Stomatal Decoupling From Photosynthesis Under High Temperatures Is Consistent With Stomatal Optimisation.

Stomatal pores on plant leaves regulate the gain of carbon through photosynthesis and the loss of water through transpiration. Through their responses to environmental conditions, stomata can constrain plant productivity and transpiration fluxes, exerting a strong control on climate feedbacks over land. Although mechanistic modelling of stomata remains a challenge, semi-empirical and optimisation models have been successfully applied to improve the simulation of land-atmosphere fluxes of water and carbon. Optimisation approaches assume that some aspect of plant function, such as photosynthesis

Carbon quantum dots in plant photosynthesis: from material design to agricultural performance.

Sustainable agricultural intensification requires nanomaterials that regulate plant physiology while improving resource-use efficiency and stress resilience. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have emerged as photosynthetic nano-regulators because their optical and electronic properties, surface functionality, dispersibility, and compositional flexibility enable control over plant uptake and activity. This review develops a structure-function-performance framework linking CQD physicochemical characteristics, including particle size, surface chemistry, optical properties, and heteroatom doping, with tr

Lactic acid photosynthesis via C-C cross-coupling over atomically dispersed Ba.

Photocatalytic carbon-carbon coupling offers a route for converting plastic-derived chemicals into valuable multi-carbon products, yet uncontrolled coupling of intermediate limits efficiency and selectivity. Here, we report atomically dispersed barium species on titanium dioxide that act as frustrated Lewis pairs, enabling efficient and selective generation intermediates during the co-oxidation of ethylene glycol and methanol toward lactic acid. The barium species create interstitial states near the Fermi level, enhancing charge separation and surface redox activity. Meanwhile, barium sites pr

Anthraquinone-Based Metal-Organic Framework with Proton Transfer for Enhanced H2O2 Photosynthesis.

Photocatalytic oxygen reduction offers a green route to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production, yet practical efficiency is often limited by insufficient visible-light harvesting, fast charge recombination, and the kinetic mismatch between proton supply and interfacial electron transfer. Inspired by the industrial anthraquinone (AQ) redox cycle, we report the in situ embedding of an anthraquinone unit into a zirconium-based metal-organic framework (Zr-AQ-MOF) to create a highly efficient and stable photocatalyst for H2O2 synthesis. Comprehensive characterization reveals that the AQ centers extend

Survival without photosynthesis: physiological characterization of long-lived albino beech (Fagus sylvatica).

Albinism is typically lethal in autotrophic plants due to the absence of photosynthetic pigments and functioning chloroplasts. Yet, rare exceptions occur where achlorophyllous individuals persist in natural ecosystems. We investigated the physiological, anatomical and isotopic characteristics of naturally occurring albino European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) trees in the Moravian Karst, Czechia. One albino individual, estimated to be ~30 years old, represents an unprecedented case of long-term survival without photosynthesis in a woody angiosperm. Using a multi-parameter approach-including stab

Ethylene Response Factor109 Attunes Immunity, Photosynthesis, and Iron Homeostasis in Arabidopsis Leaves.

Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient element for all organisms including plants. Chlorosis of young leaves is a common symptom of Fe deficiency, reducing the efficiency of photosynthesis, and, ultimately, crop yield. Previous research revealed strong responsiveness of the putative key transcription factor ERF109 to the Fe regime. To elucidate the possible role of ERF109 in leaf Fe homeostasis and photosynthesis, we subjected Arabidopsis thaliana erf109 knockout lines and Col-0 wild-type plants to transcriptome profiling via RNA-seq. The transcriptome profile of Fe-sufficient erf109 leaves s

Very high CO2 concentrations inhibit photosynthesis and trigger transcriptomic stress responses in cyanobacteria.

CO[Formula: see text] concentrations above air level (0.04%) are beneficial for the growth of cyanobacteria. However, very high CO[Formula: see text] levels inhibit growth, limiting the usability of cyanobacteria for carbon capture and biotechnological applications. The transcriptomic changes in the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 were investigated at varying growth rates governed by different gas-phase CO[Formula: see text] concentrations, ranging from limiting (0.04%) to optimal (4% and 8%) to inhibitory high (30%). Compared to optimal CO[Formula: see text] concentrations, large di

Harnessing the Power of Photosynthesis: from Current Engineering Strategies to Cell Factory Applications.

Photosynthesis has garnered significant interest due to its potential for retrofitting and its intrinsic enzyme-mediated metabolic processes, which can convert carbon dioxide (CO2) into biomass powered by solar energy. However, natural photosynthesis is limited by factors such as low photosynthetic efficiency and constraints on the range of output products. To address these issues, researchers have developed various strategies for designing and engineering photosynthetic systems. These strategies include nanomaterial-assisted approaches to enhance light absorption and accelerate electron trans

Guard cell-specific glycine decarboxylase manipulation affects Arabidopsis photosynthesis, growth and stomatal behavior.

