Behavioural and event-related potentials evidence for pitch discrimination deficits in dyslexic children: improvement after intensive phonic intervention.

Although it is commonly accepted that dyslexic children have auditory phonological deficits, the precise nature of these deficits remains unclear. This study examines potential pitch processing deficit in dyslexic children, and recovery after specific training, by measuring event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and behavioural responses to pitch manipulations within natural speech. In two experimental sessions, separated by 6 weeks of training, 10 dyslexic children, aged 9-12, were compared to reading age-matched controls, using sentences from children's books. The pitch of the sentence's fina

Beyond voice: perceptions of gender in male-to-female transsexuals.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review covers recent research findings that demonstrate the effectiveness of speech pathology intervention in enabling male-to-female transsexual individuals to portray their gender identity through speech. Research reports that extend our understanding of communication characteristics that contribute to perceptions of sex in male-to-female transsexuals are identified. Current issues related to the measurement of therapy effectiveness are also presented. RECENT FINDINGS: Earlier studies confirmed that an increase in voice pitch is achievable for many transsexuals. Context-dependent encoding in the human auditory brainstem relates to hearing speech in noise: implications for developmental dyslexia.

We examined context-dependent encoding of speech in children with and without developmental dyslexia by measuring auditory brainstem responses to a speech syllable presented in a repetitive or variable context. Typically developing children showed enhanced brainstem representation of features related to voice pitch in the repetitive context, relative to the variable context. In contrast, children with developmental dyslexia exhibited impairment in their ability to modify representation in predictable contexts. From a functional perspective, we found that the extent of context-dependent encodin

Beyond pitch: temporal processing deficits in congenital amusia.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder resulting in impaired pitch perception and memory. Here we investigated whether participants with congenital amusia have deficits in temporal processing of auditory information, in addition to pitch processing deficits. Individuals with amusia (n = 19) and matched controls (n = 21) were presented with sequences of five tones in which one tone was sometimes shifted in pitch or in time, and we adaptively assessed psychophysical thresholds for detecting these shifts. Pitch thresholds of the amusia group were higher (i.e., worse) than those of the

Modeling of Breathy Voice Quality Using Pitch-strength Estimates.

BACKGROUND: The characteristic voice quality of a speaker conveys important linguistic, paralinguistic, and vocal health-related information. Pitch strength refers to the salience of pitch sensation in a sound and was recently reported to be strongly correlated with the magnitude of perceived breathiness based on a small number of voice stimuli. OBJECTIVE: The current study examined the relationship between perceptual judgments of breathiness and computational estimates of pitch strength based on the Aud-SWIPE (P-NP) algorithm for a large number of voice stimuli (330 synthetic and 57 natural)

Electrolaryngography in the assessment and treatment of incomplete mutation (puberphonia) in adults.

Puberphonia, or incomplete mutation of the adult voice, is a condition which causes the sufferer considerable distress and which carries a powerful social stigma. It can usually be treated successfully by a few sessions of speech therapy. This paper describes how these sessions may be made more effective by using laryngography to provide immediate visual feedback to the speaker in the form of the Lx waveform. Fundamental frequency distributions, measured from conversational and formally read passages, are also presented. These demonstrate the substantial lowering of pitch and reduction of pitc

Sound Guides Object Size Choices in African Penguins Through Pitch-Size Association.

The brain's ability to associate information from different sensory modalities, known as cross-modal integration, is crucial for forming a coherent perception of objects and events. When such associations follow systematic and predictable patterns, they are referred to as cross-modal correspondences. Humans, for example, tend to associate large objects with low-pitched sounds and small objects with high-pitched sounds, a phenomenon known as pitch-size cross-modal correspondence. This phenomenon has been documented in several vertebrate species, yet direct experimental evidence in avian species

Subjective postural vertical in peripheral and central vestibular disorders.

The perception of subjective postural vertical was assessed in normals and patients with peripheral and central vestibular disorders and spasmodic torticollis. The subjects were seated in a motorized gimbal with the head and torso restrained and their eyes closed. The gimbal executed 7-10 cycles of tilt around the vertical at 1.5 degrees/s in either pitch or roll. Subjects indicated when they began to feel upright and again when they began to feel tilted by an analogous 3-position joystick. Normal subjects felt upright within a sector of 5-6 degrees around vertical in pitch and roll. Five pati

The growth of and recovery from TTS in human subjects exposed to impact noise.

It is now recognized that temporary threshold shift (TTS) grows to an asymptotic level (ATS) after a prolonged exposure to steady-state and intermittent noise. Few studies have been conducted to verify this process of acquisition for impact noise. However, results obtained on animals have demonstrated that an asymptote is reached after 1-2 h of exposure. These results have been confirmed in the present study on four human subjects using a 470-ms (B duration) impact noise at a rate of 1 pps. The above pattern of acquisition has been retested on two subjects exposed to the same impact for period

Intuitive visualizations of pitch and loudness in speech.

