[Fine needle aspiration cytology of eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma and its differential diagnosis].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) features and differential diagnosis of eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma. METHODS: Four cases of eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma diagnosed by FNAC were reported and confirmed by biopsy. Three of the cases were in early stages with tumor sizes smaller than 10 mm in diameter and without metastasis. The smears were stained by routine H & E and SudanIII methods. The cytologic findings were described and compared to corresponding histological features, and moreover, compared to chalazion, pilomatrixoma and eyelid basal cell carci

Unexpected trichilemmal cyst of the thigh: MRI appearance at an atypical site.

Trichilemmal (pilar) cysts are benign lesions that originate from the outer root sheath of hair follicles and most commonly occur on the scalp. However, they can occasionally present in atypical locations. We describe the case of a 36-year-old woman who presented with a slowly enlarging, superficial right-thigh mass that was mobile and mildly tender on examination. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a well-circumscribed, round lesion with T1/T2 hypointensity and internal foci of low signal, suggestive of a benign lesion, such as a trichilemmal cyst. Surgical excision was performed,

The Girl With the Bleeding Earlobe Mass.

Pilomatrixomas, also known as epithelioma calcificans, are benign tumors of hair follicle matrix cells that are often mistaken for other lesions, especially cutaneous abscesses. We report an illustrative case in which a teenage girl developed a red, swollen earlobe that required multiple care visits and interventions until definitive diagnosis and treatment were provided. Although the lesion was initially treated as an abscess, it continued to progress in size and discomfort. The correct diagnosis was established after imaging and complete excision with pathologic examination. Ultimately, our

Granular cell tumour of non-neural origin, ALK positive: Case report and literature review.

Non-neural granular cell tumour (NNGCT) is a rare cutaneous neoplasm characterised by the absence of S100 expression and a differentiation of uncertain lineage. We present the case of a 13-year-old male patient with a cutaneous lesion on the left wrist, initially diagnosed as pilomatrixoma. Histological analysis revealed a proliferation of spindle-shaped cells with eosinophilic granular cytoplasm and immunohistochemical positivity for ALK, NKI/C3, CD10, and CD68, with negativity for S100. ALK positivity in this case supports the hypothesis of a potential genetic alteration shared with other AL

Pilomatrix Carcinoma of Infrequent Localization.

A 63-year-old man, with no past medical history, presented with an asymptomatic, progressively evolving polypoid lesion for 2 years in the left ciliary region. Physical examination revealed an exophytic tumor lesion of firm consistency and lobulated surface, with regular and well-defined borders. It measured 2 cm in diameter, and had a brownish-violet coloration with whitish areas (Figure 1).

Familial papular epidermal nevus with "skyline" basal cell layer and multiple pilomatricomas: A new association?

Papular epidermal nevus with "skyline" basal cell layer is a newly described keratinocytic nevus. Recently, papular epidermal nevus with "skyline" basal cell layer has been reported in association with extracutaneous involvement, and the term papular epidermal nevus with "skyline" basal cell layer syndrome is used to indicate a neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by the presence of papular epidermal nevus with "skyline" basal cell layer and different neurologic symptoms that seem to improve during infancy and adolescence. Multiple pilomatricomas have been reported in association with various

A perforating pilomatricomal horn on the arm of an 11-year-old girl.

Cutaneous horns are uncommon in adults and rare in the pediatric population. Although verruca vulgaris, solar keratosis, and squamous cell carcinoma are more common entities that can present as cutaneous horns in the general population, conditions such as molluscum contagiosum, juvenile xanthgranuloma, and pyogenic granuloma have been reported causes in the pediatric population. We present a case of a perforating pilomatricoma presenting as a cutaneous horn in an 11 year old girl.

A comparative study of pilomatricoma and epidermoid cyst with ultrasound.

AIM: To explore and compare the ultrasonic (US) features of pilomatricoma (PM) and epidermoid cyst (EC) in the differential diagnosis and improve the accuracy of US diagnosis of PM. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred and nine patients who underwent US examination before surgery with a histopathological diagnosis of PM or EC after surgery were analysed retrospectively. The patients were categorised into the training and validation sets according to the inspection times. Univariate analysis was undertaken on the US and clinical features of PM and statistically significant variables (p<0.05) w

Giant Pilomatricoma Mistaken for a Malignant Tumor.

