Pinball wizard: the case of a pinball machine addict.

This is a description of a young man who is addicted to playing pinball machines. The subject's playing history and playing pathology are outlined using an adapted version of the DSM-III-R criteria for pathological gambling. Such an adaptation of these criteria is proposed as beneficial in monitoring and recording objective measures of all gaming-machine addictions.

Learning Landscapes, caregivers, and young children: Results from a multiple methods study.

Learning Landscapes (LLs) are family-friendly structures that transform community spaces (e.g., parks and bus stops) into engaging activities. The community structures are designed to encourage children to explore their environment while fostering developmentally supportive interactions (DSI) and learning opportunities between caregivers and children, including children with disabilities. Playful learning provided through LLs could result in developmental gains for children from lower-income backgrounds. The purpose of this multiple methods study, conducted in the US, was to examine 10 caregiv

Warning Labels and High-Powered Magnet Exposures.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: High-powered magnets are among the most dangerous childhood foreign bodies. Consumer advocates and physicians have called for these products to be effectively banned, but manufacturers assert warning labels would sufficiently mitigate risk. METHODS: Subjects from Injuries, Morbidity, and Parental Attitudes Concerning Tiny High-powered Magnets (IMPACT of Magnets), a retrospective, multicenter study of children with high-powered magnet exposures (ie, ingestion or bodily insertion), were contacted. Consenting participants responded to a standardized questionnaire regar

Expansile Superabsorbent Polymer Ball Foreign Body in the Ear.

BACKGROUND: Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) are materials that can absorb large quantities of water. Small spherical SAPs are commonly marketed as toys for children. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 4-year-old female who presented to a pediatric emergency department with a small, marble-sized SAP that was placed in her ear by herself during the course of play at daycare. On examination, the object was translucent and difficult to visualize. After multiple attempts at removal, the object was partially removed using an ear curette. The patient sustained a small tympanic membrane perforation.

Modifying alcohol expectancies of Hispanic children: examining the effects of expectancy-targeted, developmentally congruous prevention videos.

OBJECTIVE: Children's expectations about the effects of alcohol consumption are known to predict the amount of alcohol they consume as adults. Previous research has used videotaped interventions to modify children's alcohol expectancies and found that puppet actors had the expected effect of decreasing children's positive alcohol expectancies, whereas adult actors did not. The current study sought to enhance the methods and outcomes of previous research by developing brief prevention videos that focus on pre-selected negative and sedating alcohol expectancies and include youth actors and age-r

How dangerous a toy can be? The magnetic effect.

During the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the number of magnetic toys available for children. Two or more magnets separate from each other along the gastrointestinal course can attract each other across bowel walls, resulting in pressure necrosis, bowel perforations and fistulas formation. This has led to an increasing number of case reports describing serious complications from ingesting more than one magnet. We report the ingestion of a large number of magnets from one toy (>60 pieces). Our patient presented with generalised peritonitis and shock. During emergency lapa

Midfoot injury in children related to mini scooters.

The remarkable rise in popularity of mini scooters has been accompanied by an increase in the number of foot and ankle injuries. We have observed unique pediatric foot injuries related to the use of mini scooters. An association may be present linking the design of the mini scooter and the riding practices of children. We report on two unique midfoot injuries in children occurring with mini scooter use and discuss how these foot injuries may be related to scooter design and children's riding practices. Safety guidelines aimed at the prevention of foot and ankle injuries while riding mini scoot

Fatal asphyxiations in children involving drawstrings on clothing.

Injuries account for more deaths and hospital admissions among children and adolescents than all diseases combined. The authors report two deaths by asphyxiation that resulted from drawstrings on the children's clothing becoming entangled on slides. Although such incidents are not common, they are preventable. The authors urge physicians to counsel parents and guardians to remove drawstrings from children's clothing, and they call upon the government and the clothing industry to work toward improving the safety standards for the design, manufacture and importation of children's clothing and ba

[Eye injuries in 'paintball'; a modern 'war injury'].

Paintball shooting is played with increasing frequency in the Netherlands. A bullet, filled with paint, shot at 60 m/sec can cause serious damage to the eye. All five patients seen in two years showed a hyphaema. Four out of five patients showed damage of the posterior pole, including vitreous haemorrhage, choroidal rupture, retinal detachment, and sub- or intraretinal haemorrhage. Three out of five patients incurred permanent visual loss, varying from 3/60 to 25/100. Adequate instruction of the participants in the game and proper use of the eye protector will be of help in preventing eye inju

Reflex seizures induced by calculation, card or board games, and spatial tasks: a review of 25 patients and delineation of the epileptic syndrome.

Nine patients had reflex activation of seizures by calculation, card and board games, or spatial tasks. The common denominator for these and the 16 others reported in the literature appears to be activity related to function of the parietal lobe. The clinical and EEG findings in all 25 patients support the diagnosis of primary generalized epilepsy. Seizures usually start during adolescence and consist of myoclonus, absences, and generalized convulsions. Specific inquiry about reflex activation should be carried out in patients with generalized epilepsy since this is rarely provided spontaneous
