Biogas is a promising bioenergy alternative to be recovered from waste/wastewater in the context of environmental sustainability and circular economy. However, raw biogas contains various secondary impurities such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, siloxanes, nitrogen oxides (NOx), ammonia, and halogens. Depending on the emission rate of these biogas impurities, the importance of biogas is being hampered for its environmental, health and the detrimental effects possess by the impurities towards the downstream of the biogas users. Biogas impurities can cause different public health concerns

A flue gas originating from a municipal waste incinerator was used as a source of CO(2) for the cultivation of the microalga Chlorella vulgaris, in order to decrease the biomass production costs and to bioremediate CO(2) simultaneously. The utilization of the flue gas containing 10-13% (v/v) CO(2) and 8-10% (v/v) O(2) for the photobioreactor agitation and CO(2) supply was proven to be convenient. The growth rate of algal cultures on the flue gas was even higher when compared with the control culture supplied by a mixture of pure CO(2) and air (11% (v/v) CO(2)). Correspondingly, the CO(2) fixat

Microalgae are used as a source of lipids for the production of biofuels. Most algae produce neutral lipids under stress conditions. Here, lipid accumulation by the unicellular alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was examined during cultivation under iron-limiting conditions. Severe iron stress caused the cells to accumulate a significant amount of lipid, specifically triacylglycerols (TAGs), by compromising the growth. Semi-quantitative measurements by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed an increase in both carbohydrate and lipid content in iron-stressed C. reinhardtii cells comp

This review highlights recent advances in engineering Chlamydomonas reinhardtii for the integrated production of biofuels and high-value bioproducts, emphasizing its potential in a circular bioeconomy. While these two areas are often studied separately, their combined consideration offers a more holistic view of sustainable resource utilization. As a versatile photosynthetic eukaryote, C. reinhardtii efficiently converts light energy and CO₂ into diverse bio-based compounds. It supports three main biofuel pathways: triacylglycerol accumulation under nutrient stress for biodiesel, fermentative

Introduction: Microalgae are photosynthetic cells that can produce third-generation biofuels and other commercial compounds. Microalgal growth is influenced by two main parameters: light intensity and carbon dioxide concentration, which represent the energy and carbon source, respectively. For photosynthesis, the optimum values of abiotic factors vary among species. Methods: In this study, the microalga Chlorella sorokiniana was isolated from a freshwater lake. It was identified using molecular analysis of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer. A single-factor design of experiments in 250-

Membrane technology has rapidly gained popularity in wastewater treatment due to its cost-effectiveness, environmentally friendly tools, and elevated productivity. Although membrane performance in wastewater treatment has been reviewed in several past studies, the key techniques for improving membrane performance, as well as their challenges, and solutions associated with the membrane process, were not sufficiently highlighted in those studies. Also, very few studies have addressed hybrid techniques to improve membrane performance. The present review aims to fill those gaps and achieve public

This study assessed the recovery of natural pigments (phycobiliproteins) and bioenergy (biogas) from microalgae grown in wastewater. A consortium of microalgae, mainly composed by Nostoc, Phormidium, and Geitlerinema, known to have high phycobiliproteins content, was grown in photobioreactors. The growth medium was composed by secondary effluent from a high rate algal pond (HRAP) along with the anaerobic digestion centrate, which aimed to enhance the N/P ratio, given the lack of nutrients in the secondary effluent. Additionally, the centrate is still a challenging anaerobic digestion residue s

Microbial cell factories promise sustainable biomanufacturing, yet balancing cellular growth and product synthesis remains a fundamental productivity bottleneck. While traditional static metabolic engineering fails to precisely orchestrate metabolic flux across temporal and spatial dimensions, optogenetic approaches offer unprecedented spatiotemporal control and programmability. This study developed an integrated framework combining dual-mode optogenetic switches with a machine learning-guided optimization strategy to achieve precise temporal orchestration of metabolic pathways. Using Saccharo

