Domestic Water Mineral Composition and Incident Glaucoma Risk: A Prospective Cohort Study From the UK Biobank.

IMPORTANCE: Controlled substances have regulatory requirements under the US Federal Controlled Substance Act that must be met before pharmacies can stock and dispense them. However, emerging evidence suggests there are pharmacy-level barriers in access to buprenorphine for treatment for opioid use disorder even among pharmacies that dispense other opioids. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the proportion of Medicaid-participating community retail pharmacies that dispense buprenorphine, out of Medicaid-participating community retail pharmacies that dispense other opioids and assess if the proportion disp

Co-use of Opioid Medications and Alcohol Prevention Study (COAPS).

While there is limited research in the field regarding the various dimensions of co-use of alcohol and opioid medication, particularly related to co-use and levels of severity, our research has shown 20% to 30% of community pharmacy patients receiving opioid pain medications are engaged in co-use. Co-use of alcohol and opioid medications is a significant risk factor for opioid-related overdose. Community pharmacy is a valuable yet underutilized resource and setting for addressing the US opioid epidemic, with an untapped potential for identification of and intervention for risks associated with

Using simulated patient methodology to assess sick day guidance in community pharmacy: The case of an elderly patient with diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Certain high-risk medication, such as diuretics, should be temporarily adjusted during sick days (diarrhoea, vomiting or fever) to reduce the risk of adverse drug events. Guidelines refer to this as 'sick day guidance'. Prior research has shown limited awareness among pharmacy staff of these recommendations. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed how community pharmacies in the Netherlands address a simulated self-care inquiry related to diarrhoea from a 71-year-old patient with diabetes. METHODS: Three trained simulated informal caregivers visited community pharmacies unannounced to see

Perspectives from opioid treatment program staff on community pharmacy-based methadone dispensing in North Carolina.

INTRODUCTION: Methadone is an effective medication for the treatment of opioid use disorder, yet barriers to treatment access exist. Community pharmacies are more accessible than opioid treatment programs (OTPs) and are utilized in countries other than the United States to observe methadone dosing and dispense take-home doses. The purpose of this study was to assess North Carolina OTP staff perceptions towards community pharmacy-based methadone dispensing. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was used to assess the perceived acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility of community pha

Development of a pharmacy-based HIV PrEP service delivery intervention for Washington, District of Columbia (DC): A study protocol.

Pharmacy-based PrEP service delivery models can help address many of the barriers that inhibit the uptake of PrEP. In an increasing number of states, legislation has been passed, or is under consideration, to allow pharmacists to initiate PrEP without a prescription from a physician or other prescriber. However, there is not yet legislation in Washington, DC to allow pharmacy-based PrEP despite its potential to curb new cases of HIV, which disproportionately affect the Black community in the area. The DC Ends HIV Plan has a goal of less than 130 new cases of HIV per year by 2030, which would r

The South African community pharmacy sector-an untapped reservoir for delivering HIV services.

Differentiated service delivery is recommended to improve the uptake of HIV testing and treatment for people living with HIV. One service delivery option yet to be fully capitalised on is community pharmacies. There are approximately 3,580 registered community pharmacies in South Africa. A total of 1,110 (31%) of these pharmacies are corporate chain pharmacies located in cities and towns, the remainder are individually owned, many of which are in less populated poorer settings. Community pharmacies traditionally play a pivotal role in providing health education to the populations they serve an

Optimising community pharmacy PrEP delivery for cisgender female sex workers in Uganda: Protocol for a mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use among cisgender female sex workers (FSWs), a population at disproportionately high HIV acquisition risk in Uganda, remains suboptimal. Uptake and continued use are constrained by barriers, such as limited clinical hours, long distances to access facility-based PrEP services, and high mobility among FSWs. Community pharmacies may offer a more accessible PrEP delivery model due to extended operating hours and convenient locations. This study aims to evaluate the accessibility and capacity of pharmacies in Kampala, Uganda, to serve as potential si

Perceived importance of tailored education to prevent second victim phenomenon in clinical pharmacy practice: a focus group study with community pharmacists.

BACKGROUND: The second victim phenomenon, referring to the impact of patient safety incidents on healthcare professionals, also affects pharmacists. Dispensing errors or inadequate counselling cause anxiety, reduced motivation, and staff turnover. Support programmes exist for healthcare professionals, but not specifically for pharmacists. AIM: To explore pharmacists' perceptions of tailored education to enhance competencies in overcoming second victim experiences, including (i) potential impacts, (ii) recommended content for professional development and undergraduate curricula, (iii) preferre

Demographic and socioeconomic correlates to buprenorphine access in pharmacies.

BACKGROUND: Research has focused on buprenorphine prescribing with limited attention to the role of pharmacy access to buprenorphine for opioid use disorder. OBJECTIVE: This study examines demographic and socioeconomic correlates to buprenorphine access in Georgia pharmacies. METHODS: A 5-question (12 potential subqueries) telephone administered survey was used to investigate access and stocking patterns of specific dosages and formulations of buprenorphine in Georgia pharmacies (n = 119). Descriptive statistics characterized physician and pharmacy demographics and buprenorphine stocking pra

Social and commercial determinants of inappropriate antibiotic use in resource-constrained settings: A social-ecological system framework analysis.

BACKGROUND: Non-prescription antibiotic use is common in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in community-settings, yet research often overlooks social and commercial drivers beyond formal-healthcare. METHODS: This qualitative study conducted 64 in-depth interviews-16 each with pharmacy drug-sellers, pharmaceutical sales-representatives, registered-physicians, and antibiotic-users-across two urban and two rural areas in Bangladesh. Using a social-ecological systems framework, it examined how social-and-commercial determinants influence perceptions and practices in antibiotic market

The impact of clinical pharmacy services within an oncology center of excellence on patient outcomes and cost efficiency.

BACKGROUND: Evidence is mounting that clinical programs for specialty pharmacies can substantively contribute to improved treatment. As cancer is currently the second leading cause of death in the United States, clinical pharmacy programs may improve outcomes for millions of cancer patients. A center of excellence in outpatient specialty pharmacies may best leverage these benefits. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We observed the relationship between engaging with an insurance provider's affiliated pharmacy's remotely operated Oncology Center of Excellence (COE) and health outcomes and medical co

Prescribing power and equitable access to care: Evidence from pharmacists in Ontario, Canada.

Allowing pharmacists to directly treat patients may increase equitable access to healthcare and improve patient outcomes, but raises concerns about supply-side moral hazard or patient substitution away from regular physician-based care. We study the effects of a 2023 policy allowing pharmacists to prescribe for minor ailments in Ontario, Canada. We use Advan foot traffic data to measure how this policy affected visits to pharmacies and generated spillover effects on visits to non-pharmacy medical facilities (Research, 2022). Allowing pharmacists to prescribe led to a 16% increase in total visi
