persuasive communication are essential for biology graduates navigating socioscientific dilemmas. While debate pedagogy fosters problem-solving, autonomy, competence, and relatedness aligned with adult learning and self-determination theories, inexperienced students often struggle with the cognitive load and anxiety from this format. To bridge this gap, "Dr. Contrarian," a persona-based conversational AI agent, was developed to function as an adversarial coach during debate preparation. Survey data (n = 21) adapted from the Technology Acceptance Model show that 85.7% of s

When Deepfakes Meet Herd Immunity: Artificial Intelligence, Vaccine Avoidance, and the Next Infodemic Threat.

Vaccination remains among the most effective public health interventions, but its impact increasingly depends on public trust and a reliable information environment. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, misinformation became a major obstacle to vaccine uptake and disease control. The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (AI)-including synthetic text generators, conversational chatbots, deepfake images, synthetic audio, and AI-generated videos-has changed how misinformation can be produced, personalized, and disseminated. This Perspective argues that AI-ge

Long-term cognitive deficits in patients after surgery on aneurysms of the anterior communicating artery.

The long term recovery of a series of 27 patients who had undergone rupture and repair of an aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery was assessed using a number of neuropsychological measures. Testing took place 12 to 84 months post surgery. On the basis of the results from tests of intellect, memory, and conceptual learning, three subgroups of patients were identified: those with persuasive cognitive defects, those with evidence of residual frontal lobe damage and those who showed no evidence of dysfunction. The occurrence of cerebral vasospasm was the most consistent predictor of long

John Bartlett and bioterrorism.

Until 1997, the subject of bioterrorism was not discussed within the medical community and deliberately ignored in national planning efforts. Biological weapons were regarded as "morally repulsive." This complacency stemmed from a 1972 Biological Weapons Convention where all countries agreed to cease offensive biological weapons research. In the 1990s, however, the Soviet Union was discovered to have an extensive bioweapons program and a Japanese religious cult sought to launch an anthrax attack on Tokyo. Biological weapons such as smallpox and anthrax had the potential to cause a national cat

The role of message frame, perceived risk, and ambivalence in individuals' decisions to become organ donors.

The decision to become an organ donor involves considering both self-relevant risks and the needs of others. This study applied prospect theory to examine how news exemplar message frames that focus on the possible survival or death of a potential organ transplant recipient affect participants' willingness to become organ donors. Perceived personal risk and ambivalence were examined as moderating variables. Results indicate that risk, rather than ambivalence, played an instrumental role in participants' decisions to donate. Although no main effects or interactions related to message frame emer

Uterine abnormalities and embryo implantation: clinical opinion altered by peer debate.

Medical professionals often hold different views on patient treatment. This study assessed the degree to which these views differ and the degree to which these opinions changed following peer debate. The authors used an audience response system at an Israeli Fertility Association symposium. Clinical cases in the field of reproductive surgery were presented and the favoured management approach was recorded from each participant before and after holding peer debates. The cases presented were: endometrial assessment prior to artificial reproductive treatment, the management of thin endometrium, e

Brainwashing and battering fatigue. Psychological abuse in domestic violence.

Intimate partner violence occurs often in the United States; it involves an interrelated combination of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, usually directed against women. The psychological aspect deserves special attention because victims who lose their independence, self-esteem, and dignity tend to remain in abusive situations. The abuse is perpetrated by a domestic partner to maintain power and control in the relationship. To assert control, the abuser uses "brainwashing tactics" similar to those used on prisoners of war, hostages, or members of a cult. Common features of brainwashin

Fear, threat, and perceptions of efficacy from frightening skin cancer messages.

Fear appeal messages were designed and tested to ascertain their effectiveness in promoting skin protective behaviors. Theoretically guided by the Extended Parallel Process Model, the fear appeal messages in this study conveyed the seriousness of exposed and unprotected skin for college students in the Southwestern United States, and recommended a series of behaviors that would protect individuals from serious sunburns. The results demonstrated that fear appeals are effective in promoting skin protective behaviors. Specifically, highly threatening fear appeal messages were most effective when

The Distinct Roles of Anger and Hope in PFAS Risk Processing: Integrating Mixed Emotional Appeals and Efficacy Information into the EPPM.

