Neoplastic and nonneoplastic lesions in untreated (C57BL/6N x C3H/HeN)F1 (B6C3F1) mice used as controls in carcinogenesis tests were tabulated and evaluated. The most common neoplasms in 2,543 male mice were hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas. In 2,522 female mice, common tumors were lymphomas, leukemias, pulmonary adenomas and carcinomas, hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas, and pituitary adenomas. The risk of developing most neoplasms increased with the age of the mouse. Hepatocellular carcinomas metastasized in 12% of the animals with these tumors. Other than lymphomas and leukemias,

The age-related incidence of spontaneously occurring neoplasms and degenerative diseases in the F344 inbred rat strain was established from the histologic examination of tissues from 160 male and 192 female rats kept throughout their natural life-span. The most common neoplasms were leukemias (25%), mammary tumors (females, 40.6%; males, 23.1%), pituitary adenomas (females, 35.9%; males, 23.8%), and testicular interstitial cell tumors (males, 85%). Various less common neoplasms were observed: thyroid interstitial cell tumors, adrenocortical adenomas, carcinomas of the genitourinary tract, repr

Computed tomography (CT) is a common imaging modality used to evaluate for a pituitary macrotumor in dogs. However, a standard definition of a pituitary macrotumor based on imaging characteristics has not yet been established. The human definition of a pituitary mass that measures >1 cm in diameter has previously been adopted for dogs but fails to account for variability in size, breed, and skull conformation. We hypothesized that normal pituitary gland size and macrotumor size vary by skull morphology. We also hypothesized that canine pituitary macrotumors may be smaller than 1 cm. In this re

The pituitary gland serves an essential role in the activity and regulation of the endocrine system. Mass lesions within the pituitary gland account for approximately 10-15% of intracranial neoplasms. Patients with pituitary adenomas may present with endocrine dysfunction or neuro-ophthalmic pathology, resulting from compression of surrounding structures, most notably the optic chiasm. Visual deficits from chiasmal tumors may manifest as visual field defects, visual loss, diplopia, nystagmus and visual hallucinations. Visual field defects are the most commonly reported presenting visual sympto

In addition to progressive endocrine dysfunction and progressive visual loss, pituitary neoplasms may annouce their presence by the more catastrophic alternative of spontaneous tumor infarction. In two patients reported, illness due to the spontaneous infraction of pituitary tumors was heralded by sudden onset of focal headache associated with diplopia. Stupor, confusion, and evidence of increased intracranial pressure occurred without subarachnoid hemorrhage or massive extrasellar extension of tumor. One patient developed inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion with spontaneous infarctio

Spindle cell oncocytoma is a rare nonfunctioning neoplasm of the adenohypophysis, and was first described in 2002 by Roncaroli et al. In 2007, spindle cell oncocytoma has been categorized as a separate entity by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is classified as a Grade 1 tumor of the central nervous system. Spindle cell oncocytoma of pituitary gland usually occurs in adults and accounts for 0.1-0.4% of all sellar region tumors. Clinically and radiologically, they are indistinguishable from nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas. From 2002 to 2018, approximately 46 cases of spindle cell oncoc

Although pituitary adenomas are among the most frequent intracranial neoplasms, only very few have been cytogenetically analyzed. We have short-term cultured and karyotyped 28 consecutive pituitary adenomas (16 clinically nonfunctioning adenomas and 12 clinically functioning adenomas), finding a normal karyotype in 22, whereas 6 had clonal chromosome aberrations (5 nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas and 1 prolactinoma). The abnormal karyotypes were relatively simple. Most anomalies were numerical, with a structural rearrangement, t(6;19), being found in only one tumor. The most common aberratio

Using prolactin suppression (L-dopa) and provocative (thorazine) tests along with the clomid test the intactness of hypothalamico-pituitary axis was assessed in a group of eight patients with galactorrhea syndrome. Pituitary neoplasm was suspected in three cases on the basis of elevated plasma prolactin and its abnormal response to L-dopa, thorazine, and clomid tests. Trans-sphenoidal exploration of the pituitary gland in these three cases confirmed the diagnosis. In these cases, however, the commonly used parameters for evaluation of the pituitary gland (skull X ray, visual field measurement,

We have described a 39-year-old woman with Maffucci's syndrome, large mediastinal hemangiomas, infiltrating adenocarcinoma of the breast, and pituitary adenoma. This is the fifth reported case of Maffucci's syndrome with a coexistent pituitary adenoma, a frequency that cannot be explained by chance alone. There has been only one previously reported case in which the patient had a widened mediastinum, but the etiology was not discussed. Three of the four previously described patients with Maffucci's syndrome and a pituitary adenoma also had a proven or possible associated epithelial neoplasm. W

We report the case of a 34-year-old male Hispanic patient who presented with an 8-month history of polyuria and decreased libido. An evaluation revealed hypopituitarism, central diabetes insipidus, and a pituitary stalk lesion. No evidence of a neoplasm or an inflammatory/infiltrative disease was found. We treated the patient conservatively with steroid therapy. However, as a result of disease progression, transsphenoidal surgery was performed to obtain tissue for a pathological analysis. Histopathology revealed an intrasellar germinoma, confirmed by immunochemistry. Due to localized disease,

