Oomycetes cause hundreds of destructive plant diseases, threatening agricultural production and food security. These fungus-like eukaryotes show multiple sporulation pattern including the production of sporangium, zoospore, chlamydospore and oospore, which are critical for their survival, dispersal and infection on hosts. Recently, genomic and genetic technologies have greatly promoted the study of molecular mechanism of sporulation in the genus Phytophthora and Peronophythora. In this paper, we characterize the types of asexual and sexual spores and review latest progress of these two genera.

A detailed site investigation of a eucalypt nursery suffering disease losses revealed the causal agent to be Phytophthora boodjera. The pathogen was detected in vegetation surrounding the nursery production area, including the lawn, under the production benches during the growing season, and, most importantly, from plant debris in used trays. However, it was not found in the container substrate, water supplies, or production equipment or on the workers themselves. The sterilization methods used by the nursery were shown to be ineffective, indicating that a more rigorous method was required. Bo

BACKGROUND: Invasive species can have devastating effects on native ecosystems and therefore impose a significant threat to human welfare. The introduction rate of invasive species has accelerated dramatically in recent times due to human activity (anthropogenic effects), with a steadily growing pool of widespread tramp species. We present an in-depth analysis of four pantropical species of Xyleborus ambrosia beetles (Xyleborus volvulus, Xyleborus perforans, Xyleborus ferrugineus, and Xyleborus affinis) with similar ecology (fungus cultivation in dead wood), reproductive biology (permanent inb

The increasing global habitat fragmentation has led to a marked decline in landscape connectivity, posing a severe threat to biodiversity. However, our understanding of how landscape connectivity influences biodiversity, particularly for plant diversity, remains notably limited. Taking the meadow of Poyang Lake as a case and comprehensively considering the ecological processes of water level change and species dispersal, this study firstly applied the landscape pattern metrics and the graph-theoretic connectivity metrics to measure the dynamics of meadow structural connectivity and functional

Pathology to vertebrate hosts has emerged repeatedly in the order Ophiostomatales. Occasional infections have been observed in Sporothrix mexicana at a low level of virulence, while the main pathogenic species cluster in a derived clade around S. schenckii s.str. In this paper, phylogeny and epidemiology of the members of this clade were investigated for 99 clinical and 36 environmental strains using four genetic loci, viz. rDNA ITS and partial CAL, TEF1, and TEF3; data are compared with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) genotyping. The four main species of the pathogenic clade wer

Bats provide key ecosystem services, yet their dual role in subterranean habitats remains understudied. Frugivorous species such as Artibeus planirostris can act both as seed dispersers in surface environments and as sources of organic matter in caves through guano deposition. We investigated these functions in Toca do Morrinho Cave (Bahia, Brazil), combining captive experiments and field monitoring to assess guano production, diet, deposition patterns, and seed fate. Bats consumed fruits from 11 plant species and produced an average of 3.24 g of dry guano per day. Most feces (91.1%) were depo

The formation of bare patches in degraded alpine meadows represents a critical bottleneck for ecological restoration. Potentilla anserina can rapidly cover exposed soil surfaces owing to its strong capacity for asexual reproduction. However, whether its secondary ecological functions extend beyond physical coverage remains unclear. In August 2024, rhizosphere and bulk soil samples were collected from both bare patches and P. anserina-colonized patches and analyzed via 16S rRNA and ITS high-throughput sequencing. The results revealed that the ameliorative effects of plants on soil physicochemic

Soils support substantial biodiversity that is crucial for ecosystem functioning. Nematodes represent one of the most abundant and diverse groups of soil metazoans, playing essential roles in soil food webs and various ecosystem functions. However, the scale-dependent factors associated with their diversity remain poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to examine the factors associated with soil nematode α-, β-, and γ-diversity across multiple spatial scales and elucidate nematode community assembly processes. We assessed soil nematode communities in 691 soil samples from seven primary for

With the advance of metatranscriptomic sequencing, an increasing number of symbiotic viruses have been recognized in insects. These insect symbiotic viruses not only modulate key aspects of insect biology, including physiology, fecundity, development, and behavior, but also influence the vector competence of arthropods for transmitting arboviruses. The majority of such vectors belong to the orders Hemiptera and Diptera, which transmit a wide spectrum of plant and animal arboviruses. Although insect symbiotic viruses usually replicate exclusively within insect cells, several symbiotic viruses h

