Twenty-eight outpatients with chronic severe lumbar pain participated in a double-blind comparative trial on the clinical efficacy of orally administered piroxicam and indomethacin. Piroxicam and diclofenac were compared for 4 weeks in an open parallel study in 20 rheumatoid arthritis patients each. Both preparations showed good efficacy and were well tolerated, piroxicam appearing to be slightly superior in both respects. Piroxicam exercised a significant action on the inflammation-specific parameters (reduction of BSR by 6.15 mm maximum and of the alpha 2-globulin fraction by 0.75%), whereas diclofenac did not. Another advantage of piroxicam is its low effective dosage level achieved by a single daily dose.

A 12-week, double blind study was conducted in 140 patients with osteoarthritis to compare the efficacy and toleration of piroxicam 10-20 mg once daily to indomethacin 75-125 mg in divided doses. Seventy-seven percent of piroxicam and 63% of indomethacin patients completed the study. Haemangiosarcoma (HSA) is a highly aggressive vascular tumour in dogs, characterised by rapid growth, early metastasis, and poor prognosis despite conventional treatment with surgery and doxorubicin-based chemotherapy. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Arthroscopy is often performed in an out-patient department or as one-day surgery. Opioids often used as postoperative analgesics may have unwanted side effects that may postpone the patient's discharge from hospital. This study was designed to evaluate a substitute for the most frequently used opioid pethidine. For pain relief, non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs are recommended, but they offer a limited choice for parenteral administration. We used a new agent (Neodolpasse) based on diclophenac and orphenadine, and compared its efficacy with piroxicam and placebo.
