Hearts and flowers: Bryophyllum poisoning of cattle.

Findings from natural cases and experiments with cattle emphasise that flowering plants are the most important form of Bryophyllum (Kalanchoe) spp in poisonings in Australia. The main life-threatening lesion is myocardial. The effects on the alimentary tract are less important than was believed previously. B. tubiflorum, B. daigremontianum x B. tubiflorum, B. pinnatum and B. proliferum caused 41 recorded poisoning incidents affecting 379 cattle in Queensland between 1960 and 1984. Poisoning occurred between May and October--the flowering season of these plants. Experimental B. tubiflorum poiso

Hepatoencephalopathy syndrome due to Cassia occidentalis (Leguminosae, Caesalpinioideae) seed ingestion in horses.

Cassia occidentalis is a bush from the Leguminosae family, subfamily Caesalpinoideae, and is a toxic plant of veterinary interest due to the occasional contamination of animal rations. This report describes the clinical and histopathological findings of an outbreak of C. occidentalis poisoning in horses. Twenty mares were poisoned after consuming ground corn contaminated with 8% of C. occidentalis seeds. Of the 20 animals affected, 12 died: 8 mares were found dead, 2 died 6 h after the onset of clinical signs compatible with hepatic encephalopathy and the 2 other animals were subjected to euth

Multiple organ failure leading to death after ingestion of Caltha palustris: A case report.

RATIONALE: Studies have previously reported misidentifying Caltha palustris (C. palustris) as Ligularia fischeri and its subsequent ingestion leading to abdominal pain and gastrointestinal symptoms, which are alleviated immediately. Bradycardia and hypotension may persist for several days, and an infusion of dopamine can restore a healthy state without complications. We report a case of C. palustris poisoning with protein-losing enteropathy that has not been reported previously. The patient died of multiple organ failure, and exhibited more severe clinical deterioration than previous cases due

An epidemiological study of poisoning cases reported to the National Poisons Information Centre, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

A retrospective analysis of poisoning calls received by the National Poisons Information Centre showed a total of 2719 calls over a period of three years (April 1999-March 2002). The queries were made on poisoning management (92%) and information (8%) about various products and functioning of the centre. The data were analysed with respect to age, sex, mode and type of poisoning. The agents belonged to various groups: household products, agricultural pesticides, industrial chemicals, drugs, plants, animal bites and stings, miscellaneous and unknown groups respectively. The age ranged from less

Clinical Profile and Management of Poisoning with Suicide Tree: An Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: The clinical features, management, and the associations of dosage in poisoning with the cardiotoxic plant Cerbera odollam (suicide tree), responsible for more than half of plant poisoning deaths in the South Indian State of Kerala alone, have not been evaluated. There are only few studies on its clinical features and none on the usage of cardiac pacing in its management, given its rarity in the Western world. We depend on data for similar toxins to form our management protocols. AIMS: Our aim was to describe the clinical features of C. odollam poisoning, dosage, and its relation

Poisoning from Alocasia × amazonica Roots: A Case Report.

All parts of Alocasia × amazonica (A. amazonica, Araceae) pose a toxicological risk due to oxalate production. Ingestion of the plant extract may cause multi-organ damage and fatal outcomes. Given the rarity of poisoning cases, its toxicological profile and systemic effects remain insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to investigate and report an appropriate approach to managing a patient intoxicated with A. amazonica (Araceae). A case of intentional self-poisoning with A. amazonica is presented. The patient, a 63-year-old woman, ingested approximately 200-300 mL of liquid prepared fr

[Toxic contact dermatitis from poison ivy in a private garden in Germany].

A couple suffered for 5 years from recurrent eruptions with vesicles and bullae after contact with an unknown "climbing weed" in their private garden in Germany. After this plant was identified as poison ivy and eradicated, their skin problems were solved. This is the first report of poison ivy in this setting. Urushiols in poison ivy are not only strong allergens but also potent irritants. Negative patch tests in the husband suggest that the bullous dermatitis was a toxic reaction.

Botanical Briefs: Contact Dermatitis Induced by Western Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron rydbergii).

"Leaves of three, leave it be" serves as an apt caution for avoiding poison ivy (Toxicodendron species) and its dermatitis-inducing sap. Toxicodendron contact dermatitis (TCD) poses a notable burden to the American health care system by accounting for half a million reported cases of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) annually. Identifying and avoiding physical contact with the western poison ivy (Toxicodendron rydbergii) plant prevails as the chief method of preventing TCD. This article discusses common features of T rydbergii as well as clinical manifestations and treatment options following

Habitat Suitability and Establishment Limitations of a Problematic Liana.

The US native liana, poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans), responsible for contact dermatitis in humans, is a competitive weed with great potential for expansion in disturbed habitats. To facilitate a better understanding of this threat, we sought to evaluate habitat suitability, population demography, and biotic interactions of poison ivy, using a series of complementary field studies in the two habitats where it most commonly occurs-forest interiors and edges. Of the 2500 seeds planted across both habitats, poison ivy initially colonized forest interiors (32% emergence) at a higher rate than

[Fatal poisoning by Atractylis gummifera L.: a case report].

We report the case of a 13-year-old child admitted to the ICU because of Atractylis gummifera poisoning. This plant is poisonous, with a liver tropism and is a public health problem in the pediatric population. Beyond this observation, we review this intoxication, whose diagnosis is clinical, treatment is symptomatic and prevention is crucial.

