Convergent mechanisms, divergent strategies: a comparison of nectar intake between a generalist and a specialist bat species.

Nectar-feeding bats exhibit a range of specialized adaptations that allow them to extract nectar from flowers efficiently. These adaptations include tongue morphological traits and feeding strategies that reflect varying degrees of specialization to nectarivory. While some aspects of the drinking mechanics of highly specialized nectar bats have been studied, little is known about the feeding behaviors of non-specialized species such as Phyllostomus discolor. This study compares the nectar extraction behaviors of P. discolor and the specialized Anoura geoffroyi, examining morphological and biom

The sugar oxidation cascade: convergent metabolic strategies in hovering vertebrate nectarivores.

The smallest flying vertebrate pollinators, including hummingbirds and nectar bats, exist at an energetic extreme. Nectarivores must balance the need for high rates of metabolic power output to sustain comparatively high costs of thermoregulation and the intense energetic demands of forward and hovering flight with the constraint against building and carrying large, heavy energy stores. Work over the past half century has quantified metabolic rate and daily energy requirements for these animals and revealed that hummingbirds and nectar bats achieve energy homeostasis through exceptional physio

Single-cell transcriptome analysis of the in vivo response to viral infection in the cave nectar bat Eonycteris spelaea.

Bats are reservoir hosts of many zoonotic viruses with pandemic potential. We utilized single-cell transcriptome sequencing (scRNA-seq) to analyze the immune response in bat lungs upon in vivo infection with a double-stranded RNA virus, Pteropine orthoreovirus PRV3M. Bat neutrophils were distinguished by high basal IDO1 expression. NK cells and T cells were the most abundant immune cells in lung tissue. Three distinct CD8+ effector T cell populations could be delineated by differential expression of KLRB1, GFRA2, and DPP4. Select NK and T clusters increased expression of genes involved in T ce

Foliar striping and floral traits are correlated with higher reproductive output in crimson monkeyflowers.

In plants, ecological interactions such as pollination depend on whole-plant phenotypes, where coordinated variation among vegetative, floral, and reproductive traits can shape reproductive success. However, empirical studies linking integrated phenotypes that include non-floral traits to reproductive outcomes within populations remain limited. While prior work has shown that crimson monkeyflowers exhibit heritable variation in foliar anthocyanin striping, the functional significance of the trait has been thus far unknown. Using plants derived from natural populations, we conducted field and g

Floral dynamics in the protandrous flowers of Bauhinia variegata (Fabaceae): phase-specific morphology, scent, and nectar production.

Protandry in Bauhinia variegata is expressed through coordinated changes in floral morphology, scent composition, secretory activity, and nectar presentation, whereas petal reflectance remains stable; molecular docking further indicates that key phase-associated volatiles are structurally compatible with a bee odourant-binding protein, supporting mechanistic plausibility of olfactory detectability without demonstrating behavioral attraction. Bauhinia variegata exhibits protandrous flowers in which floral morphology, scent production, and nectar presentation change through anthesis. Here, we ex

Cyanogenesis of wild lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) is an efficient direct defence in nature.

In natural systems plants face a plethora of antagonists and thus have evolved multiple defence strategies. Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) is a model plant for studies of inducible indirect anti-herbivore defences including the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and extrafloral nectar (EFN). In contrast, studies on direct chemical defence mechanisms as crucial components of lima beans' defence syndrome under natural conditions are nonexistent. In this study, we focus on the cyanogenic potential (HCNp; concentration of cyanogenic glycosides) as a crucial parameter determining lim

Effects of flowering plant's patch size on species composition of pollinator communities, foraging strategies, and resource partitioning in bumblebees (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

In 4 common Middle-European mainly bumblebee-pollinated plant species (Impatiens glandulifera, Echium vulgare, Aconitum napellus, Symphytum officinale) the influence of patch size on species composition of the pollinator community was studied. Short-tongued species were most dominant in large patches, while small patches were frequented by middle- and long-tongued bumblebees. This phenomenon was extremely obvious in Symphytum officinale and Aconitum napellus, where short-tongued species had bitten a hole in nearly every flower of large patches. Long-tongued species were forced to small patches

Plant defence as a complex and changing phenotype throughout ontogeny.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Ontogenetic changes in anti-herbivore defences are common and result from variation in resource availability and herbivore damage throughout plant development. However, little is known about the simultaneous changes of multiple defences across the entire development of plants, and how such changes affect plant damage in the field. The aim of this study was to assess if changes in the major types of plant resistance and tolerance can explain natural herbivore damage throughout plant ontogeny. METHODS: An assessment was made of how six defensive traits, including physical,

All the Colors of the Rainbow: Diversification of Flower Color and Intraspecific Color Variation in the Genus Iris.

Floral color plays a key role as visual signaling and is therefore of great importance in shaping plant-pollinator interactions. Iris (Iridaceae), a genus comprising over 300 species and named after the Greek goddess of the colorful rainbow, is famous for its dazzling palette of flower colors and patterns, which vary considerably both within and among species. Despite the large variation of flower color in Iris, little is known about the phylogenetic and ecological contexts of floral color. Here, we seek to resolve the evolution of flower color in the genus Iris in a macroevolutionary framewor

Attraction of Aphidius ervi (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) to Sweet Alyssum and Assessment of Plant Resources Effects on their Fitness.