Visualizing acoustic features of speech has proven helpful in speech therapy; however, it is as yet unclear how to create intuitive and fitting visualizations. To better understand the mappings from speech sound aspects to visual space, a large web-based experiment (n = 249) was performed to evaluate spatial parameters that may optimally represent pitch and loudness of speech. To this end, five novel animated visualizations were developed and presented in pairwise comparisons, together with a static visualization. Pitch and loudness of speech were each mapped onto either the vertical (y-axis)

Binaural Pitch Fusion in Children With Normal Hearing, Hearing Aids, and Cochlear Implants.

OBJECTIVES: Binaural pitch fusion is the perceptual integration of stimuli that evoke different pitches between the ears into a single auditory image. Adults who use hearing aids (HAs) or cochlear implants (CIs) often experience abnormally broad binaural pitch fusion, such that sounds differing in pitch by as much as 3 to 4 octaves are fused across ears, leading to spectral averaging and speech perception interference. The main goal of this study was to measure binaural pitch fusion in children with different hearing device combinations and compare results across groups and with adults. A seco

A direct comparison of voice pitch processing in acoustic and electric hearing.

In single-sided deafness patients fitted with a cochlear implant (CI) in the affected ear and preserved normal hearing in the other ear, acoustic and electric hearing can be directly compared without the need for an external control group. Although poor pitch perception is a crucial limitation when listening through CIs, it remains unclear how exactly the cortical processing of pitch information differs between acoustic and electric hearing. Hence, we separately presented both ears of 20 of these patients with vowel sequences in which the pitch contours were either repetitive or variable, whil

Two Ears Are Not Always Better than One: Mandatory Vowel Fusion Across Spectrally Mismatched Ears in Hearing-Impaired Listeners.

Hearing loss and auditory prostheses can alter auditory processing by inducing large pitch mismatches and broad pitch fusion between the two ears. Similar to integration of incongruent inputs in other sensory modalities, the mismatched, fused pitches are often averaged across ears for simple stimuli. Here, we measured parallel effects on complex stimulus integration using a new technique based on vowel classification in five bilateral hearing aid users and eight bimodal cochlear implant users. Continua between five pairs of synthetic vowels were created by varying the first formant spectral pe

Comorbidity and cognitive overlap between developmental dyslexia and congenital amusia in children.

Developmental dyslexia and congenital amusia are two specific neurodevelopmental disorders that affect reading and music perception, respectively. Similarities at perceptual, cognitive, and anatomical levels raise the possibility that a common factor is at play in their emergence, albeit in different domains. However, little consideration has been given to what extent they can co-occur. A first adult study suggested a 30% amusia rate in dyslexia and a 25% dyslexia rate in amusia (Couvignou et al., Cognitive Neuropsychology 2019). We present newly acquired data from 38 dyslexic and 38 typically

Control of Fundamental Frequency in Dysphonic Patients During Phonation and Speech.

PURPOSE: The pitch-shift reflex (PSR) is the adaptation of the fundamental frequency during phonation and speech and describes the auditory feedback control. Speakers without voice and speech disorders mostly show a compensation of the pitch change in the auditory feedback and adapt their fundamental frequency to the opposite direction. Dysphonic patients often display problems with the auditory perception and control of their voice during therapy. Our study focuses on the auditory and kinesthetic control mechanisms of patients with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) and speakers without voice and

Subgroup differences in the lexical tone mismatch negativity (MMN) among Mandarin speakers with congenital amusia.

The association/dissociation of pitch processing between music and language is a long lasting debate. We examined this music-language relationship by investigating to what extent pitch deficits in these two domains were dissociable. We focused on a special neurodevelopmental pitch disorder - congenital amusia, which primarily affects musical pitch processing. Recent research has also revealed lexical tone deficits in speech among amusics. Approximately one-third of Mandarin amusics exhibits behavioural difficulties in lexical tone perception, which is known as tone agnosia. Using mismatch nega

Biomechanics of windmill softball pitching with implications about injury mechanisms at the shoulder and elbow.

Underhand pitching has received minimal attention in the sports medicine literature. This may be due to the perception that, compared with overhead pitching, the underhand motion creates less stress on the arm, which results in fewer injuries. The purpose of this study was to calculate kinematic and kinetic parameters for the pitching motion used in fast pitch softball. Eight female fast pitch softball pitchers were recorded with a four-camera system (200 Hz). The results indicated that high forces and torques were experienced at the shoulder and elbow during the delivery phase. Peak compressi

[Experiences with the implantation of a multichannel electrode in the acoustic nerve].

The authors developed a surgical approach to the acoustic nerve enabling the introduction of an electrode into the acoustic nerve. A multichannel electrode was implanted by this method in a deaf patient. The receiver casing for percutaneous transmission was fixed in the mastoid. Encouraging hearing results were obtained over a period of two months by electrical stimulation of the acoustic nerve.

Hungarian adaptation of the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory: reliability and validity.

The objective of this study was to determine the reliability and validity of the Hungarian version of the original Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI). In the study design the original THI (THI-US) was translated into Hungarian by three independent investigators. The final Hungarian version (THI-HUN) was constructed on the basis of these Hungarian interpretations and then administered to 72 patients suffering from chronic tinnitus. Construct validity was assessed using short version of Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS4 version), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) (loudness
