The effect of the palmaris longus muscle on fine motor skills, position sense and grip strength.

BackgroundThe palmaris longus muscle (PLM) occurs in various forms in the human body, with its complete absence being the most common variation. Although the PLM is frequently used in reconstructive surgeries, its functional impact, especially on fine motor skills, remains unclear and has not been directly studied.ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate whether the presence or absence of the PLM affects gross grip strength, pinch grip strength, wrist joint proprioception, and fine motor skills, thereby determining if the PLM has a functional role in hand performance.MethodsA total of 497 indi

Relationship between ultrasonographic hand muscle thickness measurements and muscle strength following median or ulnar nerve reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between ultrasonographic hand muscle thickness measurements and hand muscle strength in patients who underwent median or ulnar nerve reconstruction. METHODS: In this prospective, cross-sectional study, intrinsic hand muscle thicknesses were measured using ultrasound with a 4- to 13-MHz linear-array probe. Measurements of hand strength were performed using a dynamometer and a pinchmeter. RESULTS: In the median nerve group (n = 11), a moderate correlation (r = 0.694; P = .018) was observed between lateral pinch strength and tra

The added value of measuring thumb and finger strength when comparing strength measurements in hypoplastic thumb patients.

BACKGROUND: When interventions to the hand are aimed at improving function of specific fingers or the thumb, the RIHM (Rotterdam Intrinsic Hand Myometer) is a validated tool and offers more detailed information to assess strength of the involved joints besides grip and pinch measurements. METHODS: In this study, strength was measured in 65 thumbs in 40 patients diagnosed with thumb hypoplasia. These 65 thumbs were classified according to Blauth. Longitudinal radial deficiencies were also classified. The strength measurements comprised of grip, tip, tripod and key pinch. Furthermore palmar abd

Role of mechanical forces in hand nail configuration asymmetry in hemiplegia: an analysis of four hundred thumb nails.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between nail configuration and mechanical force, the nail morphology and pinch strengths of the paralyzed and non-paralyzed sides of patients with hemiplegia were measured. METHODS: Study 1: Analysis of nail configuration. Both thumb nails of 100 subjects with hemiplegia and 100 healthy volunteers (400 thumb nails) were enrolled. The left and right thumb nails were compared in terms of configuration, namely the curve index (defined as nail height/width). Study 2: Measurement of pinch strength. In 10 subjects with hemiplegia and 10 healthy volunteers, the

Evaluation of functional recovery in the intrinsic and flexor muscles after nerve transfer for ulnar nerve lesion. A new measurement method: The Cha method.

"Supercharge" end-to-side (SETS) nerve transfer for lesions of the proximal ulnar nerve is a recognized novel option, but improvement in motor function after surgery has not been properly evaluated. We therefore propose a modified method for quantitative evaluation of improvement in the intrinsic hand strength. We screened 216 patients with proximal ulnar nerve lesions who presented to our outpatient department from 2012 to 2020. Of these, 101 met our inclusion/exclusion criteria and were evaluated just before surgery. We used a novel method to measure finger abduction ("2nd-abd"), adduction (

Ultrasonographic evaluation of ulnar innervated muscles in ulnar neuropathy at the elbow.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative muscle ultrasound (qMUS) provides morphological measurements that can support clinical observation of muscle atrophy and weakness. As the use of qMUS continues to expand, and its potential for broader implementation in neuromuscular evaluation grows, there is a clear need for further validation, particularly in pathologies frequently encountered in electrodiagnostic laboratories, such as cubital tunnel syndrome caused by ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the validity of qMUS evaluation of ulnar-innervated intrinsic hand muscles. DESIGN: Cros

A prospective clinical study of the A1 pulley in trigger thumbs.

A prospective study was performed in 19 patients with trigger thumbs to define the anatomy of the A1 pulley of the thumb in this condition and to evaluate biomechanical parameters of the thumb after complete division of the A1 pulley. Pre- and postoperatively, flexion of the interphalangeal and metacarpophalangeal joints, key pinch strength and tip pinch strength were measured and compared with these measurements on the contralateral thumb. We identified three types of A1 pulley. The clinical data showed that there is no deficit with respect to motion and strength of the thumb after completely

Pinch Force Endurance and Usability Considerations for Pre-Filled Syringe Designs Used by Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients.

Prefilled syringes (PFSs) are commonly used for self-administered injectable drugs, particularly for chronic conditions. A critical design factor is the injection force needed to depress the plunger, which varies by drug viscosity and syringe mechanics. This is especially important for patients with potential strength limitations. Human factors studies help evaluate these physical demands to ensure PFSs can be used safely and effectively across diverse users. Assessing both maximum force capabilities and endurance provides key insights for optimizing syringe design and minimizing patient disco

Comparison of wrist and elbow stabilization following pinch reconstruction in tetraplegia.

PURPOSE: Individuals with spinal cord injuries resulting in tetraplegia may receive tendon transfer surgery to restore grasp and pinch function. These procedures often involve rerouting the brachioradialis (Br) and the extensor carpi radialis longus tendons volar to the flexion-extension axis of the wrist, leaving the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) muscle to provide wrist extension strength. The purpose of this study was to determine whether externally stabilizing the wrist after transfer procedures would improve the ability to activate the transferred Br and resulting pinch force, simi
