Previous studies of social phobia have reported an increased vigilance to social threat cues but also an avoidance of socially relevant stimuli such as eye gaze. The primary aim of this study was to examine attentional mechanisms relevant for perceiving social cues by means of abnormalities in scanning of facial features in patients with social phobia. In two novel experimental paradigms, patients with social phobia and healthy controls matched on age, gender and education were compared regarding their gazing behavior towards facial cues. The first experiment was an emotion classification para

BACKGROUND: Social phobia (SP) is a highly prevalent disorder in Western countries, but is rather rare in Eastern societies. Prevalence rates range from 0.5% in Eastern samples up to 16% in Western studies. Its prevalence in Israel, an Asian state characterized by Western culture, has not yet been studied. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of SP symptoms in a nonclinical sample of Israeli adolescents, to characterize sociodemographic correlates of SP symptoms and to evaluate comorbidity with specific phobia symptoms.
METHODS: Participants included 850 young soldiers from the Is

OBJECTIVES: The following article investigates the extent to which the current status of cognitive behavioral research on the treatment of socially phobic children and adolescents is reflected by the currently used guidelines for psychotherapy.
METHODS: The current literature on research in psychotherapy was systematically reviewed.
RESULTS: The results show the significance of single-setting treatment, of cognitive interventions, and of parental participation in the therapy. The results also show the limitations encountered if the treatment consists only of training social competence skills

Recent studies have suggested an information-processing bias in social phobia (SP). Little is known about the electrophysiological correlates of anxiety in SP. The aim of the present study was to investigate the quantitative electroencephalogram (EEG) in 25 drug-free patients with SP as compared with age- and sex-matched normal controls and to correlate anxiety and depressive symptoms with EEG data. EEG was recorded under vigilance-controlled and resting conditions. The Spielberger State and Trait Anxiety Scale (STAI) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were administered to assess anxiety

Although cognitive theories of anxiety suggest that anxious individuals are characterized by the biased tendency to recall negative experiences with perceived threat, few empirical studies have confirmed this notion. To investigate personal memories associated with threatening experiences, individuals with socio phobia (n=16) and nonanxious individuals (n=17) completed an autobiographical memory-cueing procedure. Participants were presented with 15 social threat words and 15 neutral words, and they recorded the first specific memory that came to mind. Autobiographical memories were coded for s

BACKGROUND: Social phobia is a type of performance and interpersonal anxiety disorder and as such may be associated with sexual dysfunction and avoidance. The aim of the present study was to evaluate sexual function and behavior in patients with social phobia compared with mentally healthy subjects.
METHOD: Eighty subjects participated in the study: 40 consecutive, drug-free outpatients with social phobia (DSM-IV) attending an anxiety disorders clinic between November 1997 and April 1999 and 40 mentally normal controls. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders and the Lie

Blushing is the most prominent symptom of social phobia, and fear perception of visible anxiety symptoms is an important component of cognitive behavioral models of social phobia. However, it is not clear how physiological and psychological aspects of blushing and other somatic symptoms are linked in this disorder. The authors tested whether social situations trigger different facial blood volume changes (blushing) between social phobic persons with and without primary complaint of blushing and control participants. Thirty social phobic persons. 15 of whom were especially concerned about blush

The recent epidemiologic studies report extremely varied rates for social phobia (SP). One of the reasons for this may be the difficulty in diagnosing SP, the boundaries of which are uncertain. A community survey was carried out using doctors with experience in clinical psychiatry as interviewers, and a clinical diagnostic instrument. Two thousand three hundred and fifty-five people (out of the 2,500 randomly selected from the population) living in Sesto Fiorentino, a suburb of Florence, Italy, were interviewed by their own general practitioner, using the MINI plus six additional questions. Social phobia was initially classified with phobic anxiety states and was believed to be quite rare, but it is now gaining due recognition as a widespread and often crippling disorder. The boundaries of social phobia merge into traits of shyness and universal performance anxiety, with symptoms commonly appearing in the teenage years. If left untreated, social phobia is a remarkably persistent condition, leading to potentially lifelong impairment in social development and occupational functioning. It may also give rise to other co-morbid disorders, particularly dysthymia, depression, obsessive-

Social phobia is an extreme fear of being scrutinized by others in social situations that often culminates in avoidance of those situations. Studies have demonstrated marked educational, occupational and social disabilities in patients with social phobia. However, many sufferers do not seek help and are not detected when seeking medical advice for other conditions. The advent of a range of effective treatments, in particular the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, has substantially improved the prognosis in these sufferers, both symptomatically and in terms of quality of life.

Most studies on anxiety including social phobia have measured social adjustment behavior rather than quality of life (i.e. the subjective perception of the patient of his or her illness in relation to different domains). These social adjustment studies have found panic disorders to be more disabling than social phobia. However, quality of life was measured in terms of subjective well-being or satisfaction, and the Zürich study showed that patients with social phobia had less well-being in domains of friends, partner and childhood memories than patients with other anxiety or mood disorders. It

Although social phobia is a prevalent mental disorder in the general population, it has only recently received clinical and public attention and very few and rather general data are currently available on the general and disease-specific impairments, disabilities, handicaps and economic burdens associated with social phobia. This report summarizes findings from a case-control study in which quality of life and other indices of impairment in 65 subjects with social phobia but without significant comorbidity of other psychiatric disorders (pure social phobia) were compared to those in a matched

The past 2 decades have witnessed an upsurge in the interest in anxiety disorders. Much research effort has been dedicated to panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, it is only very recently that we have begun to understand some of the basic principles about the psychopharmacology of social phobia. Drug classes thus far studied include beta-blockers, nonselective and irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and benzodiazepines. Beta blockers appear to be of use in specific social phobias, such as public speaking, whereas they are of little use in generalized social

Patient reports of sleep difficulty and sleep quality were systematically assessed in 30 nondepressed, untreated patients with the generalized subtype of social phobia and 30 sex-matched and age-comparable healthy control subjects. Sleep characteristics of the preceding month were assessed using a standardized, validated instrument: the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Patients with generalized social phobia reported significantly poorer sleep quality, longer sleep latency, more frequent sleep disturbance, and more severe daytime dysfunction. Global PSQI scores did not differ significant
