We report a case of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) in the cerebral convexity, and present characteristic radiological and surgical findings to determine its origin. The patient was a 59-year-old man with mental dullness and mild gait disturbance. CT scan and MR images showed a highly enhanced large mass lesion mimicking a meningioma in the left parietal convexity. However, neither dural enhancement nor tail sign indicative of meningioma was observed. Angiography showed prominent feedings from branches of the internal carotid and basilar arteries rather than the external carotid artery. For this

The existence of a previously unrecognized subarachnoid lymphatic-like membrane (SLYM) was reported in a recent study. SLYM is described as an intermediate leptomeningeal layer between the arachnoid and pia mater in mouse and human brains, which divides the subarachnoid space (SAS) into two functional compartments. Being a macroscopic structure, having missed detection in previous studies is surprising. We systematically reviewed the published reports in animals and humans to explore whether prior descriptions of this meningeal layer were reported in some way. A comprehensive search was conduc

Cryptococcal infection established in adult male albino rats under experimental conditions produced minimal tissue response to the infection, probably owing to the presence of cryptococcal capsular polysaccharide. Following hyaluronidase administration in the active phases of experimental cryptococcal infection, we have observed characteristic histiocytic granulomatous transformation in cerebral as well as extracerebral lesions. It is postulated that hyaluronidase depolymerizes the capsular mucopolysaccharide of Cryptococcus neoformans and causes its lysis. As a consequence, cryptococcal yeast

Circumscribed atherosclerotic involvement of secondary and tertiary branches of major cerebral arteries is a common angiographic finding whose nature is rarely in question. However, widespread and severe changes are unusual, and radiologic interpretation may be more difficult. We recently cared for a patient whose angiogram demonstrated extensive involvement of leptomeningeal vessels and were prompted to review the clinical courses and autopsy findings of a number of other patients with similar angiographic findings. Our observations suggest that the radiological appearance of leptomeningeal a

BACKGROUND: Hypertrophic pachymeningitis (HP) is a rare disorder that involves localized or diffuse thickening of the dura mater. HP is associated with various inflammatory, infectious, and malignant diseases, such as rheumatic arthritis, sarcoidosis, anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis, IgG4-related disorders, syphilis, tuberculosis, bacterial and fungal infections, cancer, and idiopathic diseases, when evaluation fails to reveal a cause. Among them, chronic infection with Propionibacterium acnes is a rare etiology of HP, and its pathology remains unclear.

Primary melanocytic tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) are extremely rare and account for only 1% of all melanomas and 0.05% of primary brain tumors. In case of diffusely invasive lesions of the pia mater with a tumor of melanocytic origin (without signs of extracranial metastases), the tumors are classified as primary diffuse meningeal melanomatosis (PDMM). The latter is an extremely rare subtype of CNS malignant tumor with an incidence rate of 1 in 20 million people. Despite the development of neuroimaging techniques, today a morphological examination remains the main and most accura

The cranial meninges, comprised of the dura mater, arachnoid, and pia mater, are thought to primarily serve structural functions for the nervous system. For example, they protect the brain from the skull and anchor/organize the vascular and neuronal supply of the cortex. However, the meninges are also implicated in nervous system disorders such as migraine, where the pain experienced during a migraine is attributed to local sterile inflammation and subsequent activation of local nociceptive afferents. Of the layers in the meninges, the dura mater is of particular interest in the pathophysiolog

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Leptomeningeal schwannomas are very rare; to our knowledge, only one case has been previously reported. The possible histogenesis and differential diagnosis of intracranial schwannomas not related to cranial nerves are discussed.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old man presented with a sudden onset of seizures. Computed tomographic scans revealed a small hypodense mass in the peripheral aspect of the left frontal lobe. The mass was hypointense on T1-weighted and hyperintense on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans, with ring enhancement after contrast medium

