Growing evidence indicates that there is an emerging link between environmental pollution and cardiac hypertrophy, while the mechanism is unclear. The objective of this study was to examine whether phenanthrene (Phe) could cause cardiac hypertrophy, and elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved. We found that: 1) Phe exposure increased the heart weight and cardiomyocyte size of rats; 2) Phe exposure led to enlarged cell size, and increased protein synthesis in H9C2 cells; 3) Phe exposure induced important markers of cardiac hypertrophy, such as atrial natriuretic peptide, B-type natriuretic

The strain Sphingomonas sp. GY2B is a high efficient phenanthrene-degrading strain isolated from crude oil contaminated soils that displays a broad-spectrum degradation ability towards PAHs and related aromatic compounds. This paper reports embedding immobilization of strain GY2B in calcium alginate gel beads and the rapid degradation of phenanthrene by the embedded strains. Results showed that embedded immobilized strains had high degradation percentages both in mineral salts medium (MSM) and 80% artificial seawater (AS) media, and had higher phenanthrene degradation efficiency than the free

Black carbon (BC; soot and charcoal) can be an extremely strong sorbent for organic compounds. In a previous study, sorption of d(10)-phenanthrene (d(10)-PHE) to BC in an unmodified contaminated sediment was found to be nine times less than that for BC isolated from this sediment. To find out the mechanism of this sorption attenuation (competition for BC sites between d(10)-PHE and native PAHs or blocking of BC sites by natural organic matter), we determined the effect on d(10)-PHE-BC sorption isotherms of additions of either PAHs or precipitated humic acid. Addition of humic acid did not sign

Six 11-O-alkoxy derivatives of the phenol 15,16-dihydro-11-hydroxycyclopenta[a]phenanthren-17-one were prepared and tested for their ability to initiate skin tumours on mouse skin after topical application, followed by promotion with croton oil. The 11-methoxy derivative was the most active, but was less so than the strong carcinogen 15,16-dihydro-11-methyl-cyclopenta[a]phenanthren-17-one (Ib). The 11-ethoxy derivative was somewhat less active as a tumour initiator than the 11-methoxy compound, and the 11-n-propoxy and 11-n-pentoxy derivatives were inactive. The 11-iso-propoxy and, surprisingl

OBJECTIVE: Organic compounds present in environmental pollution are currently regarded as major health threats. Phenanthrene (Phe), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, impairs testicular function through oxidative stress, leading to the failure of spermatogenesis. This study aimed to explore the potential beneficial effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) on testicular tissue and sperm parameters following Phe exposure in mice.
METHODS: Twenty-four adult male mice, aged 8 weeks, were randomly divided into three groups: control, Phe, and Phe+PBM. In the Phe and Phe+PBM groups, mice received Phe (50

Minimizing the accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in crops is crucial for human health. While OsNRT2.3b overexpression reduced phenanthrene (Phe) in rice, the underlying mechanisms and its response to complex conditions remained unclear. This study first confirmed a negative correlation between OsNRT2.3b expression and Phe utilizing 16 varieties. Further, to investigate whether the pH-sensing site H167 of OsNRT2.3b is the key, the wild-type (WT), OsNRT2.3b-overexpression (Ox), and H167-mutated OsNRT2.3b overexpression (H167R) were employed to expose to Phe under different

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pose a significant threat to ecosystem security and human health. Laccase, a copper-containing oxidase, can oxidize aromatic compounds, potentially enhancing soil organic contaminants degradation and reducing secondary pollution risks in phytoremediation. However, the combined effects of laccase addition and soil temperature on phytoremediation efficiency remain underexplored. This study investigated laccase-assisted phytoremediation of phenanthrene (PHE)-contaminated soil and examined the role of temperature by setting four maize cultivation temperature

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs) are persistent organic pollutants of environmental concern due to their potential impacts on food chain, with plants being particularly vulnerable. While plants can uptake, transport, and transform PAHs, the precise mechanisms underlying their localization and degradation are not fully understood. Here, a cultivation experiment conducted with Panicum miliaceum exposed different concentrations of phenanthrene (PHE). Intermediate PHE degradation compounds were identified via GC-MS analysis, leading to the proposal of a phytodegradation pathway featuring three

Manglicolous filamentous fungi release extracellular lignolytic enzymes that can readily degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The present study emphasizes the role of the extracellular enzyme in phenanthrene degradation by the manglicolous fungus Trichoderma sp. CNSC-2 isolated from the Indian Sundarban mangrove ecosystem. The removal efficiency reached 64.05 ± 0.75 % in 50 mg l-1 phenanthrene-amended mineral salt medium at pH 5.6 after 10 days of incubation. Phenanthrene removal was optimized at different pH, nutrient sources, and Cu2+ concentrations. The degradation significantly

Bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is extremely challenging when they coexist with heavy metals. This constrain has led to adsorption-based techniques that help immobilize the metals and reduce toxicity. However, the adsorbents can also non-selectively bind the organic compounds, which reduces their bioavailability. In this study we developed a surface-engineered organoclay (Arquad® 2HT-75-bentonite-palmitic acid) which enhanced bacterial proliferation and adsorbed cadmium, but elevated phenanthrene bioavailability. Adsorption models of single and binary solutes revealed

Non-ionic surfactants usually are often selected for use in surfactant flushing technology, which is a process that can be used as part of PAH-contaminated soil bioremediation. Phenanthrene (PHE) biodegradation in the presence of polyethoxylate lauryl ether (Brij 35) was studied in two soil/water systems. The natural soil organic matter content (SOM) and the present of Brij 35, both above the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and below the CMC, changed the rate of PHE biodegradation in the presence of Brij 35. PHE biodegradation is different in the two different soil/water systems: PHE > PH

Bacteria that are capable of degrading polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were enumerated by incorporating soil and water dilutions together with fine particles of phenanthrene, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, into an agarose overlayer and pouring the mixture over a mineral salts underlayer. The phenanthrene-degrading bacteria embedded in the overlayer were recognized by a halo of clearing in the opaque phenanthrene layer. Diesel fuel- or creosote-contaminated soil and water that were undergoing bioremediation contained 6 x 10(6) to 100 x 10(6) phenanthrene-degrading bacteria per g and ca. 5

Halogenated derivatives of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as chlorinated PAHs (ClPAHs), are an emerging class of contaminants that are being detected in the environment as well as in wildlife and human populations. Previous studies have shown that chemical substitution of PAHs, including chlorination, may alter the toxicity of parent PAHs; however, whether chlorination affects their endocrine-disrupting potential remains unexplored. In this study, we examined the effects of phenanthrene (Phe), one of the most prevalent PAHs, and its chlorinated congeners, 9-chlorophenanthrene (9

This study compares the physiological and biochemical effects of 3-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), Anthracene (ANT, linear arrangement) and Phenanthrene (PHE, angular arrangement), on microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus acutus. The findings revealed that PHE exerted significant toxic effects on algal growth and photosynthetic parameters, including electron transport rate of PSII [ETR(II)] and quantum yield of PSII [Y(II)], in both species. Additionally, it significantly influenced the regulation of the non-photochemical quenching mechanism [Y(NPQ) and Y(NO)], which was

This study systematically investigated the adsorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (naphthalene (NAP), phenanthrene (PHE), benzo[ghi]perylene (BghiP)) on UV-aged polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics (MPs) in single/coexistent systems, clarifying their competitive adsorption mechanisms via macroscopic experiments and microscopic spectroscopy. UV aging modified PVC's physical structure and enhanced its PAHs adsorption capacity. The adsorption process may be jointly controlled by physical pore filling and interfacial chemical interactions, and the relative contribution of the latt

Phenanthrene (PHE), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), poses significant risks to marine biota, yet its behavioral and physiological effects on fish, particularly on Epinephelus marginatus, remain poorly understood. This study therefore aimed to assess the acute (96 h) effects of PHE exposure (0.1 and 1 mg L⁻¹) on juvenile E. marginatus (n = 15 per treatment) compared to an ethanol control (0.004 %). Behavioral endpoints, oxidative stress biomarkers, plasma cortisol levels, and acetylcholinesterase activity were evaluated in the same individuals. PHE-exposed fish exhibited pronounced beh

Elevated bone resorption resulting from osteoclast (OC) overactivation is a primary factor contributing to osteoporosis progression, suggesting plant-derived antiresorptive agents targeting osteoclast formation and function are effective strategies for managing osteoporosis. To date, no natural phenanthrenes with anti-OC activity have been reported. Herein, a structure-based virtual screening was employed to identify Src kinase binders from a natural phenanthrene library, which revealed dihydrophenanthrene PPb from Pleione bulbocodioides as a potent Src inhibitor. PPb could bind to the kinase

Phenanthrene (Phe), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with low molecular weight, is detected in the environment at high frequency. To study the toxic effects of Phe on the uterine structure and function, female Kunming mice were exposed to Phe (0.05, 0.5, 5 ng/mL) for 270 days by drinking water. Pathological alterations and their action pathways were analyzed using immunohistochemical and biomolecular technology. Phe significantly increased the percentage of blood vessel area, the number of endometrial neutrophils (indicating the occurrence of inflammation), collagen deposition (indicating fib
