Physiology of sleep and wakefulness as it relates to the physiology of epilepsy.

This paper reviews the present knowledge about the cellular origins of vigilance states (wakefulness and slow-wave sleep) from the perspective of their involvement in the triggering of epileptic seizures. The data stem from intracellular recordings (most of them dual impalements of pairs of neurons and glia), extracellular ionic concentrations (mainly K and Ca ) and simultaneous intracortical field potentials from the cortex of cats. These data were corroborated with recordings from naturally sleeping animals and humans. It is shown that sleep is dominated by a cortically generated slow (<1 Hz

Intestinal bacteria. The role they play in normal physiology, pathologic physiology, and infection.

Anaerobic bacteria predominate in the normal human fecal flora, out-numbering aerobes at least 100 to one. The two most prevalent organisms are Bacteroides fragilis and Bifidobacterium. Ileostomy flora is, on the other hand, chiefly aerobic and the total count is lower (10(8) per ml of fluid, compared to 10(10) per gram for feces). In normal people, small bowel bacterial counts are generally 10(5) per ml or less. The upper small bowel consists primarily of Gram-positive aerobes in small numbers. In the terminal ileum, counts are higher and aerobes and anaerobes are present in equal numbers. In

Mid-term outcomes of cor triatriatum repair: comparison of biventricular physiology and univentricular physiology.

BACKGROUND: Cor triatriatum is the rarest of all congenital cardiac diseases, accounting for 0.1-0.4% of congenital heart diseases. Atrial septal defect is the most common associated defect; however, cor triatriatum is sometimes associated with univentricular heart. METHODS: This single-centre retrospective study involved all patients who underwent the repair of cor triatriatum at Kobe Children's Hospital between 2000 and 2020. Twenty-four patients were required surgery. We conducted a survey of survival rate, early and late pulmonary vein stenosis in each group. RESULTS: The survival rate o

Physiology of invasive Plasmodium merozoites.

Malaria, a life-threatening disease caused by Plasmodium parasites, relies on a specialized stage, the merozoite to invade red blood cells and multiply in the bloodstream. While much research has focused on the molecular interactions between merozoite and host cell surface, invasion is a complex process that also requires the parasite to move actively, sense its environment, and respond to signals such as changes in ions or contact with the red blood cell. These cues trigger precise biological responses, including the secretion of specialized organelles and activation of gliding motility, enab

Retinal physiology in metabolic syndrome.

Obesity is increasingly recognized not only for its systemic health impacts but also for its association with visual defects and eye diseases. This chapter explores the relationship between obesity and ocular health, highlighting the mechanisms by which metabolic dysregulation influences visual outcomes. Obesity exacerbates risk factors such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance, which compromise retinal and optic nerve health. Conditions like diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma are discussed in the context of obesity-related inflammation, oxida

Physiology of lower gastrointestinal tract.

BACKGROUND: The lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract, formed from the midgut and hindgut, encompasses the colon, rectum and anal canal. AIM: The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the lower GI tract. METHODS: Literature review on anatomy and physiology of the lower GI tract, including normal motility and phases of defecation. It derives its blood supply from the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries while it is innervated by the extrinsic autonomic (the thoracolumbar and sacral nerves) and the intrinsic enteric nervous system. The colon has four la

Physiology of Dystonia: Animal Studies.

Dystonia is currently ranked as the third most prevalent motor disorder. It is typically characterized by involuntary muscle over- or co-contractions that can cause painful abnormal postures and jerky movements. Dystonia is a heterogenous disorder-across patients, dystonic symptoms vary in their severity, body distribution, temporal pattern, onset, and progression. There are also a growing number of genes that are associated with hereditary dystonia. In addition, multiple brain regions are associated with dystonic symptoms in both genetic and sporadic forms of the disease. The heterogeneity of

Pain in Pets: Beyond Physiology.

Animals do not speak a language humans understand, making it easy to believe that they do not experience pain the way humans do. Despite data affirming that companion animals can and do experience pain much as do humans, there remains a gap between companion animal acute pain management knowledge and its execution. Companion animal pain is not simply a physiological issue. Veterinary clinicians can and should embrace the foundational principles of clinical bioethics-respect for autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, and justice-translated from human medicine for the benefit of their patients.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae physiology and pathogenesis.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is an obligate human pathogen that is the cause of the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea. Recently, there has been a surge in gonorrhoea cases that has been exacerbated by the rapid rise in gonococcal multidrug resistance to all useful antimicrobials resulting in this organism becoming a significant public health burden. Therefore, there is a clear and present need to understand the organism's biology through its physiology and pathogenesis to help develop new intervention strategies. The gonococcus initially colonises and adheres to host mucosal surfaces utilising

Physiology-Based Treatment of Myoclonus.

Myoclonus can cause significant disability for patients. Myoclonus has a strikingly diverse array of underlying etiologies, clinical presentations, and pathophysiological mechanisms. Treatment of myoclonus is vital to improving the quality of life of patients with these disorders. The optimal treatment strategy for myoclonus is best determined based upon careful evaluation and consideration of the underlying etiology and neurophysiological classification. Electrophysiological testing including EEG (electroencephalogram) and EMG (electromyogram) data is helpful in determining the neurophysiolog

Physiology of cerebrospinal fluid circulation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article describes the physiology of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). We review current evidence and new concepts relating to CSF physiology with respect to CSF secretion, circulation and resorption and we highlight key pathophysiological associations including the relationship between CSF and intracranial pressure. RECENT FINDINGS: CSF secretion occurs primarily via the choroid plexus. Various transport mechanisms facilitate CSF secretion but the role Aquaporins play in this process is a recent discovery and an area of ongoing research. CSF circulation is a dynamic process b

[Eosinophilic granulocytes-Physiology and pathophysiology].

Eosinophilic granulocytes are a subpopulation of leucocytes and part of the innate immune cell pool. Additionally, they have homeostatic functions in different tissues. Classically, an increased number of eosinophils is associated with allergies and parasitic infections; however, eosinophilia can also be found in vasculitides and malignant tumors. The most important controlling factors of eosinophils are the cytokine interleukin 5 and eotaxins. Eosinophils are able to produce a broad range of signalling factors and toxic proteins, which are stored in cytoplasmic granules and can be quickly and

Activin A in Mammalian Physiology.

Activins are dimeric glycoproteins belonging to the transforming growth factor beta superfamily and resulting from the assembly of two beta subunits, which may also be combined with alpha subunits to form inhibins. Activins were discovered in 1986 following the isolation of inhibins from porcine follicular fluid, and were characterized as ovarian hormones that stimulate follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) release by the pituitary gland. In particular, activin A was shown to be the isoform of greater physiological importance in humans. The current understanding of activin A surpasses the reprodu
