Medicinal plants and Alzheimer's disease: from ethnobotany to phytotherapy.

The use of complementary medicines, such as plant extracts, in dementia therapy varies according to the different cultural traditions. In orthodox Western medicine, contrasting with that in China and the Far East for example, pharmacological properties of traditional cognitive- or memory-enhancing plants have not been widely investigated in the context of current models of Alzheimer's disease. An exception is Gingko biloba in which the gingkolides have antioxidant, neuroprotective and cholinergic activities relevant to Alzheimer's disease mechanisms. The therapeutic efficacy of Ginkgo extracts

Harnessing intranasal delivery of natural plant extracts and tyramine-modified hyaluronan hydrogels for neuroprotection in neurodegenerative diseases.

Neurodegenerative disorders are characterized by oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, calling for innovative therapeutic approaches with effective brain recovery. In this study, hyaluronic acid-tyramine (HA-Tyr) was synthesized via horseradish peroxidase/hydrogen peroxide crosslinking and characterized as intranasal carrier of Rosmarinus officinalis and Mentha rotundifolia extracts. Physicochemical analyses confirmed rheological stability, injectability, and mucoadhesive capacity, together with swelling profiles suitable for nasal mucosa. The functionalization with natural extracts provided

Total physical activity, plant-based diet and neurodegenerative diseases: A prospective cohort study of the UK biobank.

INTRODUCTION: Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) result from a complex interplay of genetic, environmental and aging factors. A balanced diet and adequate physical activity (PA) are recognized as pivotal components among modifiable environmental factors. The independent impact on NDD incidence has been previously debated. This investigation seeks to delineate the association between PA and NDDs across various levels of adherence to a plant-based diet. METHODS: In this study, a cohort of 368,934 participants from the UK Biobank was analyzed. Total physical activity (TPA) levels and healthful pl

Linkage between a plant-based diet and age-related eye diseases: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

CONTEXT: An increased risk of age-related eye disease has been observed in individuals lacking a balanced diet. Following a plant-based diet may result in nutritional insufficiencies and negatively affect health if an effort is not made to ensure the consumption of fortified foods or specific supplements. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to characterize the relationship between plant-based diets and age-related ocular outcomes among adults. DATA SOURCES: A comprehensive literature review was performed using the MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, and PubMed databases up until December 19, 20

Green Plant Pigment, Chlorophyllin, Ameliorates Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Diseases (NAFLDs) Through Modulating Gut Microbiome in Mice.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLDs) along with metabolic syndrome and Type-2 diabetes (T2D) are increasingly prevalent worldwide. Without an effective resolution, simple hepatic steatosis may lead to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), characterized by hepatocyte damage, chronic inflammation, necrosis, fatty degeneration, and cirrhosis. The gut microbiome is vital for metabolic homeostasis. Conversely, dysbiosis contributes to metabolic diseases including NAFLD. Specifically, diet composition is critical for the enterotype of gut microbiota. We reasoned that green pigment rich in veg

Plant-based vaccine research development against viral diseases with emphasis on Ebola virus disease: A review study.

Ebola virus infection results in the fast onset of severe acute haemorrhagic fever with high mortality. The Ebola virus is labelled as a category A pathogen. Vaccines against the Ebola virus (EBOV) are essential for everyone, and an expansion in the arena of vaccine synthesis; especially, plant-based vaccine development has drawn attention. To express the heterologous protein for plant-based vectors, both RNA and DNA viruses have been adapted. Among the different approaches of plant-based vaccine technologies, the agroinfiltration method, which was initially established to investigate plant-vi

Advances in Genome Editing for Plant Disease Resistance Breeding.

Plant diseases remain a major constraint to crop productivity and global food security. Conventional breeding has long been used to develop resistant cultivars through the introgression of resistance traits from wild relatives and the selection of favorable phenotypes. However, this process is often slow and limited by linkage drag, known genetic diversity, intrinsic genetic limitations, and the rapid evolution of pathogen populations. Molecular breeding strategies, including marker-assisted selection and genomic selection, have improved the precision of resistance breeding but still rely on e

TiO2 nanomaterial promotes plant growth and disease resistance.

TiO2 nanomaterials can promote plant growth and enhance disease resistance. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. This study applied TiO2 to promote the growth of wheat, soybean, tobacco, cucumber, and corn. Genetic analysis using macro-element transporter rice mutants in rice revealed that growth promotion induced by TiO2 was dependent on potassium transporter (AKT1), nitrate transporter 1.1B (NRT1.1B), ammonium transporter 1 (AMT1), and phosphate transporter 8 (PT8). TiO2 also enhanced chlorophyll accumulation, and growth promotion was inhibited in the chlorophyll biosynthesis r

Plant-Based Diets across the Spectrum of Kidney Disease.