Photorespiration is a mandatory metabolic repair shunt of carbon fixation by the Calvin-Benson cycle in oxygenic phototrophs. Its extent depends mainly on the CO2 : O2 ratio in chloroplasts, which is regulated via stomatal movements. Despite a comprehensive understanding of the role of photorespiration in mesophyll cells, its role in guard cells (GC) is unknown. Therefore, a key enzyme of photorespiration, glycine decarboxylase (GDC), was specifically manipulated by varying glycine decarboxylase H-protein (GDC-H) expression in Arabidopsis GC. Multiple approaches were used to analyze the transg

3D N-heterocyclic covalent organic frameworks for urea photosynthesis from NH3 and CO2.

Artificial photosynthesis of urea from NH3 and CO2 seems to remain still essentially unexplored. Herein, three isomorphic three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks with twofold interpenetrated ffc topology are functionalized by benzene, pyrazine, and tetrazine active moieties, respectively. A series of experiment results disclose the gradually enhanced conductivity, light-harvesting capacity, photogenerated carrier separation efficiency, and co-adsorption capacity towards NH3 and CO2 in the order of benzene-, pyrazine-, and tetrazine-containing framework. This in turn endows tetrazine-cont

Chloroplastic Aspartyl-tRNA Synthetase Is Required for Chloroplast Development, Photosynthesis and Photorespiratory Metabolism.

Photorespiration is a complex metabolic process linked to primary plant metabolism and influenced by environmental factors, yet its regulation remains poorly understood. In this study, we identified the asprs3-1 mutant, which displays a photorespiratory phenotype with leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, and diminished photosynthesis under ambient CO2, but normal growth under elevated CO2 conditions. Map-based cloning and genetic complementation identified AspRS3 as the mutant gene, encoding an aspartyl-tRNA synthetase. AspRS3 is localised in both chloroplasts and mitochondria, with the chloroplast

Photosynthesis of silver nanoparticles embedded paper for sensing mercury presence in environmental water.

Heavy metals released by anthropogenic activities are extremely toxic to animals and plants due to their bioaccumulative and persistent environmental presence. In the current study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized utilizing eco-friendly processes, and their potential in colorimetric Hg2+ ion sensing in environmental samples was examined. An aqueous extract of Hemidesmus indicus root (Sarsaparilla Root, ISR) rapidly converts silver ions into AgNPs within 5 min of exposure to sunlight. Transmission electron microscopy confirms that ISR-AgNPs are spherical, ranging from 15 to 35 nm.

4CzIPN-tBu-Catalyzed Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer for Photosynthesis of Phosphorylated N-Heteroaromatics.

2,4,5,6-Tetrakis(3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazol-9-yl)isophthalonitrile (4CzIPN-tBu) was developed as a photocatalyst for the phosphorus-radical-initiated cascade cyclization reaction of isocyanides. By using 4CzIPN-tBu as catalyst, we developed a visible-light-induced proton-coupled electron transfer strategy for the generation of phosphorus-centered radicals, via which a wide range of phosphorylated phenanthridines, quinolines, and benzothiazoles were successfully constructed.

Oxygenic photosynthesis: EPR study of photosynthetic electron transport and oxygen-exchange, an overview.

In this review, we consider the applications of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) methods to the study of the relationships between the electron transport and oxygen-exchange processes in photosynthetic systems of oxygenic type. One of the purposes of this article is to encourage scientists to use the advantageous EPR oximetry approaches to study oxygen-related electron transport processes in photosynthetic systems. The structural organization of the photosynthetic electron transfer chain and the EPR approaches to the measurements of molecular oxygen (O2) with O2-sensitive species (nitroxi

Cotton photosynthesis-related PSAK1 protein is involved in plant response to aphid attack.

It is believed that hundreds of genes, including photosynthesis-related genes, are typically involved in plant response to aphid feeding. Up to now, however, it is little known on the relationship between the photosynthesis-related genes and plant response to herbivores. In this study, we identified a cotton photosynthesis-related gene (GhPSAK1) which belongs to PSI-PSAK family and encodes a putative protein of 162 amino acids. RT-PCR analysis revealed that GhPSAK1 transcripts in leaves were increased at 12-24 h, but decreased at 48-72 h after cotton aphid attack or wounding induction. Choice

The Photosynthesis and Respiration Efficiency of Callitriche cophocarpa Sendtn. Under the Stress of Hexavalent Chromium.

The lack of the literature data on the actual CO2 assimilation and dissimilation in aquatic plants under conditions of high chromium concentrations prompted this study to determine the efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus and the actual rates of photosynthesis and respiration in Callitriche cophocarpa plants under chromium stress conditions. We hypothesized that C. cophocarpa would need to display an efficient acclimation mechanism that allows for efficient carboxylation and dark respiration in the presence of Cr(VI) ions. Shoots of C. cophocarpa plants were cultured in the control mediu

Rapid dehydration drives a nondiffusional drop in C3 photosynthesis that aligns with phosphate limitation.

Drought is an abnormally prolonged water deficit posing major challenges to plants. Stomatal closure has long been considered the primary factor limiting photosynthesis during the early stages of drought. However, emerging evidence suggests that nonstomatal limitation may also arise, particularly under rapid dehydration. We hypothesised that under rapid dehydration, photosynthesis is constrained by an impeded supply of CO2 to the chloroplasts. To test this, we conducted an innovative experiment inducing rapid but controlled dehydration in hydroponically grown wheat and sunflower. We measured w
