Physical capacity provides a link between disease or impairment and limitations in activity; in multiple sclerosis (MS), it is limited and decreased. The aim of this study was to study the effects of exercise and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex area in MS patients with fatigue and an impaired gait ability. A cross-over design was carried out on fifteen patients with two disability associations, but three were excluded. Before and after each intervention, the 6 min walk test (6MWT) and the 2 min walk test (2MWT) were used to assess walki

Several lines of evidence have consistently indicated that physical exercise has antidepressant effects by improving hippocampal function, although the signaling pathways underpinning these responses are not well established. Therefore, this study investigated the role of mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) and fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 (FNDC5)/irisin signaling in the antidepressant-like effect of physical exercise. We showed that physical exercise (treadmill running - 45 min/day/5 days/week for 4 weeks) produced an antidepressant-like effect as indicated

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has shown promising effects on postural control in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). However, the characteristics of the stimulation, such as the specific cortical area targeted and combination with exercise, seem to influence the tDCS effects. Therefore, analyzing these factors is essential for identifying key characteristics and optimizing rehabilitation protocols for postural control in PD.We aimed to analyze the efficacy of tDCS over the primary motor (M1) and pre-frontal cortices (PFC) combined with aerobic exercise on postural control

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an effective treatment for neuropathic pain, but its effect on chronic muscle pain is unclear. We designed this study to test the effect of SCS in an animal model of noninflammatory muscle pain.
METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with an epidural SCS lead on the upper lumbar spinal cord (L3-L4) under isoflurane anesthesia (4%). Ten days after implantation, chronic muscle pain was induced by giving 2 injections of pH 4 saline into the left gastrocnemius muscle, 5 days apart. In experiment 1, SCS was delivered daily (6-hour duration/day

BACKGROUND: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains various growth factors and inflammatory regulators, which can effectively reduce inflammation in joints and promote tissue repair. Multiple studies have proved its effectiveness in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) are non-invasive and safe physical therapy methods for KOA. This study is the first to propose the treatment of KOA with physical stimulation after PRP treatment, and to observe the clinical efficacy of the treatment method.

BACKGROUND: Lack of physical activity is an important risk factor for overweight, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other chronic conditions. In the Netherlands, ethnic minority groups are generally less physically active and rate their own health poorer compared to ethnic Dutch. This applies in particular to women. For this reason women from ethnic minority groups are an important target group for interventions to promote physical activity. In the Netherlands, an exercise referral program ("Exercise on Prescription") seems successful in reaching women from ethnic minority groups, in particu

Methyl-xanthines and adrenergic stimulants, such as caffeine and synephrine, are commonly added to food supplements due to their stimulating and thermogenic effects. In addition, the abusive consumption of food supplements with ergogenic and aesthetic purposes has been observed worldwide. This work describes the study of caffeine, p-synephrine, hordenine, octopamine, tyramine, ephedrine and salicin as stimulants in dietary supplements marketed in Brazil for weight loss and physical fitness claims. A total of 94 different products were acquired from 30 Brazilian websites. Thus, the sampling of

Physical inactivity depresses glycemic control, an impairment that can be prevented with exercise. We investigated whether electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) with blood flow restriction (BFR) could similarly prevent the impairments in glycemic control associated with physical inactivity and whether this was effective for attenuating the loss of physical function after inactivity. Thirty-two participants underwent 1 week of step reduction (≤ 3000 steps/day) randomized to either no intervention (Control), twice daily EMS, or twice daily EMS with BFR (EMS + BFR). Oral glucose tolerance and tests

Abnormal cortical oscillations are markers of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can modulate brain oscillations and possibly impact on behaviour. Mapping of cortical activity (prevalent oscillatory frequency and topographic scalp distribution) may provide a personalized neurotherapeutic target and guide non-invasive brain stimulation. This is a cross-over, double blinded, randomized trial. Electroencephalogram (EEG) from participants with PD referred to Specialist Clinic, University Hospital, were recorded. TACS frequency and electrode position were

Patients with sensory ataxic hemiparesis face a poorer recovery prognosis than those with pure motor deficits. We explored the feasibility and efficacy of repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation (rPMS) combined with physical therapy (PT) for improving upper extremity (UE) function in early acute stroke survivors. Eighteen Participants were randomized to rPMS group (20 min rPMS + 20 min PT) or conventional PT group (40 min PT). Outcomes (the Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT), the UE motor section of the Fugl-Meyer Motor Assessment Scale (FMA-UE), and the Thumb Localizing Test (TLT)) were prima
