Superficial mycoses in Saudi Arabia.

Between June 1988 and December 1990, 1018 cases of superficial mycoses were investigated. Diagnosis was confirmed by microscopic examination in 503 cases and the causal agent was isolated in 490 cases. Tinea capitis accounted for 47.7% (92.5% in children below 10 years of age). The frequency of other clinical types in descending order was pityriasis versicolor 25.8%, tinea corporis 9%, onychomycosis 5.8%, tinea pedis 4%, intertrigo 3.9% and tinea cruris 2.8%. Erythrasma was encountered three times and mixed piedra and trichomycosis axillaris once. Microsporum canis was the commonest aetiologic

Smilodon sabertooth bite marks, new perspectives on prey-predator models in South American Pleistocene.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, saber-toothed cats, particularly species of the genus Smilodon, were considered unable to bite through bones due to the apparent fragility of their teeth. We analyze here megafauna fossil remains of Salto de Piedra palaeontological site (Humid Pampas), one of the few extensively radiometrically dated Pleistocene sites in Argentina and systematically excavated. Salto de Piedra is located near contemporary human occupation sites that have yielded megafauna remains. This spatial and chronological proximity provides an exceptional scenario to compare the prey ranges hunt

Historical aspects of dermatomycoses.

Physicians have been aware of superficial fungal infections for centuries, but the causal agents and treatments of fungal infections remained unknown until the mid-1800s, when numerous important findings were reported. Among the relevant researchers in the field of superficial mycoses were Remak, who found the fungal nature of favus in 1837; Berg, who reported oral candidosis in 1841; and Wilkinson, who described vaginal candidosis in 1849. Tinea versicolor was described clinically in 1846 by Eichstedt, and its etiologic agent was identified in 1853. Beigel reported white piedra in 1856, and C

[Contribution to the study of Trichosporon cutaneum (de Beurman, Gougerot et Vaucher), Ota (1926) (author's transl)].

The pathogenicity is studied in vitro and in vivo. White piedra is obtained in vitro on hair applying a technic described by Vanbrueseghem (1949) for the study of dermatophytes. Concerning the in vivo study: retrocultures of the kidneys, the lungs, the brain and the liver of white mice inoculated with T. cutaneum (50,000 cells) by the intravenous route were all positive.

Trichosporon inkin peritonitis treated with caspofungin.

Trichosporon inkin is one of six pathogenic species of the genus Trichosporon and the etiologic agent of pubic white piedra. Trichosporon species have been reported as a cause of disseminated infections, particularly among immunosuppressed patients. We describe the third reported case of T. inkin peritonitis associated with peritoneal dialysis and the first to be treated with caspofungin.

Onycholysis and Chromonychia: A Case Caused by Trichosporon inkin.

Yeasts cause only 5-10% of onychomycosis; the most common yeast is Candida albicans, and rarely Trichosporon spp. is found. Recently, it has become an important cause of fungemia with a high mortality rate in immunocompromised patients. Superficial infections caused by Trichosporon spp., including piedra and onychomycosis, occur in immunocompetent patients. Herein, we report a case of a fungal nail infection characterized by onycholysis and chromonychia caused by Trichosporon inkin.

Trichosporon on humans: a practical account.

Six human pathogenic Trichosporon species are described with respect to criteria for routine identification, epidemiology and clinical origin: T. ovoides, T. inkin, T. asahii, T. asteroides (Fissuricella filamenta), T. cutaneum, and T. mucoides. These species are causative agents of white piedra and cutaneous infections and are involved in systemic, localized or disseminated mycoses, particularly in patients with underlying haematological malignancy. Data on in vitro sensitivity to antifungal drugs are provided.

A rare case of urinary tract infection due to Trichosporon asahii in a diabetic patient.

Trichosporon asahii is a basidiomycete yeast responsible for white piedra and onychomycosis in the immunocompetent host. In the immunocompromised patients, invasive infections are reported; their diagnosis is difficult and they are associated with high mortality rate. Urinary infection due to Trichosporon Asahi is rare but its incidence increasing. We report the case of a 58 year old diabetic patient. The yeast was isolated from urine samples of three consecutive crops in pure form. The patient improved after antifungal therapy.

[Hair casts in lichen ruber].

We present a 59-year old male patient, who had small plant cylinders 1-2 mm in length adhering to the hair shafts and easily moved up and down along them. We found hair casts together with lichen ruber follicularis and pseudopelade of the Brocq type. The presence of hair casts is often misdiagnosed as pediculosis capitis, piedra alba or trichorrhexis nodosa. The case report and the literature are discussed.