The green peach aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is one of the most economically important aphid species affecting crops worldwide. Since many natural enemies of this aphid have been recorded, biological control of this pest might be a viable alternative to manage it. Selected plant species in field margins might help to provide the natural enemies with food sources to enhance their fitness. This study aimed to investigate if sweet alyssum, Lobularia maritima (L.) (Brassicaceae), is a potential food source for the parasitoid Aphidius ervi Haliday (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) a

Efficacy and safety of PD-1 blockade plus long-course chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced rectal cancer (NECTAR): a multi-center phase 2 study.

Adding PD-1 blockade in the neoadjuvant regimens for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) patients with microsatellite stable (MSS) / mismatch repair-proficient (pMMR) tumors is an attractive, but debatable strategy. This phase 2, multicenter, prospective, single-arm study enrolled patients from 6 centers from June 2021 to November 2022. Locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC, cT3-4aN0M0 and cT1-4aN1-2M0) patients aged ≥18 years with the distance from distal border of tumor to anal verge ≤10 cm (identified by Magnetic Resonance Imaging) were qualified for inclusion. The patients received long-c

The Physicochemical Characteristics of Gelam Honey and Its Outcome on the Female Reproductive Tissue of Sprague-Dawley Rats: A Preliminary Study.

Gelam honey (GH) is a prized natural product synthesized from the nectar of flowers from Gelam trees (Melaleuca sp.). Gelam is an evergreen tree species that grows in tropical regions such as Malaysia. GH is a multifloral honey with proven antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the beneficial effect of GH on female reproductive tissue has yet to be substantiated. Herein, we investigated the effects of GH administration on the uterine and vaginal epithelial thickness of sexually mature Sprague-Dawley rats. Epithelia thickness could be an indicator of an atrophy manifesting as a

Pomolic acid as a stable botanical marker for authenticating loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) monofloral honey.

Monofloral honey from Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl. (MH-Erj) is highly valued for its distinctive flavor and potential health-promoting properties. However, its high economic value makes it particularly susceptible to adulteration, highlighting the need for a scientific and reliable method for authenticity verification. In this study, non-targeted metabolomic profiling was conducted using Orbitrap LC-MS on samples collected throughout the loquat plant-to-honey transformation process, including leaves, flowers, floral nectar, bee crop contents, and mature honey. Among twelve plant-derived

Desert Milkweed (Asclepias erosa) as a Midsummer Resource for Arthropod Communities in the Great Basin Desert.

In arid ecosystems, consumer communities are often structured by strong temporal fluctuations in resource availability. During midsummer in the Great Basin Desert, high temperatures and declining soil moisture cause many early-season plants to senesce, potentially concentrating arthropod activity on the few species that remain physiologically active. We characterized arthropod assemblages associated with the desert milkweed (Asclepias erosa) to evaluate its potential role as a focal plant during this seasonal period of reduced floral and vegetative productivity. Arthropods were surveyed on ran

Effects of rose pollen and nectar on body size and ovarian development of Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), is an omnivorous pest feeding on plant tissues and floral resources, including pollen and nectar, and can consume mite eggs. Its growth and reproduction are strongly influenced by diet quality. Compared with rose petals alone, a standardized whole-flower diet contains reproductive organs and therefore provides additional floral resources. In this study, a standardized whole-flower diet, rose petals, and kidney bean leaves as a host-plant control were used to investigate whether differences in floral resource availability affect thri

Exploiting nectar and blood feeding cues and phagostimulants to optimise Attractive Targeted Sugar Baits against a sand fly vector of leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis presents a major public health problem for a large number of countries requiring effective integrated management of the vector, sand flies, for sustained control. Such strategies need to be economically and environmentally sustainable and adaptable to the behaviour of local vectors. One such tool is Attractive Targeted Sugar Baits (ATSB) that exploit the necessity of sand flies to acquire sugars between bloodmeals. Here we explored the kinetics and cues for sugar and blood feeding to improve the efficacy of ATSBs against sand flies. METHODS: A fluorescent assay was d

The intensity and spatial dispersion of within-plant herbivory drive trait-specific resistance and tolerance in wild cotton.

PREMISE: Herbivory induces complex plant defensive responses that may vary depending on the amount and spatial dispersion of damage on the plant; however, of the two variables, damage dispersion has received much less attention. To address this gap, we studied wild cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) defensive responses to different herbivory amounts and degrees of dispersion among leaves using the specialist caterpillar Alabama argillacea (Erebidae). METHODS: Four herbivory treatments differing in the amount and spatial distribution were applied to 4-month-old plants: no herbivory (controls), low (t

Can alternative sugar sources buffer pollinators from nectar shortages?

Honeydew is abundant in many ecosystems and may provide an alternative food source (a buffer) for pollinators during periods of food shortage, but the impact of honeydew on pollination systems has received little attention to date. In New Zealand, kānuka trees (Myrtaceae: Kunzea ericoides (A. Rich) Joy Thompson) are often heavily infested by the endemic honeydew-producing scale insect Coelostomidia wairoensis (Maskell) (Hemiptera: Coelostomidiidae) and the period of high honeydew production can overlap with kānuka flowering. In this study, we quantified the sugar resources (honeydew and nectar

Urban Weeds: Supporters of Pollinator Biodiversity in Urban Landscapes.

Urbanization is widely recognized as a major driver of biodiversity loss; however, cities can also provide important refuges for pollinators when diverse and continuous floral resources are available. This study assessed the diversity of spontaneous insect-pollinated flora and its associated pollinator communities across five major urban habitat types (grasslands, road verges, artificial surfaces, wooded areas, and wetlands) in the Mediterranean cities of Pisa, Livorno, and Lucca (central Italy). During a three-year field survey, spontaneous flowering plant species were systematically recorded
