Primate breeding season: photoperiodic regulation in captive Lemur catta.

Under natural light in Portland, Oreg., captive ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) experience a breeding season that differs by nearly half a year from the season in Madagascar. A series of experimental day length changes from 1971 to 1974 demonstrated the ability of both temperate and tropical photoperiod cycles to induce estrous cycles in quiescent animals. After photoperiodic activation, most impregnated females failed to resume estrous cycles even after infant separations unless they received additional photoperiod changes. Unimpregnated females, on the other hand, showed no significant decl

Decoding the pituitary response to photoperiod in geese: Central role in regulating reproduction.

Photoperiodic regulation is a key technique in modern poultry farming. In geese, however, the molecular pathways by which the pituitary gland transduces photoperiodic signals remain incompletely understood. Therefore, this study aimed to identify key factors by analyzing the pituitary transcriptome of female Yangzhou geese subjected to a short photoperiod and a long photoperiod. RNA-seq analysis showed that the prolactin (PRL) gene was the most highly expressed among all DEGs in the pituitary, and its dynamic expression pattern was closely associated with reproductive status. Furthermore, the

Effects of fasting, temperature, and photoperiod on preproghrelin mRNA expression in Chinese perch.

Preproghrelin, a gut/brain peptide, plays an important role in the regulation of food intake and energy homeostasis in teleost and mammals. In the present study, we obtained the full-length preproghrelin cDNA in Chinese perch. The preproghrelin messenger RNA (mRNA) tissue expression showed that level was much higher in stomach and pituitary than in other tissues. The fasting study showed, after gastric emptying (3-6 h), short-term fasting (6-12 h) increased preproghrelin expression in the stomach. While in the pituitary, fasting reduced preproghrelin expression at 1, 3, 12, and 48 h, presentin

Photoperiod-induced apoptosis in the male genital tract epithelia of the golden hamster.

The aim of this study was to identify some details of the changes induced by a short-day light regime (8:16 light:dark) on the male genital tract and accessory sex glands of the golden hamster Mesocricetus auratus. We principally examined the presence of apoptotic cells in the epithelium from different regions of the epididymis, seminal vesicles, prostate and coagulating gland. We detected an increase in the percentage of apoptotic cells in situ using the TUNEL technique in animals that were maintained for 6, 8 or 12 weeks in a short photoperiod. That those cells were indeed undergoing apoptos

Photoperiod and melatonin affect testicular growth in the marsh rice rat (Oryzomys palustris).

Reproduction in rice rats is subject to photoperiodic control and the pineal gland mediates this effect. We examined the effects of the pineal gland hormone melatonin on testicular weight when administered via implants, injections, and infusions. Testicular weight was modified by photoperiod and the size of the melatonin implant. Twenty-millimeter implants suppressed testicular weight in rice rats housed on 12- and 16-hr photoperiods, while those housed on a 14-hr photoperiod were more sensitive to melatonin; in these animals 10- and 20-mm implants inhibited testicular weight. Melatonin implan

Influence of photoperiod on egg production of cat fleas (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) infesting cats.

Photoperiod affected the production of cat flea eggs by cats infested with cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché). Cat flea eggs have a smooth chorion and do not adhere to the host. About 60% of fluorescing eggs placed in the pelage were recovered in collecting trays underneath the host in 2 h. An average of 87.7 eggs per cat was laid during the last 8 h of the scotophase compared with 49.9 and 59.1 eggs during the other 8-h periods. Significant variation in the number of eggs collected daily existed among the six cats. The activity budgets were similar for all the cats with the maximum slee

Photoperiod and UV-B orchestrate ICR1 to control seed isoflavonoid accumulation in soybean.

Being sessile, plants optimize their physiological and metabolic processes in response to ambient environmental cues, such as light. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying environmental regulation of seed isoflavonoid biosynthesis in soybean remain largely elusive. Here, our genome-wide association study identifies isoflavone content regulator 1 (ICR1), encoding a regulator of chromosome condensation (RCC1) family protein, as a positive regulator of seed isoflavonoid accumulation in soybean. The CONSTANS (CO) homolog GmCOL2b directly suppresses ICR1 transcription by binding to a CORE cis

Hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis response to photoperiod changes in female guanacos (Lama guanicoe).

The guanaco, a wild South American camelid, is renowned for its remarkable resilience to extreme conditions. Despite this, little is known about how reproductive hormones in female camelids are influenced during their seasonal breeding period, which occurs during long photoperiod. To explore this, the study investigated the response of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in female guanacos during short days (10L:14D; July) and long days (16L:8D; December) in the Mediterranean ecosystem (33°38'28″S, 70°34'27″W). Blood samples from 14 adult animals were collected, and measurements of melaton

Relationship between photoperiod and hospital admissions for mania in New South Wales, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Causes for a seasonal impact on admissions for mania remain to be clarified. We examined the impact of photoperiod, rate of change of photoperiod and hours of sunshine on admissions over an extended period. METHODS: Monthly admission data to NSW psychiatric hospitals for more than twenty thousand patients admitted for mania over a fifteen-year period were correlated with photoperiod and sunshine changes. RESULTS: While the peak in admissions occurred in spring, the shift in admissions being under-represented to being precipitously over-represented corresponded with the photoperio

Continuous melatonin attenuates the regressing activities of short photoperiod in male golden hamsters.