Guided by the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM), this study examines the distinct persuasive mechanisms of mixed emotional appeals and efficacy information in the context of environmental risk communication (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, PFAS). Results of a 3 (emotional appeals: fear/fear + anger/fear + hope) × 2 (efficacy information: low/high) between-subjects experiment (N = 405) in China revealed that adding anger to fear appeals significantly increased perceived threat, whereas adding hope enhanced perceived self-efficacy. Although providing high-efficacy information enhanced

Be My Assistant or My Partner? How AI Relational Roles and Goal Distance Impact Consumers' Intentions to Participate in Collective Sustainable Behavior.

Encouraging broad consumer participation is an important pathway to achieving sustainable development. Current research mostly focuses on individual sustainable behavior, with less attention given to collective sustainable behavior under a shared goal. This work is based on the widespread embedding and use of relational AI in different scenarios, employing three studies to verify how AI relational roles and goal distance jointly influence consumers' participation intention in collective sustainable behavior. The research found that when an assistant-type AI is matched with a large-distance goa

Disparities between public health educational materials and the scientific evidence that smokeless tobacco use causes cancer.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: We reviewed 4 dozen health education brochures on the dangers of smokeless tobacco (ST) use, printed between 1981 and 2001 and available to the public in 2002. Collectively, these brochures state that ST use causes oral leukoplakia, other oral conditions, and cancers of the oral cavity, larynx, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, lung, breast, prostate, bladder, and kidney. We then reviewed the scientific literature to determine whether these claims were substantiated. RESULTS: Only for oral leukoplakia and several oral conditions is the evidence persuasive for caus

Message framing and mammography screening: a theory-driven intervention.

Although the rising incidence of breast cancer has prompted a surge of intervention strategies aimed at increasing women's use of mammography screening, the majority of patient-directed interventions have not been driven by relevant theoretical work on persuasive health communication. The authors evaluated an intervention derived from prospect theory that was designed to increase women's adherence to recommendations for annual mammography screening. They sent 1 of 3 reminder letters (positive frame, negative frame, or standard hospital prompt) to 929 randomly selected women who were due for ma

Developing a community-level anti-HIV/AIDS stigma and homophobia intervention in new York city: The project CHHANGE model.

HIV/AIDS stigma and homophobia are associated with significant negative health and social outcomes among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and those at risk of infection. Interventions to decrease HIV stigma have focused on providing information and education, changing attitudes and values, and increasing contact with people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), activities that act to reduce stereotyped beliefs and prejudice, as well as acts of discrimination. Most anti-homophobia interventions have focused on bullying reduction and have been implemented at the secondary and post-secondary education

Theoretical perspectives on public communication preparedness for terrorist attacks.

The experience of federal health authorities in responding to the mailed anthrax attacks in the Fall of 2001 sheds light on the challenges of public information dissemination in emergencies. Lessons learned from the Fall of 2001 have guided more recent efforts related to crisis communication and preparedness goals. This article applies theories and evidence from the field of communication to provide an orientation to how public health communication can best contribute to the preparedness effort. This theoretical orientation provides a framework to systematically assess current recommendations

Establishing the value of Indigenous eye health programs: health needs, economic priority and performance assessment approaches.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper was to compare three different approaches that are used in support of additional funding of health programs, using Indigenous eye health programs (IEHPs) as an example. These approaches are Heath and Health Care Needs, Economic Priority (Value for Money) and Conformity with Health Services Performance Standards. METHODS: A review of relevant literature was conducted to identify relevant benchmarks and assess IEHPs. RESULTS: In terms of health needs, vision loss is the fourth highest contributor to the Indigenous health gap. Additional funding for Indigenous

Testing Theory-Based Messages to Encourage Women at Average Risk for Breast Cancer to Consider Biennial Mammography Screening.

BACKGROUND: The US Preventive Services Task Force does not recommend routine annual mammography screening for women aged 40-49 at average risk. Little research has been done to develop theory-based communication interventions to facilitate informed decision-making about reducing potentially low-value mammography screening. PURPOSE: Evaluate the effects of theory-based persuasive messages on women's willingness to consider delaying screening mammography until age 50 or have mammograms biennially. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled communication experiment online with a population-b
