The effects of combined treatment with OK-432, an immunomodulator prepared from Streptococcus haemolyticus, and aztreonam, a monobactum antibiotic, in the prevention of radiation-induced bacteraemia and mortality were examined in ICR-MCH mice irradiated with 9.5 Gy. The organisms recovered from the irradiated mice were Streptococcus faecalis and Proteus mirabilis. BACKGROUND: Ranula is a rare benign cystic lesion in the floor of the mouth, which can herniate through the mylohyoid muscle and become a plunging ranula. Treatment for ranulas is currently surgical excision of the sublingual gland. The case of a 16-year-old female patient with the giant cell type of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) in the left posterior mediastinum is reported. This is a very unusual site for MFH. Immunotherapy induced a prolonged partial remission lasting 15 months with a marked reduction in tumor size. The usefulness of immunotherapy for MFH needs to be evaluated.

Kupffer cells are major matrix metalloproteinase-producing cells in the liver. We analyzed 30 endoscopically treated patients with early gastric cancer in terms of the utility of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and the evaluation of prognosis. Endoscopic therapy for early gastric cancer included strip biopsy, laser irradiation, and OK-432 injection. We evaluated various immunologic parameters in patients with papillary and follicular carcinomas of the thyroid gland. Our studies included examinations of peripheral blood lymphocytes and skin reactions to selected antigens. Preoperative peripheral blood tests were found to be normal except for an elevated percentage of IgG X Fc+ T-cells (T gamma). After curative surgery for gastric cancers judged macroscopically to be at stage 2 or 3, patients were divided into 4 groups by randomization. We report a very rare case of a plunging ranula extending into the parapharyngeal space, which was treated successfully with OK-432.