The distribution of 5'-nucleotidase (5'-Nu) is reported in spinal meninges of the rat on the basis of an immunohistochemical and enzyme histochemical investigation. Strong immunoreactivity was found in the arachnoid membrane and in the sheaths of the spinal roots as well as in septa subdividing the roots. Also the superficial layer of the ligamentum denticulatum showed enzyme staining. No immunoreactivity could be detected in the pia mater or along the spinal nerve roots outside the subarachnoid space. Within the arachnoid mater the immunoreactivity was concentrated in the basal zone of the ar

Loss of function of the mouse forkhead/winged helix transcription factor Foxc1 induces congenital hydrocephalus and impaired skull bone development due to failure of apical expansion of the bone. In this study we investigated meningeal development in the congenital hydrocephalus (ch) mouse with spontaneous loss of function mutant of Foxc1, around the period of initiation of skull bone apical expansion. In situ hybridization of Runx2 revealed active apical expansion of the frontal bone begins between embryonic day 13.5 and embryonic day 14.5 in the wild type, whereas expansion was inhibited in

The trigeminal nerve transmits headache pain from blood vessels of the pia mater and dura mater. Triggers for this pain are not well understood, but probably are multiple and largely chemical and develop within the brain parenchyma, the blood vessel wall, and the blood itself. These unknown triggers stimulate the trigeminovascular axons, causing pain and releasing vasoactive neuropeptides from perivascular axons. Released neuropeptides activate endothelial cells, mast cells, and platelets to then increase extracellular levels of amines, arachidonate metabolites, peptides, and ions. Hyperalgesi

The central nervous system is lined by meninges, classically known as dura, arachnoid, and pia mater. We show the existence of a fourth meningeal layer that compartmentalizes the subarachnoid space in the mouse and human brain, designated the subarachnoid lymphatic-like membrane (SLYM). SLYM is morpho- and immunophenotypically similar to the mesothelial membrane lining of peripheral organs and body cavities, and it encases blood vessels and harbors immune cells. Functionally, the close apposition of SLYM with the endothelial lining of the meningeal venous sinus permits direct exchange of small

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer is the most prevalent cancer in men. However, leptomeningeal involvement by prostate carcinoma is a rare event.
CASE: Here, we report a 69-year-old patient with castration-resistant metastatic prostate cancer who presented with headache and ataxia. Brain MRI revealed a huge invasive interaxial mass at right occipital lobe with diffuse thickening and enhancement of meninges, the arachnoid, and the pia mater, and he was diagnosed with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis. The patient received whole brain radiotherapy.
CONCLUSION: Despite the fact that brain and leptomening

Meningitis is an infectious disease commonly arising from a bacterial etiology. The rapid progression of morbidity and mortality due to bacterial meningitis requires critical and imminent time-dependent clinical intervention. Although it is unambiguously clear that bacteria must infiltrate the cerebrospinal fluid, the sequence of events in the pathogenesis of bacterial meningitis has not been fully elucidated. Most reviews of the pathogenesis of bacterial meningitis do not specify the anatomical location of bacteria following BBB traversal. We propose an additional hypothesis focusing on the V

We present an autopsied case of non-plaque-type dura mater graft-associated Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (dCJD) with extensive amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition in the brain. A 39-year-old Japanese woman presented with memory disturbance and abnormal behavior. The patient had a history of craniotomy with dura matter-graft transplant for a head injury which occurred when she was 19 years old. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed hyperintensities in the cerebral cortex and striatum on diffusion-weighted images, particularly on the dura mater-grafted right side. Her clinical symptoms, including rapidly p

A case of gliomatosis cerebri in a 27-year-old man showing various cranial nerve manifestations is described. He was diagnosed as having cranial mononeuritis multiplex (bilateral oculomotor nerve paralysis, left facial nerve paralysis, bulbar palsy manifestations, and hypoglossal nerve paralysis) and was hospitalized in the neurology department on August 1, 2000. Although he continued to visit the neurology department after discharge, his manifestations showed no improvement. He was sent to our department for brain biopsy in August 2001. A biopsy performed at the Sylvian fissure from the front
