Surgical treatment of sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus with rhomboid flap.

In this review, we summarized the general characteristics of pilonidal sinus disease and details of rhomboid flap (RF) technique used in its treatment, and discussed the results of RF methods and its comparison with other techniques, principally with flap technique available in the literature. When performed studies are examined, RF technique has come into prominence nowadays with low recurrence and infection rates, and with a comfortable surgical technique. Recently, it has been anticipated that with the modification of this technique, the recurrence rate would be lower.

Risk factors for wound complication in pilonidal sinus procedures.

BACKGROUND: Pilonidal disease is a common condition among young people. Complicated pilonidal surgical wounds are associated with considerable morbidity, including chronic sacral wound, loss of work time, and lifestyle limitation. The aim of our study is to report our experience with Karydakis procedure and explore the risk factors associated with infection and poor healing in pilonidal operation. STUDY DESIGN: A 3-year experience of a Joint-Commission International accredited tertiary center in patients with pilonidal sinus operations is reported. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of un

Rare occupational disease of hair dressers: interdigital pilonidal sinus.

Interdigital pilonidal sinus is a rare occupational disease related to work with short hair. Hair dresser's disease is the interdigital pilonidal sinus encountered in male barbers. A case of pilonidal sinus in the interdigital web is reported. We performed surgical excision and primary closure. There were neither complications nor recurrence in the third month after excision. We propose that surgical excision is inevitable and that any primary treatment can improve the patients' postoperative comfort. Thus, primary closure or closure with a flap, instead of secondary healing, should always be

[Surgical treatment of pilonidal sinus with open surgical technique].

BACKGROUND: Personal experience and results about the surgical treatment of pilonidal sinus using the open technique operation are reported. METHODS: Between January 1984 and June 2001, 577 patients (457 males and 120 females) underwent this surgical technique. Eighty-five patients presented recurrences of the under-lying disease previously treated with closed technique in other centres. In order to reduce the risks of recurrence, pilonidal sinus was widely resected in order to remove every fistulous track laterally or towards the anal edge. The surgical wound has to be wide, carefully draine

Intermammary pilonidal sinus in an adolescent female: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pilonidal sinus disease typically occurs in the sacrococcygeal region, with the intermammary location being exceptionally rare. We report the first documented case of an intermammary pilonidal sinus from eastern India in a 14-year-old Asian female. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old Asian female presented with 1-year history of intermammary swelling that evolved into a discharging sinus after 11 months. Physical examination revealed multiple sinus tract openings in the intermammary region with surrounding induration. Complete excision of the sinus tract with primary closure was perf

Concurrent pilonidal sinus of the nape of the neck and sacrococcygeal region.

The most common site for a pilonidal sinus is the sacrococcygeal region, typically affecting hirsute males. Hair entrapment beneath the skin triggers a granulomatous reaction, leading to the formation of a sinus tract. Here, we present a rare case of concurrent pilonidal abscess in both the nape of the neck and the natal cleft. To date, only five similar cases have been reported in the literature, making this presentation unique. The patient, in his mid-30s, presented with recurrent swelling and discharging sinuses in both the nape of the neck and the intergluteal region. The surgical intervent

Progress in the surgical treatment of sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus: a review.

BACKGROUND: A pilonidal sinus (PS) is an acquired disease resulting from recurrent infections and chronic inflammation. A PS involving the sacrococcyx is referred to as a sacrococcygeal PS (SPS). An SPS is a rare chronic infectious disease for which surgery is a good choice. The incidence of SPS has gradually increased worldwide in recent years. However, surgeons have not reached a consensus on the preferred surgical approach for SPS. The authors performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to analyze differences in the efficacy of different surgical approaches for the treatment of SPS. ME

Pilonidal sinus of breast, a case report with literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Pilonidal sinus (PNS) is an acquired inflammatory infection that mostly occurs in the sacrococcygeal region. This study aims to present a case of breast pilonidal sinus with a brief literature review. CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old female presented with two painful right breast lumps for about one-month duration. Ultrasound (US) examination revealed heterogeneous areas with minimal inflammation at the right breast. There was also a nipple inversion, retro areolar duct dilatation, skin fistula, and reactive inflammatory level I axillary lymph nodes, suggesting inflammation/infe

Limberg flap reconstruction for the treatment of pilonidal sinus disease.

Pilonidal disease is a common chronic disorder of the sacrococcygeal area affecting young people. Recent reports have advocated different surgical approaches, such as open or closed technique, but recurrence complicates all forms of treatment. We conducted this case review to evaluate the validity of Limberg flap reconstruction method in the treatment of chronic recurrent pilonidal disease. In the period between September 2003 and December 2004, 32 male patients with complicated/recurrent pilonidal disease were operated on using the Limberg flap reconstruction method. The patients' mean age wa

Effectiveness of collagenase in the treatment of sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease.

PURPOSE: Sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease (SPSD) is a disease affecting young patients, which results in a long-term loss of productive power, and also tends to have high rates of morbidity since it has no ideal treatment. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of topical collagenase in the treatment of SPSD. METHODS: In the present study, 40 patients admitted to our department were separated into two groups. Excision and marsupialization with dressing by bacterial collagenase was performed in the first group, while the treatment was excision and marsupializ

A case of sacro-coccygeal chordoma masquerading as pilonidal sinus.

Chordoma is a rare, slow-growing, but locally aggressive malignant tumour derived from the primitive notochord. Pilonidal sinus disease, characterised by communicating granulating natal cleft tracts and abscesses, is a common condition. We report a case of a sacro-coccygeal chordoma diagnosed incidentally on surgical exploration of a case of presumed pilonidal disease.

[Pilonidal sinus in a patient with Buckley's syndrome. A case report].

Buckley's syndrome is a nosologic entity characterized by the presence from birth of extremely elevated levels of circulating immunoglobulin E and an important deficiency of polymorphonuclear chemotaxis. The consequences of such alterations are represented by the premature rising of recurrent cutaneous, pulmonary and articular infections, slowing down of growth and quite significant disturbances of the immune system. We report a case which presents all the characteristics of Buckley's syndrome: familial history for atopy; otorhinolaryngologic, gynecologic and pulmonary recurrent infections fro

[Surgical revision of the pilonidal sinus with single shot antibiosis].

For a therapy of the pilonidal sinus there are different surgical and non-surgical methods to be found in literature. In our surgical wing 140 male patients have been operated on this disease from September 1990 to July 1992. 16 cases out of these 140 were re-operations. Using a special surgical technique we applied the excision with a primary closure under single-shot antibiosis in 139 cases. By modifying this antibiosis prophylaxis we could reach a primary success healing rate of up to 96%. A retrospective study among our patients showed a recurrence rate of 5%.

Excision and grafting in treatment of recurrent pilonidal sinus disease.

Most failure and recurrences after excision and grafting occur during the first five months postoperatively. We concluded that this most likely indicated inadequate excision rather than inefficacy of the procedure. For small pilonidal sinus with minor sinus tract and shallow natal cleft, excision with primary closure would seem to be the best procedure. However, for extensive or recurrent sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease, wide excision with primary split thickness skin grafting is superior. We reviewed 58 patients who had undergone excision of extensive or recurrent pilonidal disease, with pri