The sellar region is the site of a large number of pathological entities arising from the pituitary and adjacent anatomical structures, including brain, blood vessels, nerves and meninges. The surgical pathology of this area requires the accurate identification of neoplastic lesions, including pituitary adenoma and carcinoma, craniopharyngioma, neurological neoplasms, germ cell tumours, haematological malignancies and metastases, as well as non-neoplastic lesions such as cysts, hyperplasias and inflammatory disorders. This review provides a practical approach to the diagnosis of pituitary spec

Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant disorder commonly associated with tumor development in the parathyroid glands, pancreas, and pituitary gland. While pituitary adenomas are frequently observed in MEN1 patients, the presence of additional tumors within the pituitary gland is unusual. Moreover, the co-occurrence of a pituitary adenoma with an atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (ATRT) has not been previously documented. ATRT is a rare, aggressive neoplasm predominantly affecting young children and is typically associated with inactivating mutations in the SMARCB1 o

Diabetes insipidus is associated with histiocytosis X in approximately 50% of cases with multiple lesions that involve both intracranial and extracranial structures. Although approximately 8% of cases of diabetes insipidus in children are caused by involvement of the hypothalamus or pituitary infundibulum (or both) by histiocytosis X, diabetes insipidus can be the initial manifestation in many disorders most commonly, intracranial neoplasms. Herein we report a case of isolated histiocytosis X of the pituitary gland in a child for whom medical assistance was sought because of symptoms of diabet

The pituitary gland, as a central regulator of endocrine function, may be affected by a wide range of biologically derived harmful substances present in nature. While most available literature focuses on neoplasms, trauma or autoimmune disorders, the potential impact of natural toxins and poisons on pituitary function remains underexplored. This narrative review addresses the effects of acute or chronic exposure to harmful agents originating from the five biological kingdoms-Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Monera, and Protista-on the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. Drawing on clinical reports, experime

Pituitary adenomas presenting in uncommon anatomical locations are commonly misdiagnosed. Dramatic clinical presentation with hemorrhage and infarction, along with a lack of endocrine symptoms may further confound the diagnosis in some patients as illustrated in one of our two previously reported cases of non-small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the sinonasal tract and nasopharynx. This report presents the clinical progress of case number 2, which has a revised diagnosis of giant lactotroph pituitary adenoma. Common clinical, radiological and pathological pitfalls in diagnosis of neuroendocr

Severe bilateral mydriasis and bilaterally decreased vision were observed in a 23-year-old crossbred warmblood gelding with a history of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction. Ten years after the onset of clinical signs, it was killed humanely because of worsening of clinical signs and loss of therapeutic responsiveness. Postmortem examination of the head was performed to confirm the suspected pituitary neoplasm and to investigate secondary oculomotor lesions. Pathomorphologic examination revealed an expansile space-occupying pituitary adenoma and degenerative changes in the preganglionic ocul

Choriocarcinoma is an aggressive obstetric or gynecological neoplasm with a high malignant potential. It is a form of gestational trophoblastic disease and often secondary to hydatidiform mole, and intrauterine or ectopic pregnancy. Choriocarcinoma has a proclivity to metastasize to the lung, vagina, pelvis or liver in over 50% of patients, which always occurs in the early stage of the disease. With an appropriate amount of chemotherapy, the tumor may be treated effectively. However, pituitary metastasis of choriocarcinoma is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, no cases of choriocarc

In Cushing disease, a pituitary corticotroph neoplasm causes secondary adrenal hypercortisolism. This condition has known morbidity and mortality, underscoring the need for an efficient and accurate diagnostic approach. An 11 p.m. salivary cortisol level is a modern, simple initial screening tool for the diagnosis of Cushing syndrome. Confirmation with a 24-hour urinary free cortisol test and/or a low-dose dexamethasone suppression test may subsequently be performed. Patients with repeatedly equivocal results should be reevaluated after several months or undergo a corticotropin-releasing hormo

A 24-year-old woman with severe Cushing's syndrome was found to have corticotroph cell pituitary adenoma arising within a benign cystic ovarian teratoma. The patient manifested sustained hypercortisolemia and lack of suppression of either adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) or cortisol production. There was no evidence of a pituitary mass or secretion of other hormones. After careful clinical evaluation, no other tumor masses were found. Resection of the ovarian tumor led to normalization of ACTH and cortisol levels. Densely granulated corticotroph tumor cells with prominent Type I microfilaments and i

PURPOSE: Non-functioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs) are benign pituitary neoplasms that do not cause a hormonal hypersecretory syndrome. An improved understanding of their epidemiology, clinical presentation and diagnosis is needed.
METHOD: A literature review was performed using Pubmed to identify research reports and clinical case series on NFPAs.
RESULTS: They account for 14-54% of pituitary adenomas and have a prevalence of 7-41.3/100,000 population. Their standardized incidence rate is 0.65-2.34/100,000 and the peak occurence is from the fourth to the eighth decade. The clinical spectru