The eggs of stick and leaf insects (Phasmatodea) bear strong resemblance to plant seeds and are commonly dispersed by females dropping them to the litter. Here we report a novel egg-deposition mode for Phasmatodea performed by an undescribed Vietnamese species of the enigmatic subfamily Korinninae that produces a complex egg case (ootheca), containing numerous eggs in a highly ordered arrangement. This novel egg-deposition mode is most reminiscent of egg cases produced by members of unrelated insect orders, e.g. by praying mantises (Mantodea) and tortoise beetles (Coleoptera: Cassidinae). Ooth

Although the potential of microbial inoculants for sustainable agriculture and environmental restoration has been widely recognized, their field performance remains highly variable and often unpredictable. Current research and development frameworks for microbial inoculants primarily focus on their plant growth-promoting functions and metabolic traits, often overlooking the ecological processes that determine whether introduced strains can successfully disperse, access, and establish within the rhizosphere. Increasing evidence suggests that successful dispersal and establishment cannot be assu

Induced plant defences regulated by jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) initiate a cascade of effects, from defence expression to changes in arthropod community structure and species interactions that can ultimately influence plant fitness. Yet the long-term consequences of these processes remain poorly understood, particularly in perennial tropical systems. We investigated how activation of JA and SA signalling pathways shapes arthropod community composition and plant reproductive success in Trichogoniopsis adenantha (Asteraceae), a glandular trichome-bearing shrub native to the Brazil

Annihilation of biofilm forming bacterial pathogens is a challenging aspect in seafood and aquaculture industries. Microbes growing as biofilms cause deleterious effects on food products leading to food spoilage or loss of shelf life. As a measure to fight biofilms, agents that prevent/disrupt biofilms are recurrently screened. The study exemplifies the bactericidal and biofilm disruption potentials of a plant derived compound, diphyllin, against fish pathogens that colonizes Oreochromis mossambicus and Oreochromis niloticus. Precisely, diphyllin disrupted Salmonella typhi biofilms by triggeri

High-dispersed magnetized iron preparations of various coercive force and its preparations with Ag, Au, Pt obtained by thermochemical method have been studied for their effect on plants and bacteria pathogenic for animals. It is established that magnetized iron intensifies antibacterial effect of certain metals. Of the studied preparations only high-dispersed Fe-Ag had distinctly expressed bactericidal effect. Other preparations had weak antibacterial effect or had not it at all. All the preparations have strong adsorption capacity.

The ability of nanoparticles from the plant protein zein to protect lutein from light degradation was studied under various conditions. Lutein-zein nanoparticles were synthesized, after zein purification, by anti-solvent precipitation. Particle sizes, ranging from 25 to 75 nm, measured by dynamic light scattering, were tuned by varying zein concentrations in the solvent phase (before anti-solvent precipitation), which was linked to the encapsulation efficiency. However, changes in particle sizes did not result in significant changes in photo-stability. Zein-lutein nanoparticles showed increase

The objective of this study is to describe the seasonal differences in SO2 ground-level fumigations from a power plant situated on very complex terrain in the Iberian Peninsula within the Western Mediterranean Basin (WMB). The study area extends more than 80 km around the power plant on very complex semi-arid terrain. Considering different plume-rise schemes, by experimentation and modelling this study attempts to characterise the seasonal differences in both the plume footprint 80 km around the power plant and the turbulent regime (diurnal or nocturnal) driving the main contribution to the ac

Constructed wetlands (CWs) depend on plant-microbe associations for pollutant transformation, yet the processes linking macrophyte identity to rhizosphere microbiome assembly remain insufficiently resolved. We compared bacterial communities associated with C. articulatus (Ca) and T. geniculata (Tg) roots with an unplanted treatment (Up) in pilot-scale CWs on the Colombian Caribbean coast. Bacterial communities were characterized by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Co-occurrence networks, taxon-environment correlations, and the phylogenetic bin-based null model iCAMP were used to assess commu

Species traits may serve as proxies for ecological mechanisms that drive invasion success and, therefore, are a promising framework for investigating invasion processes and predicting future outcomes of species that have been recently introduced. However, although many efforts exist to document species traits of plants, a centralized database of invasive plant species in the United States is not currently available. We have compiled traits data for 1024 invasive plants in the United States across 28 species characteristics, including functional morphological, reproductive, and dispersal traits

1. Environmental heterogeneity can produce effects that cascade up to higher trophic levels and affect species interactions. We hypothesized that grazing-dependent habitat heterogeneity and grazing-independent host plant heterogeneity would influence directly and indirectly a host-parasitoid interaction in a woodland habitat. 2. Thistles were planted randomly in 20 birch woodlands, half of which are grazed by cattle. The abundances of two species of seed herbivore and their shared parasitoid were measured, and related to habitat and host-plant heterogeneity. 3. The presence of cattle grazing c