Pilomatricomas are tumors originating from the matrices of hair follicles. Giant pilomatricomas, defined as pilomatricomas that are 5 cm or larger, are benign but may appear malignant clinically. We present the case of a 69-year-old man with a rapidly growing mass on his scalp. When he visited our department, the tumor measured 10.0×6.0×4.0 cm and showed inflammation and ulceration. Magnetic resonance imaging and 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography showed findings resembling lymph node metastasis from a malignant tumor. However, upon an incisional biopsy, t

Distinguishing a Trichilemmal Cyst From a Pilomatricoma With Ultrasound.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether ultrasound (US) could distinguish a trichilemmal cyst from a pilomatricoma preoperatively. METHODS: Ultrasound images of 61 pathologically proven trichilemmal cysts and 90 pathologically proven pilomatricomas were analyzed retrospectively. Two radiologists evaluated several US features. The sensitivity, specificity, Youden index, and predictive values of statistically significant US features were assessed. Parallel combined tests, serial combined tests, or both were performed to identify US features with high statistical significance. RESULTS: Results from in

A histopathological study of ophthalmic lesions.

Ophthalmic lesions include a wide spectrum of conditions ranging from benign lesions to precancerous lesions and malignant lesions. The diagnosis of these lesions is based on the clinical as well as histopathological features. This was a prospective study of ophthalmic lesions conducted in the department of pathology of Nepal Medial College teaching hospital over a period of one year (September 2012 - August 2013). In this study period, we received total 11 ophthalmic biopsies. Out of these, 54.5% cases were conjunctival lesions and 45.5% cases were eye lid lesions. The age range was from 8 ye

Integrating vascularity into the pattern classification of pilomatricomas on ultrasound provides a more competent approach for discriminative evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Pilomatricoma has various manifestations on color Doppler ultrasound, and a differential diagnosis is challenging. The objective of this study was to investigate which characteristics of skin lesions on color Doppler ultrasound are effective in distinguishing pilomatricoma from epidermoid cyst and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Records of patients with pilomatricomas (n = 63), epidermoid cysts (n = 76), and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (n = 19) who underwent color Doppler ultrasound evaluation and surgical excision were reviewed. The anatomical distribu

Deceptive appearance of primary mucinous carcinoma of the eyelid: A rare case and literature review.

Primary mucinous carcinoma (PMC) of the eyelid is an exceedingly rare malignancy that often presents as an innocuous, slow-growing lesion, leading to frequent misdiagnosis as a benign entity. This diagnostic challenge can lead to delayed treatment and potential recurrence. We report a unique case of PMC in a patient who presented with a clinically benign-appearing lesion, initially considered for differential diagnoses such as keratoacanthoma, epidermoid cyst, and pilomatrixoma. A diagnostic surprise emerged when histopathological evaluation confirmed PMC. Despite recommendations for wide loca

Giant Pilomatrix Carcinoma of the Thorax: An Uncommon and Clinically Misdiagnosed Tumor.

Pilomatrix carcinoma is an unusual and aggressive malignant tumor deriving from follicular matrix cells and exhibiting a metastatic potential to lungs and regional lymph nodes in 10% of cases. We report the case of a 54-year-old male patient who presented with a biopsy-proven malignant pilomatrixoma of the thoracic region, which recurred multiple times after previous excisions. Due to the size of the tumor (28 by 22 cm), wide excision and axillary lymphadenectomy of levels I and II were performed, followed by reconstruction with a free deep inferior epigastric artery perforator flap and adjuva

Metastatic basal cell carcinoma: a clinicopathologic study of seventeen cases.

Basal cell carcinoma is a common cutaneous neoplasm that rarely metastasizes. We studied the clinical and pathologic features of 17 patients with metastatic basal cell carcinoma as recorded in the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP). Sixteen of the patients were male, and as far as it could be determined, all were white. The most frequent site of metastasis was lung (9 cases), followed by bone (5), lymph nodes (4), liver (3), spleen (1), and adrenal gland (1). Thirteen of the patients had metastatic lesions involving only one organ system. Mean survival time after metastasi
