Gender roles in ruminant disease management in Uganda: Implications for the control of peste des petits ruminants and Rift Valley fever.

There is a distinct division of tasks and roles between men and women in livestock management in the different ruminant production systems in Uganda. Division of roles can influence disease control and prevention. This qualitative study asks what men and women do to prevent or control diseases that affect them and their livestock and what factors influence the choice of disease control measures taken. Discussants represented three production systems (pastoral, agro-pastoral, and mixed crop livestock), selected for the high prevalence of two livestock diseases (peste des petits ruminants and Ri

Investigation of the Clinical and Diagnostic Aspects of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in Sheep from the Southern Region of Iraq.

Mycoplasma is unique among prokaryotes because of its small size, small genomes, and complete lack of cell walls, which makes them cell wall-less prokaryotes. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of vaccinating one-day-old chicks with inactivated and live vaccines (CRDF) of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) on their humoral immune response and immune organs. The Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay was used to measure Ab titers and investigate histopathological changes. A total of 130 one-day-old broiler chicks were randomly divided into four groups of 30. The groups were treated as follows: G1 in

Intranasal Peste des petits ruminants virus vaccination of goats using Irvingia gabonensis gum as delivery system: hematological and humoral immune responses.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) in Africa continues to defy conventional vaccinational approaches aimed at its control. There is need for route modification and immunopotentiation of the current vaccination methods, using easily affordable materials. This study evaluates the immunomodulatory potential of Irvingia gabonensis (IG) seed gum extract for intranasal PPR vaccination in goats using attenuated Nigeria 75/1 PPR vaccine. Twenty West African dwarf goats were divided into four groups (n=5). Group 1 was vaccinated intranasally using IG gum as vehicle; Group 2 was vaccinated intranasally wi

Seroprevalence of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) and associated risk factors in selected sub-counties of Lyantonde district, South Western Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Lyantonde District, Uganda, is a recognized hotspot for Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) outbreaks. However, the magnitude and risk factors of PPR in this area remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of PPR antibodies in goats and sheep and to identify associated risk factors in selected sub-counties of Lyantonde District. METHODS: A cross-sectional serosurvey was conducted in July 2024 in three purposively selected sub-counties (Lyantonde, Lyakajula, and Kinuuka), chosen for their large small ruminant populations, high livestock trade activity, a

Near-Whole-Genome Sequencing of Peste Des Petits Ruminants Virus Lineage IV From the Savannah District, Northern Côte d'Ivoire in 2023.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting sheep and goats, causing substantial economic losses in endemic countries. In the Savannah district of Côte d'Ivoire, knowledge of the genetic diversity and molecular epidemiology of the PPR virus (PPRV) remains limited. This study investigated the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships of PPRV circulating in this region using whole-genome sequencing (WGS). A cross-sectional survey was conducted between September and December 2023. Nasal swabs collected from sheep and goats were screened for PPRV ribonucl

Pathogenesis of wild-type- and vaccine-based recombinant peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) expressing EGFP in experimentally infected domestic goats.

Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) is a highly contagious morbillivirus related to measles and canine distemper virus, mostly affecting small ruminants. The corresponding PPR disease has a high clinical impact in goats and is characterized by fever, oral and nasal erosions, diarrhoea and pneumonia. In addition, massive infection of lymphoid tissues causes lymphopaenia and immune suppression. This results in increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial infections, explaining the observed high mortality in some outbreaks. We studied the pathogenesis of PPR by experimental inoculation of

The Development of a Multivalent Capripoxvirus-Vectored Vaccine Candidate to Protect against Sheeppox, Goatpox, Peste des Petits Ruminants, and Rift Valley Fever.

Capripoxviruses are the causative agents of sheeppox, goatpox, and lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle, which cause economic losses to the livestock industry in Africa and Asia. Capripoxviruses are currently controlled using several live attenuated vaccines. It was previously demonstrated that a lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) field isolate from Warmbaths (WB) South Africa, ORF 005 (IL-10) gene-deleted virus (LSDV WB005KO), was able to protect sheep and goats against sheeppox and goatpox. Subsequently, genes encoding the protective antigens for peste des petits ruminants (PPR) and Rift Valley f

Depletion of CD8+ T cells from vaccinated goats does not affect protection from challenge with wild-type peste des petits ruminants virus.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a severe disease of goats and sheep that is widespread in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The disease is caused by peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV); cell culture-attenuated strains of PPRV have been shown, both experimentally and by extensive use in the field, to be effective vaccines and are widely used. We have previously demonstrated that these vaccines elicit both serological (PPRV-specific antibody) and cell-based (PPRV-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells) immune responses. However, it is not known which of these responses are required for protectio

Bovine Herpesvirus-4-Based Vector Delivering Peste des Petits Ruminants Virus Hemagglutinin ORF Induces both Neutralizing Antibodies and Cytotoxic T Cell Responses.