Neotypification of the genus Trichosporon.

The currently accepted type species of the genus Trichosporon Behrend is T. beigelii. This species has formerly been regarded as identical to T. cutaneum. However, these fungi are now known to represent separate species with different ecology. The first species described in Trichosporon was T. ovoides, an agent of human white piedra. A neotype strain is designated for this species, while a lectotype strain is indicated for T. cutaneum. The name T. beigelii is considered as doubtful and consequently cannot be maintained.

Trichosporon asahii infection of a dialysis PTFE arteriovenous graft.

Trichosporon species are the causative agents of superficial skin infections, such as white piedra. Immunocompromised hosts, particularly those with underlying hematological malignancy, are at risk of developing invasive infection, which usually progresses to disseminated life-threatening disease. Peritonitis caused by Trichosporon has been described in end-stage renal disease patients treated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Here, we report on a Trichosporon infection of an arteriovenous graft in a patient on chronic hemodialysis. The infection was successfully treated with flu

Outbreaks of clinical mastitis caused by Trichosporon beigelii in dairy herds.

Trichosporon beigelii is widely distributed in nature and is classically associated with white piedra, a mycosis that may involve the hair of the human body. Intramammary infections caused by T beigelii may be fatal in cows; the prevalence in affected dairy herds may be high. Affected cows may have hyperthermia, swelling of the udder, and substantially decreased milk production or agalactia. Intramammary infections caused by yeast, including T beigelii, may also be associated with high bacterial counts in bulk-tank milk.

Fungemia due to Trichosporon mucoides in a diabetes mellitus patient: a rare case report.

Trichosporon species are widely distributed in nature and can occasionally belong to the human microbiota. For many years, Trichosporon beigelii, the only species of this genus, was found as the aetiological agent of superficial skin infection called white piedra. However, many cases of invasive trichosporonosis caused by different newly delineated species of Trichosporon have been published in increasing numbers in recent past years, especially in immunocompromised persons. We report a rare case of fungemia due to Trichosporon mucoides in a diabetes mellitus patient, which will add to the eme

Trichosporon asahii: an unusual cause of invasive infection in neonates.

Trichosporon asahii causes white piedra, an infection of hair shafts and onychomycosis in immunocompetent patients, as well as various localized or disseminated invasive infections in immunodeficient hosts. We describe a 26-week gestation 890-g vaginally delivered female neonate who had severe respiratory distress syndrome and on the sixth day of life developed Klebsiella pneumoniae sepsis. At the same time two blood cultures were positive for T. asahii. The neonate was also colonized with T. asahii in the pharynx and perineum. The infant was successfully treated with conventional amphotericin

Trichosporon cutaneum (Trichosporon asahii) infection mimicking hand eczema in a patient with leukemia.

Trichosporon Cutaneum is a yeast-like fungus that causes white piedra and onychomycosis. Recently, it has also been recognized as an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised hosts. We describe a 64-year-old woman who developed a superficial Trichosporon infection mimicking hand eczema during chemotherapy for her chronic myelocytic leukemia. To our knowledge, no cases of superficial infection like this one have previously been reported. This case suggests that careful examination is required in diagnosing Trichosporon infection in immunocompromised hosts, because the infection can be invasiv

Systemic infection with Trichosporon cutaneum in a patient with acute leukemia: report of a case.

A case of disseminated infection with Trichosporon cutaneum, a fungus that causes white piedra, is described. The patient, a 58-year-old barber with acute leukemia, had fever, myalgias and skin lesions. He was receiving cytotoxic drug therapy and prednisone, was severely neutropenic and was being treated with broad spectrum antibiotics. Blood cultures and a biopsy of the skin lesion grew T. cutaneum. He died despite amphotericin B therapy. At autopsy, widespread infection with T. cutaneum was present. T. cutaneum is another fungus capable of causing widespread systemic disease in the immunocom

Noninflammatory, nonpruritic alopecia of horses.

Noninflammatory, nonpruritic alopecias are uncommonly encountered in the horse. Alopecia areata, an apparently autoimmune hair follicle bulbitis produces focal, multifocal to widespread hair loss. The skin is otherwise normal. Diseases that can mimic the widespread hair loss associated with alopecia areata include telogen and anagen effluvium, seasonal alopecias, follicular dysplasias (including color dilution alopecia), various nutritional deficiencies and chemical toxicosis, and diseases that result in defective hair shafts (eg, trichorrhexis nodosa and piedra). These problems are differenti