Golden hamsters reproduce in a limited time of a year. Their sexual activities are active in summer but inactive in winter during which day length does not exceed night time and environmental conditions are severe to them. The reproductive activities are determined by the length of light in a day (photoperiod). Melatonin is synthesized and secreted only at night time from the pineal gland. Duration of elevated melatonin is longer in winter than summer, resulting in gonadal regression. The present study aimed at the influences of continuous melatonin treatments impinging on the gonadal function

Photoperiod-dependent changes in melatonin synthesis in the turkey pineal gland and retina.

The effect of photoperiod on melatonin content and the activity of the melatonin-synthesizing enzymes, namely, serotonin N-acetyltransferase (AANAT) and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase, were investigated in the pineal gland and retina of turkeys. The birds were adapted to 3 different lighting conditions: 16L:8D (long photoperiod), 12L:12D (regular photoperiod), and 8L:16D (short photoperiod). Pineal, retinal, and plasma melatonin concentrations oscillated with a robust diurnal rhythm, with high values during darkness. The duration of elevated nocturnal melatonin levels in the turkey pineal g

Fos-related antigen 2 (Fra-2) memorizes photoperiod in the rat pineal gland.

As the physiological role of fos-related antigen-2 (Fra-2) is largely unknown and since the pineal plays an important role in the photoperiodic control of the body, we have tested the hypothesis that Fra-2 expression is photoperiod-dependent and may be involved in imprinting photoperiod on the pineal gland and the body as a whole. To this end, we have investigated Fra-2 mRNA expression and Fra-2 protein expression under various light/dark (LD) cycles. A clear nocturnal increase occurs for both monitored parameters under all photoperiodic conditions studied. The level of Fra-2 protein expressio

Effects of photoperiod on pineal melatonin in the marsh rice rat (Oryzomys palustris).

Pineal melatonin content was examined under four different photoperiods (10L:14D, 12L:12D, 14L:10D, and 16L:8D) in adult female rice rats (Experiment 1). Pineal melatonin was basal during the light and increased beginning 1 hr after lights off. Within 2 hr after lights off, melatonin increased to levels that were maintained throughout the dark period. In all but one photoperiod (10L:14D), melatonin remained elevated prior to light onset and decreased markedly within one hour after lights on. In addition, the duration of pineal melatonin was inversely related to the length of the photoperiod. I

The free-running property of circadian clocks is needed to tolerate changing photoperiods.

A defining feature of circadian rhythms is an internal oscillator that is self-sustaining in constant conditions, but the utility of this free-running property is not clear.1 In cyanobacteria, two alternative timing systems are found: a canonical circadian clock and an hourglass-like system incapable of free-running.2 By swapping genetic elements, we engineer a pathway to convert a circadian clock into an hourglass. We show that the performance of these systems is similar in a balanced light-dark cycle, but the hourglass shows dysregulated transcription in long photoperiod days and fails to pr

Analysis of reproductive hormones and transcriptomics in the hypothalamus and pituitary under different photoperiods.

This investigation aimed to use transcriptome analysis to explore the key genes and signaling pathways through which photoperiod impacts reproductive hormone secretion in roosters. 240 forty-two-day-old Chahua No.2 roosters were randomly assigned to four groups: simulated natural light (Ⅰ), 12L:12D (Ⅱ), 16L:8D (Ⅲ), and 20L:4D (Ⅳ), with 6 replicates per group and 10 roosters in each replicate. Blood samples were collected at 91 days and 140 days after hatching to measure the levels of various reproductive hormones. Subsequently, the two groups with the most significant differences in reproducti

OsCRY2 and OsFBO10 co-regulate photomorphogenesis and photoperiodic flowering in indica rice.

Cryptochromes (CRYs) are a class of photoreceptors that perceive blue/ultraviolet-A light of the visible spectrum to mediate a vast number of physiological responses in bacteria, fungi, animals and plants. In the present study, we have characterized OsCRY2 in a photoperiod sensitive indica variety, Basmati 370, by generating and analyzing overexpression (OE) and knock-down (KD) transgenic lines. The OsCRY2OE lines displayed dwarfism as shown in their reduced plant height and leaf length, attributed largely by an overall reduction in their cell size. The OsCRY2OE lines flowered significantly ea

Photoperiodic regulation of avian physiology: From external coincidence to seasonal reproduction.

Seasonal cycles of environmental cues generate variation in the timing of life-history transition events across taxa. It is through the entrainment of internal, endogenous rhythms of organisms to these external, exogenous rhythms in environment, such as cycling temperature and daylight, by which organisms can regulate and time life history transitions. Here, we review the current understanding of how photoperiod both stimulates and terminates seasonal reproduction in birds. The review describes the role of external coincidence timing, the process by which photoperiod is proposed to stimulate r

Spinal relay neurons for central control of autonomic pathways in a photoperiodic rodent.

Location and distribution of spinal sympathetic preganglionic neurons projecting to the superior cervical ganglion were investigated in a rodent model organism for photoperiodic regulation, the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus). Upon unilateral injection of Fluoro-Gold into the superior cervical ganglia, retrograde neuronal tracing demonstrated labeled neurons ipsilateral to the injection site. They were seen in spinal segments C8 to Th5 of which the segments Th1 to Th3 contained about 98% of the labeled cells. Neurons were found in the spinal cord predominantly in the intermediolateral n