Peste des Petits Ruminants Virus (PPRV) is an extremely infective morbillivirus that primarily affects goats and sheep. In underdeveloped countries where livestock are the main economical resource, PPRV causes considerable economic losses. Protective live attenuated vaccines are currently available but they induce antibody responses similar to those produced in PPRV naturally infected animals. Effective vaccines able to distinguish between vaccinated and naturally infected animals are required to PPRV control and eradication programs. Hemagglutinin (H) is a highly immunogenic PPRV envelope gly

Risk mapping of peste des petits ruminants virus spread in nine countries surrounding the black sea: a spatial multicriteria decision analysis approach.

INTRODUCTION: Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious viral disease of small ruminants (SR) with major socioeconomic impacts. Although targeted for global eradication by 2030, PPR continues to spread and reemerge in previously free areas. In countries surrounding the Black Sea, where small ruminant production is critical for rural livelihoods and national economies, PPR is endemic in Türkiye and has recently emerged in neighboring countries, raising concerns about further transboundary spread, including into the European Union. This study, conducted prior to the 2024-2025 outbr

Unveiling of the Co-Infection of Peste des Petits Ruminants Virus and Caprine Enterovirus in Goat Herds with Severe Diarrhea in China.

Here, we report the discovery of two viruses associated with a disease characterized by severe diarrhea on a large-scale goat farm in Jilin province. Electron Microscopy observations revealed two kinds of virus particles with the sizes of 150-210 nm and 20-30 nm, respectively. Detection of 276 fecal specimens from the diseased herds showed the extensive infection of peste des petits ruminants virus (63.77%, 176/276) and caprine enterovirus (76.81%, 212/276), with a co-infection rate of 57.97% (160/276). These results were partially validated with RT-PCR, where all five PPRV-positive and CEV-po

A recombinant capripoxvirus expressing the F protein of peste des petits ruminants virus and the P12A3C of foot-and-mouth disease virus.

BACKGROUND: Peste des petits ruminants (PPR), foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and sheep pox and goat pox are three important infectious diseases that infect goats, sheep and other small ruminants. It is well-known that the prevention of three diseases rely mainly on their individual vaccines. However, the vaccines have a variety of different disadvantages, such as short duration of immunity, increasing the number of vaccinations, and poor thermal stability. The purpose of this study is to construct a recombinant goat pox virus (rGPV) capable of expressing the F gene of PPRV and the P12A3C gene of

Local disease risk management practices and barriers to vaccination against peste des petits ruminants among smallholder sheep and goat farmers in northern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) remains a major constraint to small ruminant production in Nigeria, threatening rural livelihood and food security, despite the existence of a national control program. Empirical evidence on farmers' management practices and reasons for low vaccination uptake remains limited. This study aims to explore local management practices, perceptions, and barriers to vaccination among smallholder farmers in Bauchi, Kano and Plateau states. METHOD: A socioeconomic study was conducted in 52 villages across the three states, with a total of 104

Epidemiological and Operational Constraints on the Feasibility of Peste des Petits Ruminants Eradication Target by 2030: Necessity for a New Pragmatic Road Map.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) remains a major constraint to small ruminant production and food security, and a global eradication target for 2030 have been set by FAO/WOAH. This review analyses recent evidence on the feasibility of that target by integrating epidemiological indicators, operational performance of vaccination and surveillance systems, and structural drivers that sustain transmission. We find that the main barriers to eradication are not either virological/methodological or programmatic: achieving and sustaining high population immunity in pastoral and highly mobile systems; c

Creation of poxvirus expressing foot-and-mouth and peste des petits ruminant disease virus proteins.

OBJECTIVE: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and Peste des petits ruminant disease (PPR) are acute and severe infectious diseases of sheep and are listed as animal diseases for compulsory immunization. However, there is no dual vaccine to prevent these two diseases. The Modified Vaccinia virus Ankara strain (MVA) has been widely used in the construction of recombinant live vector vaccine because of its large capacity of foreign gene, wide host range, high safety, and immunogenicity. In this study, MVA-GFP recombinant virus skeleton was used to construct dual live vector vaccines against FMD and PPR

Peste des petits ruminants virus virulence is associated with an early inflammatory profile in the tonsils and cell cycle arrest in lymphoid tissue.

UNLABELLED: Using a systems immunology approach, this study comprehensively explored the immunopathogenesis of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) focussing on strain-dependent differences in virulence. Saanen goats were infected either with the highly virulent (Morocco 2008 [MA08]) or the low-virulent (Ivory Coast 1989 [IC89]) strain of the PPR virus (PPRV). As expected, MA08-infected goats exhibited higher clinical scores, pronounced lymphocyte depletion, and lesions affecting mucosal and lymphoid tissues. CD4 T cells were more affected in terms of depletion and infection in peripheral blood. T