Acute toxic kidney injury.

Substances toxic to the kidney are legion in the modern world. The sheer number and variety, their mutual interactions and, metabolism within the body are a challenge to research. Moreover, the kidney is especially prone to injury owing to its physiology. Acute kidney injury (AKI) induced by poisonous or primarily nephrotoxic substances, may be community acquired with ingestion or inhalation or nosocomial. Many nephrotoxic plants, animal poisons, medications, chemicals and illicit drugs can induce AKI by varying pathophysiological pathways. Moreover, the epidemiology of toxic AKI varies depend

[Datura stramonium poisoning--a new problem in children and young people's toxicomania in Poland].

The aim of the study was to show the growing problem of poisoning with easily accessible shrub Datura stramonium among children and young people. 21 children with the symptoms of poisoning with this plant were treated in The Silesian Centre for Children's Diseases in Zabrze in the years 1999-2001. The majority of patients were boys (18 cases) at the age between 15-17 years (15). These were intentional consumptions except for one case of a 3-year-old boy. Cumulative poisoning was also present. The patients came mainly from full families with 2 children where either both parents were unemployed

Severe Neurotoxicity due to Atropa belladonna Poisoning: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Atropa belladonna (A. belladonna), commonly known as deadly nightshade, is a poisonous plant belonging to the Solanaceae family. The toxic effects of A. belladonna are attributable to its alkaloid content, which possesses potent anticholinergic properties. These alkaloids are responsible for the plant's toxicity and can cause a range of adverse effects in humans and animals upon ingestion or contact. In this report, we describe two atypical cases of A. belladonna poisoning resulting from accidental ingestion of the plant's raw leaves, which were referred to the emergency room of a poisoning ce

Poisoning in children: Indian scenario.

The retrospective data on childhood poisoning from eight regional hospitals in India has been reviewed. The demographic features and types of poisonings encountered have been compared. The analysis of the data indicated that pediatric poisonings constituted 0.23-3.3% of the total poisoning. The mortality ranged from 0.64-11.6% with highest being from Shimla. Accidental poisoning was common involving 50-90% of children below 5 years of age and males outnumbered the females. Suicidal poisoning was seen after 13 years of age and was due to drugs and household chemicals. One of the hospitals in De

Acute effects of carbofuran in workers of two pesticide plants.

This paper investigates the acute effects of carbofuran in workers of two pesticide-formulating plants. Mean airborne carbofuran concentrations ranged from 0.025 to 1.115 mg/m3 in plant A and from 0.018 to 0.067 mg/m3 in plant B, respectively. In workers of plant A the post-shift blood cholinesterase activity was significantly reduced, compared to pre-shift values. No difference in blood cholinesterase activity was found between pre- and post-shift values in workers of plant B. During the investigation, 25 cases of acute carbofuran poisoning were diagnosed by their clinical picture and depress

Contact Dermatitis From Exposure to Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia): A Deviation From the Saying "Leaves of Three, Let It Be".

Phytodermatitis is often caused by contact with certain plants and may be recognized by the common saying, "leaves of three, let it be".  However, lesser-known plants, such as Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), can also cause significant contact dermatitis (CD). A 54-year-old female physician with a history of poison ivy allergy presented with a pruritic, erythematous, blistering rash with linear streaks on her face, neck, and arms following exposure to Virginia creeper plants in her backyard. Symptoms began 48 hours post-exposure, exhibiting linear streaks and scattered plaques s

Alocasia odora poisoning due to calcium oxalate needle crystals in Japan.

Objective: To elucidate the actual circumstances of damage caused by Japanese Alocasia (A) odora. Materials and Methods: We investigated cases in Japan from our own hospital in the eastern part of Shizuoka Prefecture as well as published reports. Results: A. dorais found in western Japan, and plants of the Alocasia genus are cultivated often. A. odora is frequently associated with food poisoning because its aboveground parts resemble those of Satoimo (Colocasia esculenta). Moreover, A. odora contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which cause poisoning symptoms, such as oral pain, nausea,

Acute Intoxication With Poison Hemlock (Conium maculatum).

Poison hemlock (Conium maculatum) is regarded as one of the most poisonous plants worldwide, and it can easily be misidentified as edible species as celery, parsnip (for their leaves), or carrots (for their roots). Toxicity comes from piperidine alkaloids, which mimic nicotine effect on the autonomous nervous system giving a clinical picture of nicotinic syndrome with an initial excitatory phase and secondary inhibitory one. In Portugal, this plant is used as an ancient technique for river fishing. Death comes from respiratory arrest and hemodynamic collapse; rapid diagnosis and medical suppor

Cerbera odollam toxicity: A review.

Cerbera odollam is a plant species of the Apocynaceae family. It is often dubbed the 'suicide tree' due to its strong cardiotoxic effects, which make it a suitable means to attempt suicide. The plant grows in wet areas in South India, Madagascar, and Southeast Asia; and its common names include Pong-Pong and Othalanga. The poison rich part of the plant is the kernel which is present at the core of its fruit. The bioactive toxin in the plant is cerberin, which is a cardiac glycoside of the cardenolide class. Cerberin has a mechanism of action similar to digoxin; hence, Cerbera odollam toxicity