Cyanobacteria have attracted growing interest as photosynthetic cell factories for the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into renewable chemicals because they directly use solar energy and inorganic carbon under mild aqueous conditions. Recent advances in chassis development, genome engineering, carbon-partition control, and photobioreactor design have expanded the scope of cyanobacterial CO2-to-chemical biomanufacturing. Among the reported diols, 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO), 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO), and 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) represent distinct development cases. In particular, 1,3-PDO pro

Cadmium (Cd) is a persistent, non-essential toxic metal that threatens aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, agricultural productivity, and food safety. Cyanobacteria offer a promising platform for Cd bioremediation by combining photoautotrophic growth with extracellular metal binding, membrane transport, intracellular sequestration, thiol-mediated detoxification, and redox regulation. This review develops an integrated framework for engineering cyanobacterial resilience to Cd stress, linking Cd2+ speciation and bioavailability with cellular uptake, detoxification, and biomass-associated metal r

Methanotroph-microalgae cocultures offer a promising bioprocess platform for methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) valorisation and have been proposed for sustainable single-cell protein (SCP) production. In coculture, the thermoacidophilic methanotroph Methylacidiphilum sp. RTK17.1 can benefit from oxygen supplied by the extremophilic microalga Galdieria sp. RTK37.1 under low-O₂ conditions, enhancing growth and methane oxidation. However, oxygen availability is a critical factor that can rapidly become limiting and is dependent on the relative abundance of each coculture partner. Here, we in

Rising atmospheric CO₂ levels require innovative strategies to increase carbon sequestration. Bacteria-algae interactions, as pivotal yet underexplored drivers of marine and freshwater carbon sinks, involve multiple mechanisms that amplify CO₂ fixation and long-term storage. This review systematically describes the synergistic effects of bacteria-algae consortia spanning both microalgae (e.g., Chlorella vulgaris and Phaeodactylum tricornutum) and macroalgae (e.g., Macrocystis and Laminaria) on carbon sequestration. These effects include (1) molecular-level regulation (e.g., signal transduction

Plastic pollution is among this century's defining environmental problems, and aquatic systems carry a disproportionate share. As polymers fragment into microplastics and nanoplastics they disperse through rivers, lakes and oceans, harming organisms and entering food webs. Algae have attracted growing attention as a biological complement to physical and chemical clean-up. This review synthesises peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2026 on interactions between plastics and freshwater and marine algae. We examine eukaryotic microalgae from freshwater (Chlorella, Scenedesmus, Coccomy

To address the dual environmental challenges of CO2 emissions and reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate in the steel industry, this study developed an integrated microalgae-based treatment strategy. The strategy consisted of two sequential phases, including laboratory-scale screening of microalgal strains and subsequent pilot-scale validation under real industrial conditions. Eight microalgal strains were initially evaluated using RO concentrate and simulated flue gas (20 % CO2), among which Chlorella LJ34 exhibited superior performance in biomass production (1.26 g/L dry weight), nutrient removal

Algae based wastewater treatment has been considered as the most promising win-win strategy for nutrients removal and biomass accumulation. However, the poor linking between traditional wastewater treatment and algal cultivation limits the achievement of this goal. In this study, a novel combination of Fenton oxidation and algal cultivation (CFOAC) system was investigated for the treatment of chicken farm flushing wastewater (CFFW). Fenton oxidation (FO) was adopted to reduce the excessive ammonia nitrogen, which might inhibit the algal growth. The results showed that single FO pretreatment re

Effluents generated in the food and beverage industry typically contain elevated concentrations of organic carbon sources and inorganic nutrients, representing a significant environmental burden as global food demand continues to rise. Owing to their capacity to effectively assimilate carbon and nutrients while simultaneously generating biomass with potential valorization pathways, Chlorella spp. offers a dual benefit of contaminant removal and resource recovery. However, existing algal studies remain predominantly at the laboratory scale, and their competitive advantages have not been demonst
