Anterior plagiocephaly with contralateral superior oblique overaction.

Anterior plagiocephaly is a craniofacial anomaly related to premature unilateral synostosis. We present three cases of anterior plagiocephaly with contralateral superior oblique dysfunction. A detailed ophthalmic examination, including orthoptic assessment for the extraocular muscle misalignment, with appropriate radio-imaging was done in all the three cases. All of them showed a right-sided plagiocephaly, with overaction of the left superior oblique muscle, alternating exotropia and a dissociated vertical deviation. Two underwent surgical correction of squint. Both were well aligned after squ

High-frequency ultrasound confirmation of positional plagiocephaly.

OBJECT: Positional plagiocephaly has become an increasing problem for pediatricians and craniofacial specialists. Diagnosis is commonly based on history and clinical features, but may be difficult in some cases when characteristic features are missing and radiographic studies seem to be necessary. Near-field high-frequency ultrasound has been used to evaluate the sonographic findings of suture anatomy and confirm the diagnosis of positional plagiocephaly as well as provide information of prognostic value. METHODS: The authors report on 100 pediatric patients between the ages of 2 and 13 month

Screening for torticollis and plagiocephaly: The role of the pediatrician.

The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of providing a standardized screening examination method to a group of attending and resident physicians on the rate of torticollis and plagiocephaly diagnoses, the age at time of diagnosis, and the attitudes and practice patterns of the physicians. All subjects were given a standardized screening procedure by verbal instruction and handout, and also completed a pre- and post-intervention questionnaire, which assessed the subjects' practice regarding the diagnosis and management of torticollis and plagiocephaly. A retrospective chart review

"A National Review of Crowdfunding for Plagiocephaly Helmets".

ObjectiveCustom prescription helmets for plagiocephaly may be a significant financial burden for families, especially when not covered by insurance. This study aims to identify factors that influence the success of crowdsourcing campaigns for this therapy.DesignGoFundMe campaigns were collected by searching terms such as "plagiocephaly" and "baby helmet." Two reviewers analyzed each campaign for variables, including demographic data, story elements, and photo characteristics. Univariate logistic regression was used to determine each variable's impact on success, defined as attaining ≥75% of a

Deformational plagiocephaly: The case for an evolutionary mismatch.

Lay Summary: In industrialized societies some babies develop flattening of the back part of their head. It is thought that this comes from sleeping supine, which has been shown to be the safest option for babies. However, this explanation cannot be correct from an evolutionary standpoint: why should safe sleep come at the cost of a misshaped head? Babies in industrialized societies are generally healthy. The medical problems they may be afflicted with are usually well understood. Deformational plagiocephaly presents a notable exception. In many industrialized countries, one in six babies shows

Early neurodevelopment in infants with deformational plagiocephaly.

The objective of this study was to characterize the early neurodevelopmental profile of Australian infants with deformational plagiocephaly (DP). Twenty-one infants with a confirmed diagnosis of DP (mean age, 7.9 months; SD, 2.0 months) were assessed on the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, Second Edition, before treatment. As a group, infants with DP showed significantly weaker motor skills compared with the normative population. Patients with DP did not significantly differ from normative population estimates with respect to cognitive abilities. Males with DP displayed significantly reduc

Treatment of positional plagiocephaly--helmet or no helmet?

INTRODUCTION: Positional plagiocephaly has attained widespread attention. There is a lot of data on helmet therapy available, but the natural course of the deformity has not been investigated in depth. The decision for or against helmet therapy can be controversial. This study examined the outcome of both options. METHODS: 128 infants were enrolled in this prospective, non-randomized, longitudinal study. 62 were treated with and 66 without a helmet. The initial cranial vault asymmetry index (modified CVAI) was determined at 6.3 and 6.2 months of age (SD 1.44/2.14). Follow-up took place at the

[Positional plagiocephaly in infancy: diagnosis and management].

Positional plagiocephaly in the newborn corresponds to a posterior flattening and asymetry of the head. Its incidence has significantly increased since the "back to sleep" campain in the nineteen nineties to prevent sudden infant death syndrome. The posterior deformation usually worsens during the first six months of life when the skull is susceptible to posterior constant pressure which induces the deformation. Spontaneous outcome can be favorable. Treatment is always conservative and consists in positionnal exercise, physiotherapy and osteopathy. In some cases treatment with a helmet is reco

Neurodevelopmental delays in children with deformational plagiocephaly.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine whether, in fact, infants with deformational plagiocephaly, or plagiocephaly without synostosis, demonstrated cognitive and psychomotor developmental delays when compared with a standardized population. Through this study, we chose to expand upon our earlier findings from 2001 on patients with deformational plagiocephaly. METHODS: The study population includes a total of 110 consecutive patients, prospectively followed then retrospectively reviewed. Each infant was assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development-II scoring system.

Paleopathological findings of dry skulls with plagiocephaly.

In literature, plagiocephaly is defined as abnormal asymmetrical head shape with unilateral flattening of the anterior and/or posterior part of the skull. It is classified as synostotic or deformational. Synostotic plagiocephaly is the result of premature unilateral fusion of neurocranim sutures. Positional plagiocephaly is caused by asymmetrical intrauterine and/or postnatal external forces. The authors report findings of both types of plagiocephaly in the dry skull collection from pertaining Broumov Ossuary (13th-18th century), Czech Republic. In the paper, the incidence of paleopathological

Torticollis and plagiocephaly in infancy: therapeutic strategies.

BACKGROUND: Asymmetry in infancy is a diagnosis with a large spectrum of features, expressing an abnormal shape of parts of the body or unequal postures and movements, which might be structural and/or functional, with localized or generalized expression. PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study is to highlight different therapeutic aspects of the most occurring asymmetries in infancy: congenital muscular torticollis, positional torticollis and plagiocephaly, based on best evidence in current literature. RESULTS: A flow chart is presented showing different pathways in therapeutic strategies,

In search of causative factors of deformational plagiocephaly.

This is a preliminary study of 37 infants with deformational plagiocephaly. In this first effort to create a profile of factors that may contribute to the onset and progress of developmental plagiocephaly, parents were interviewed concerning selected practices before and immediately after the birth of their infants. Results of the study do not reveal a clear or concise pattern of factors that may contribute to this condition. There needs to be additional research on the benefits and potential hazards of sleep position to infants as one of the factors that may contribute to deformational plagio

Avoiding the sequela associated with deformational plagiocephaly.

Over the last decade, infants with deformities in the craniofacial skeleton have been seen at our craniofacial center, and similar observations have been noted in infants seen for evaluation and management after birth, where there are not any evident pathological findings such as craniosynostosis or another known genetic disorder. The known condition of deformational plagiocephaly has been related to a sequela of the infants being placed on their back for sleep. The change in the position of the infants to sleep on their back was altered from the traditional position, where infants were placed