Diet is gaining traction as a major CKD-related risk factor for death and disability. Furthermore, a "Работает" diet in patients with CKD is associated with reduced mortality. The data to be discussed support diet as the foundational, "food integrated with pharmacologic therapy," approach to management of individuals with CKD, and those at risk for it. This is the reverse of the current approach in which pharmacologic therapy is considered as foundational to CKD management. In this review, we will discuss the following: ( 1 ) overview of plant diet approaches-discuss different types of Plant-Ba

Plant-based diets in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Dietary protein restriction has been considered to be a nutritional-related strategy to reduce risk for end-stage kidney disease among patients with non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, there is insufficient evidence to recommend a particular type of protein to slow down the CKD progression. Recently, various plant-based diets could demonstrate some additional benefits such as a blood pressure-lowering effect, a reduction of metabolic acidosis as well as hyperphosphatemia, and gut-derived uremic toxins. Furthermore, the former concerns about the risk of undernutrition

Plant-based diets for kidney disease prevention and treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Plant-based diets are associated with a lower risk of hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mortality. Using the most recent evidence, we critically appraised the role of plant-based diets in primary and secondary prevention of chronic kidney disease (CKD) with a focus on key nutritional factors (dietary acid load, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and fiber). RECENT FINDINGS: In healthy individuals, observational studies found that greater intake of plant protein and higher adherence to plant-based diets (overall, healthful, and provegetarian) was associated wit

Hyperkalemia and Plant-Based Diets in Chronic Kidney Disease.

Traditional dietary guidelines for patients with kidney disease recommend restriction of plant foods due to concerns about hyperkalemia and associated adverse events. Studies conducted over several decades have shown that the basis for these guidelines does not match the evidence. Serum potassium levels can be elevated in patients with reduced kidney function after consumption of foods with potassium-based additives or with highly concentrated potassium content such as juices, dried fruit, or purees. However, plant foods may have certain qualities that may blunt potassium retention including t

Plant-Based Diets for Kidney Disease: A Guide for Clinicians.

In recent years, a growing body of evidence has emerged on the benefits of plant-based diets for the prevention and treatment of lifestyle diseases. In parallel, data now exist regarding the treatment of chronic kidney disease and its most common complications with this dietary pattern. Improving the nutrient quality of foods consumed by patients by including a higher proportion of plant-based foods while reducing total and animal protein intake may reduce the need for or complement nephroprotective medications, improve kidney disease complications, and perhaps favorably affect disease progres

Medicinal Plants in the Treatment of Peptic Ulcer Disease: A Review.

Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD) is the most common disorder of the stomach and duodenum, which is associated with Helicobacter pylori infection. PUD occurs due to an imbalance between offensive and defensive factors and Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI), Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) and antibiotics are frequently used for the treatment. Recently, medicinal plants have emerged as efficacious, safe and widely available alternative therapies for PUD. The aim of this review was to study the medicinal plants and phytochemicals, which have been used for PUD treatment to evaluate the potential

Vitamin B1 functions as an activator of plant disease resistance.

Vitamin B(1) (thiamine) is an essential nutrient for humans. Vitamin B(1) deficiency causes beriberi, which disturbs the central nervous and circulatory systems. In countries in which rice (Oryza sativa) is a major food, thiamine deficiency is prevalent because polishing of rice removes most of the thiamine in the grain. We demonstrate here that thiamine, in addition to its nutritional value, induces systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in plants. Thiamine-treated rice, Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), and vegetable crop plants showed resistance to fungal, bacterial, and viral infections. Thi

Legionnaires' disease outbreak in an automobile engine manufacturing plant.

We investigated 4 cases of legionnaires' disease (LD) reported among workers at an Ohio automotive plant in March 2001. A "confirmed" case of LD was defined as x-ray-confirmed pneumonia and a confirmatory laboratory test. A "possible" case of LD was defined as elevated titers of antibody and respiratory symptoms. Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (LP1) was isolated from 1 case patient. Legionella was isolated from 18 (9%) of 197 environmental samples; 3 isolates were LP1 but did not match the case isolate. We conducted a case-control study; 17 case patients with confirmed or possible LD and 8

Deep vision in agriculture: assessing the function of YOLO in the classification of plant leaf diseases (PLDs).

Plant leaf diseases (PLDs) can continue to be a significant problem in the agricultural sector, leading to significant losses in production and jeopardizing food security. Early detection is essential, and recent achievements in the domain of deep learning (DL) have made automated high-accuracy solutions possible. The most popular and commonly used of these is the You Only Look Once (YOLO) family of object detection models, which have been proposed to detect plant diseases in real time. This review presents a new and in-depth synthesis of YOLO-based methods, including YOLOv1 to YOLOv10 and the
